spoilers for mouthwashing + how fish is made dlc / / / / / the way anya acts around jimmy is something that people often overlook, but as someone who has faced sexual abuse, it was glaringly obvious at a snap as to everything related to anya. mouthwashing as a game, to me, speaks about how community keeps up abuse - especially in environments that do not care for their workers. toxic environments leading into mentalities that look the other way. at the end of it all, none of the men cared to stick up for anya against jimmy. it was strikingly obvious how much of a danger the man was, yet not even until it was too late that anyone did anything. and even then, jimmy killed everyone. daisuke was chill/fine with his boss considering he was a new intern. didn't consider to speak up. nor did swansea, even when he and anya talked privately. as much as i'd like to assume he would have had saved her, honestly, the old man didn't think to tell jimmy to back off back then in the birthday party. he's only said that 'oh, i *have* heard of what she said. she was the one speaking to me about everything else, not the other way around'. and especially, especially not curly. he's the worst of them all, enabling everything that jimmy said. how he always has his 'friend's' back. not even caring to speak out against him, calling him out. along with this, with pony express being the very last manned frieghter ship from curly's letter, and the fact that anyone doesn't have anywhere else to go... anya has said that she didn't have any savings. she failed nurse school and tried multiple times to get in, so she went on to pony express's nursing program. even *with* everything else in mind, would she even have a support system to fall back on? what of suing jimmy and bringing him to court? it's heavily implied within the how fish is made dlc that it centers on curly's thoughts pre-crash. about how he's had to speak of other people's words in his mouth. he's resigned to his job, that it'll only be that day, that both jimmy and curly can both get through these things. one day at a time. then it was two, then three. that he's tired. no one cared for anya. not in curly's point of view and not in jimmy's. any inaction is still action. even then, he let him get into the cockpit, stood by. all because jimmy didn't want to face any consequences for sa'ing anya. *the only woman on the ship.* this also calls into question as to how and why jimmy knew how to spike the mocktail. how does he know that giving the drink would incapacitate someone? has he already assaulted/raped other women before? how much has curly would have possibly excused these behaviors previously, just because he's his friend? excused his toxic, abusive behavior, even towards him. nowhere is it ever seen though, that jimmy feels bad about raping anya. jimmy sexually harasses her (the getting attracted to horses comment) in the medical room, he constantly verbally abuses her. gets under her skin, talks down of her position as a nurse. shouts at her for not wanting to fucking shove pills down curly's throat; the insuation that she does not want to force something down into her captain's throat because of the noise being parallel to her being... assaulted. jimmy has 'guilt' scenes for everyone else. not her. the only thing that's even 'left' of her is polle, considering both her and the horse have the same text. her words get distorted through jimmy's lines - our worst moments don't make us monsters. he excuses himself. the comment about him being all aroused at horses, the way he views her as nothing more than an object and not a person. her 'pregnancy' is not even shown by jimmy's perspective because he ignores it completely. even in game, she is seen at her worst moment. she's forced to stay around with an abuser, and the entire rest of the men around the tulpar silently bolster up a community that lets this happen. daisuke, swansea, & curly. they stood by and never once confronted him. ever.

Jimmy sabotaged the ship to vent his anger at Curly, showing that even Curly, despite his high rank, can make mistakes. After Curly was disfigured, Jimmy falsely blamed him, feeding his own ego. Driven by an inferiority complex and mental illness, Jimmy misinterpreted Curly’s dissatisfaction with his job, seeing him as arrogant and greedy. What makes Jimmy despicable is his lack of empathy, especially when he assaulted Anya. It's infuriating that someone so rotten faced no consequences. I felt Curly deserved better, and Jimmy's actions left me wishing he had suffered more.

Man oh man, I'm obsessed with this game, and your videos are always a good time. It was really cool to watch you play it! ...I'm gonna go on a lil rant now! 😅 [SPOILERS AHEAD] . . . . "Why are you still so concerned with *him*?" That Polle quote took me way too long to figure out - I think I saw a comment on another video that helped, tbh. He's calling Jimmy out: even though he essentially caused the deaths of the whole crew, Jimmy only ever apologises or expresses any remorse for what he did to Curly (his enabler bff - Curly didn't deserve his fate but he's far from innocent tbf). Even worse? Jimmy has all these elaborate guilt/justification sequences about everyone *except for Anya*. The fetus takes her place in his head. He doesn't give a damn about her, doesn't comment on her death, doesn't even see what he did to her as an issue - his only regret is that there were consequences to his actions, undeniable physical evidence of his assault of her that would send him to jail if he ever set foot back on Earth. So, Polle's saying "If you're *actually* sorry, why are we still just talking about this guy?" It was also kinda cool how the Polle in Jim's head interrupted him when he was trying to twist Anya's words to defend himself. He had no right to do that. Btw, another thing: Curly might not even survive cryosleep bc he HAS NO SKIN to protect his internals!! ...Well, it's not like cryosleep is a thing irl but if it was, surely that would be a concern! Basically, Jimmy's just using Curly even at the end: to feel all heroic for "saving" his friend, and to take the fall for what happened if he's ever found, because the captain would be held responsible by default and in his state Curly wouldn't be able to defend himself. (He likely won't be found though, as Pony Express was one of the last manned freighter companies and they just went under. So.) Oh, and when Jimmy was giving Curly his meds the 2nd time & Curly was screaming? Jimmy totally beat up that defenseless, disabled man. So there's that too. tl;dr: JIMMY SUCKS! 😃 (I mean, the cutthroat capitalist society that molded Jimmy into who he is and the corporation that got them all into that situation in the first place are definitely also to blame but JIMMY SUCKS!) (Edit: got self-conscious & dialed myself back a bit shdfhg.)

really incredible and profound game, excited you played it! also spoilers ahead . . . . I'm not sure if you picked up on it but Jimmy actually forced himself on Anya. It's implied when Anya asks Curly why the sleeping quarters don't come with locks and Curly naively responded "for safety". It was so heartbreaking how innocent Daisuke was, he didn't doubt Swansea for a moment and he was still trying to follow his orders but Jimmy pressed him into going into the vents which costed him his life. Also not sure if you picked up that Swansea was actually saving the cryo-pod for Daisuke, not himself, because he actually cared a lot about him and knew he didn't deserve to be in this mess.

Idk if u caught on or not but it’s hinted that Anya didn’t get pregnant by choice, that’s why she asked Curly about the lack of locks in the sleeping quarters :( The board game pieces also represent each of the different characters, and the layout of the board periodically changes to represent the current situation

@Blackrose128 Ofc!! I also think that’s why Anya acts so much differently in Curly’s POVs- not because she’s flirting with the captain but because she’s not around her abuser. It could also be because we’re getting most of the story from Jimbo’s pov, and since he believes she’s just a weak, incapable emotional woman, she comes across that way for most of the story. This game has so, so much to unpack, so I absolutely don’t blame you for being a little overwhelmed

He certainly wouldn't pass up the chance to belittle her more, though with how much he runs away from horrible horse-based creatures and the theme of avoiding responsibility, I don't think he's scared of Anya in a way that she'd turn into a cartoon horse in his twisted mindscape. It's like she's barely a person to him. Somebody not even worth guilt-tripping himself over unlike Daisuke.

There's a LOT to unpack in this game, definitely some things that you notice when you've watched six or seven playthroughs (like I have 😅) but yeah, it's some pretty heavy and deep stuff. I'm glad you played it and enjoyed it even despite the unsettling bits!
