We live in a funny timeline where Pewdiepie kinda was part of Vtubing history by spreading Kizuna Ai influence, my first interaction with Vtuber was a Felix video no less. The most major one that actually make me go and watch a Vtuber though are a Hitomi Chris video, Nobuhime clips and 8Bitdrummer covers of Fubuki meme vids.
