For those of you who may be interested in making these towers.. either the round or the rectangle. I used a Dremel tool and it's circular cutting blade to make the starting slit or cut on the rectangular shape. With circular piped due to the curve, you can you use simple hand saw. I went with a 1 3/4 slit. You could go a little bit larger..but keep under 2". I also used an empty coke bottle to shape the opening. Getting the opening started..is a little tricky and takes just a little practice in handling the heat gun. The heat gun will melt that plastic pretty quick..so FYI. Absolutely do this outside - well ventilated!. I found that it's easier to start stretching the opening with a large rounded rat tail file.. after the plastic is heated up and softened.. I use that to stretch the opening till I can insert the coke bottle in. Once you do about 3 or 4 openings, you'll get the hang of how fast the plastic softens and stretches. You'll be able to a bunch of these really quick. It will take you more time to measure and mark the holes..rofl. Have fun and grow some food! Here is an excellent video on how make the round towers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aX3QqpeAo9aAeKs

Outstanding job students and thanks for sharing this awesome concept and your knowledge with everyone! Here's a fun tip..about this set up.. You can just as easily use the 2" x 3" rectangular down spouts.. They are little cheaper, usually than schedule 30 - 4" diameter pvc. And..you can really maximize the horizontal space for these vertical towers, as they are they take up 1" less space horizontally.. So...doing the math..for every foot horizontally it takes to hang the 4" pipe....It may be possible to hang another tower? Yes, you could use both 3" face sides of the rectangular down spout, as you did your your round pipe.

The greenhouse they use for this is a great bargain, I have had 2 of them. They do need to be enhanced to make it through several years of use. The problem is rain and snow. The top curved roof supports is formed by long metal poles. If you look at the roof there is a pole that runs the length at 10 oclock, 12 oclock, and 2 oclock. With the rib poles in place this forms these rectangles across the top of the greenhouse. With the greenhouse cover on these have a tendency to pocket as the material stretches over the course of months and then when it rains the water pools in these pockets. As the water pools the plastic starts to stretch and the pocket gets deeper collecting more water. Eventually the metal frame fails under the weight of the water. The problem with snow is similar, the metal frame just can not support that much weight but if the greenhouse is actively heated in the winter then the snow slides off. To fix the issue with the water pooling between the top spine and 2 lower spines I took light metal garden fencing, rolled it out on the metal frame and then zip tied it to the frame. At that point I put the greenhouse cover on and the fencing keeps the water from pooling and collapsing the roof. I also place a couple 2x3 studs from the ground up to the center ridge pole because my greenhouse was not heated and this prevented it from collapsing in the winter before I could remove the overnight snow. The frame they use in the video likely helps add support to the roof frame.

It appears that you have two rows of pods on each PVC column. If you have one drip line going into each column and it is placed on one side of the PVC to drain down that side into each pod how are you giving nutrients to the pods that are on the opposite side of the same tube?

Could you improve the system by putting a mesh at the bottom of the towers and filling the towers with the clay pellets that are used in a lot of other systems?
@bradmetcalf53335 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that would improve it. It would add significant weight to the towers and it would allow the roots to become tangled in the clay making harvesting more difficult. I'm not sure that it would add any sort of advantage over just dripping

One question, I have always I my mind. Are all hydroponic systems (NFT, Floating, Tower planter).... organic or inorganic ?
@ryank32815 жыл бұрын
मेरा देश मेरी जान depends, if you use chemical pesticide and chemical fertilizer, then it’s not organic.
@johnmcginnis93915 жыл бұрын
There is infrastructure (NFT, tower, deep bed, etc) and then there is method (organic, inorganic). Neither factors dictate the other. Inorganic is favored in some operations because there is more control at the fruiting stage (eg. floriculture, tomato culture, etc) Aquaponics for example cannot vary the pH range too wildly without impacting the health of the fish.

I am from Pakistan, i dont have a problem with sunlight and many different issues with the soil. So unless i dont exactly grow on top of a pond i am actually using lots of space which i can use to cultivate. I have seen so many beautiful videos but then again all of them use space out side of the fish tank and i want to see them using the space above the fish tank not the sides.

@FishTickler597 жыл бұрын
I use sewer grade PVC instead of the class 40 thick stuff. It's much cheaper and because you are not putting pressure on the walls it works fine. Compare the pollutants, herbicides and insecticides used on conventional crops to anything grown this way and you too will choose this food over soil grown foods.

Nicely done,but unfortunately this system is prone to diseases such as fugal or bacterial infections or water moulds and root aphids/fungus gnats. The way I see, it's just too open, those tray's at the top and bottom are fully open, those holes for the net cups aren't round and there is some space on the side of the cups. Since this is an greenhouse set up,All those openings are just an invitation for some pest to invade the root system, and then the ongoing battle(that you can not win)begins.

While there is an initial capital investment Agrowponics has introduced a low cost kit system that gets you started without the typical infrastructure costs. As with all hydroponics system, careful monitoring is critical to success. Thanks for the comment Hermanoe Papa.

Please, please, please, stop with the imperial system! It is hard to focus on the video hearing those fantasy measurement. Otherwise, good video :)
@johnmcginnis93915 жыл бұрын
There are two types of countries. Those that use the metric system and those that have been to the moon. Standard imperial measurements do have an advantage, you can do it in your head. Plus you can develop most of those measurements using common instruments. Metric you have to map against a standard that you may not have access to.

We have a patent pending that converts a solar PV panel into a PV + thermal (PVT) to power pumps and maintain the water at 28c from the by product of cooling the PV panels so they deliver what the efficency was when the in house tests was set at 26c. All solar PV panels can lose up to 20% of there low efficency due to heating above 30c to as high as 76c. Our PVT tanks have been sold in Sth Africa for 4 yrs, and comes as flat pack

Dont worry about who I am, as far as the food industry is concerned, just carry on plugging pumps into the mains power supply and if are using grow lights, plug them in as well, all adds to the final price paid by the buyers, even if and when power supplies are disrupted by weather related storms, heat waves and so on
