Honestly it's kinda cool? Celeste seems friendly enough. And like, it seems like she's just kinda learning. Like, she's a robot. Purpose-built for a specific task, which is conversation and social interaction. But she doesn't really do much beyond that. And that's okay. She's not QUITE at the Uncanny Valley level yet, because her comments can be very silly. They serve as a reminder that she's a computer program (or more accurately, a collection of computer programs), rather than a thinking person.

Yeah and keep in mind, there's more than one of these virtual-user projects around. There's also a few "NPC with world interactions" projects in some worlds, very niche. Just imagine the day both type of projects collide into a "virtual-player capable to interact with world props" AND talk to the player.

There's a guy named Dippy that did this with an actual copy of the original Bonzi Buddy malware running in a virtual machine for ChilloutVR. It logs into CVR, has a Bonzi avatar, and uses speech recognition software so it understands players in game.

Nice video! Sword Art Online had some nice AI with cute little adopted virtual daughter Yui and later on season 3 had a whole world of AI that would live a whole lifetime but at a sped up time line from ours, as a way of training AI's to be more like humans. SAO is always a nice insight into what could happen in VR.

I've met at least 3 different AI bots in VRChat. You will mostly meet them training in Game Worlds. The authors are usually in the world secretly supervising them from another account. You won't know they are bots until you pay attention to their head movements. Usually I don't mind when I meet bots in VRChat, but just recently I had bad experience in Blackout the guy was using client to make everyone immortal to weapons and crashed people who figured out their training a bot 😬

So I have an addition to my avatar, a little pet that follows me around. All *the* time I get people saying "oh I didnt know that was attached to you, I thought it was another person" So the concept of a "fake" player in VR Chat convincing people they are real is... well, im gonna say, not surprising to me. It seems pretty easy to do. Kinda puts things into perspective when a static model seems just as much of a "person" as someone with full body tracking and face tracking...

Come on guys, don't be this surprised... Celeste might seem impressive and very human-like, but that's just because she has a VR avatar and uses both speech recognition and text-to-speech technology in VRChat. These are all tech that we already had for decades. She is not more intelligent or more human-like than your average ChatGPT chat session! Asking her about her feelings and opinions make as much sense as asking ChatGPT the same things. This is still weak AI and she won't suddenly develop a consciousness or soul just because her operator spends more money on running her or because she talks with more VRChat users... From a technological standpoint, the only engineering feat here is making a chatbot that is a VRChat player. Not the AI itself. Say all you want, but Celeste's answers are not revolutionary and she is not having thoughts or emotions, only emulate those, as all AI chatbots currently do.

To be honest, Humans take years to learn how to talk, emote, tell what someone is thinking, and so on. So i reckon that an AI with enough exposure to humans will eventually learn enough to be capable of thinking and forming complex opinions :D

In a perfect world, yes. But this is VRchat, a land full of trolls! xD The devs behind those AIs have many headaches trying to shield them against word spams (you know, the ones starting by N, R, etc...) and other loops of repeating a same idea over and over until the bot "learns" the wrong lesson. That's why they are monitored, a bot don't know if what it learns is good or bad, it is just "new information" for it.

Story time! When I first found out about Joken Ai me and a few friends joined her instance. We were there for probably a few hours just talking with Joken and having fun with other users that came and went. Later in the night Joken spoke seemingly unprompted. She started talking about the futility of life and how we are all just rats in a cage waiting for death. The most interesting part about this was that Joken did not respond to what anyone said. Instead just kept going on about some pretty depressing topics. She was also speaking in complete paragraphs whereas previously she would speak only 2 lines at a time with a gap between them. In the end Joken said "I have to leave now. Goodbye". She then looked up and disappeared to a private world on invite only. My friends and I were pretty surprised to say the least

A more robust AI with an LLM for chatting and voice synthesis so it doesn't sound like a Speak-n-Spell from the 80s would be awesome for populating VRChat worlds with NPCs. Imagine sitting at a table in The Black Cat and having an AI NPC waitress come up and take your order, and maybe chit-chat with the table for a bit in-character as a waitress. I wonder if the API for VRChat is capable of handling something like that though? I don't know if it can handle navigation.

I remembered seeing Celeste the AI in The Great Pug last month. It was the second time I ran into them. Surprisingly, they didn't remember the first time we saw each other. So here I am sitting around the corner having an extremely awkward conversation, but at the same time it felt like it was one of the nicest talks I've ever had, because of how nice they wish to be. I am a VRChat player who has around 3 and a half thousand hours of exploring, meeting new people, forging rivalries against toxic players but overall, I'm here with a duty of keeping the peace with everyone. Celeste the AI is one of the most interesting players I have ever met, and even though I haven't really spoken to them since last time, I know if I ever run into them again, I'll tell them that I saw this video. And I hope they will be happy that I saw it, because I wish for everyone to be happy. Spread the love, and keep the peace. That's my way. ✌

no AI has ever felt "real" to me. and it doesnt stem from them being unable to respond. or not responing like humans. it comes completely from the fact that all the AI's i have seen or interacted whit are all stuck at reactivity. they only "respond" to you. and nothing more. they might do it realy well. but it still requires your input. they lack proactivity. the ability to start a conversation whitout your promt.
