Arguably the best part of the movie. I love how they included the topic of the AIDS epidemic and love John’s cameo here

@ur local monkey If I’m correct, one of the people shown in this clip has aids ( I believe they was hugo’s boyfriend/friend if I’m right) and I think they died at some point, they also mention Freddy Mercury, who died from aids.

@ur local monkey Freddie Mercury and died of AIDS, and yeah, the cameraman has it (it might also be the reason her friend is in the wheelchair). The lyrics also reference it-"every week was a wake" (as in a "wake" not "awake", which is what I thought it was a first), and "so naive to believe that a painted face can't grieve." Some of the other lyrics, too, I believe

this was the moment the movie went from good to GREAT. I can't believe how moving this was. I had to pause the movie so i could collect myself at the end of it, i was that touched. this movie is one big love letter to the kings and queens who came before us, who let a trans man like me be able to live openly.

I was so upset when I realized they were replacing Legend of Loco Chanelle but by the end I was in tears. The perfect replacement. I loved the fun and whimsical story of drag queen murder but this made the Warrior Queen so much more badass while tapping into a realistic backstory of the real fight. I think it also provides a great setup for Over the Top that really sets the tone for the power of drag and performance art as a revolutionary show of protest. Also, I met John McCrea after the West End show when he was still Jamie and seeing him take up the mantle of Loco Chanelle this way just made it seem so much more powerful, knowing that even within the same story we see younger generations being inspired to join the fight.

I think everyone who was a fan of the stage show balked at the idea of Loco Chanelle getting cut. I sure did. But if i had known what would replace it, i wouldn't have worried. It adds so much depth to hugo's character, and jeeeeesus christ did i cry a lot. you know in the back of your mind that a good 60% of the people in that tape didn't make it.

This song/video gave me all the It’s A Sin feels! I’m a massive Queen/Freddie fan so when I saw the date stop at 24th November 1991 I knew what was coming. I’ll admit, I cried my eyes out so much it ruined the rest of the film for me. I just cried all the way through it. So many people senselessly and needlessly died, and still are. It’s criminal. Holly Johnson did well singing such a touching song, but he knew, he lived it.

I will never not use subtitles and this is the perfect example of why. I mean, not just cause of my audio processing disorder but because of the double meaning of lyrics. I originally thought the line in this song was "Every weekend was awake" and didn't realize the words were actually "Every weekend was a wake" and gosh does that hit hard.

I know! I was so worried (but hopeful since the trailer seemed to use the stage script almost exactly). I did miss the songs that were cut, especially Ugly in This Ugly World and If I Met Myself Again but as much as I loved the original song, I was so glad they made this replacement. I can always watch Legend of Loco Chanelle but now I have this extra beauty to cry over.

Thank you for posting this! I was angry that "The Legend of Loco Chanelle (and the Blood Red Dress)", my favorite song from the stage musical, wasn't in this movie adaptation, but I could not have asked for a better replacement song. It's so beautifully heartbreaking and nostalgic, especially with showing the news headlines about Freddie Mercury and the documentary clips with Princess Diana. Having Hugo's character live through the AIDs epidemic while seeing his lover and his peers die from it really gives his character a more realistic and touching motivation to mentor Jamie. ❤️

One of my favorite parts of the movie. I felt so many emotions, so much joy and pride, but also so much sadness and pain, I can't even imagine what those before us felt, watching their friends and lovers die so young, living in a world that mostly didn't care about them. I have many respect for these warriors, this song captures it all perfectly and made the movie get even more depth. Every time I think about this scene I tear up, really powerful.

the first video shown is dated exactly three days after i was born. growing up at the tail end of the AIDS epidemic, not a part of it yet very aware of it, has been very sobering. an entire generation of LGBTQIA people just GONE. At the art institute museum in chicago, the famous sculpture "untitled: portrait of Ross in LA" sits in a corner of the modern art exhibit. every time i went, that pile of candy was just a little bit smaller. It makes you painfully viscerally aware that the artist's boyfriend started at a healthy weight, until he wasn't, and it shows how he declined after contracting AIDS. he died the year it was installed, 1991. the artist, felix gonzalez-torres, would also die of AIDS five years later. just couldn't stop thinking about them during this song.

Having performed a concert at Carnegie Hall around the history of Stonewall, I did get a lesson in at least the US history and culture. I saw the stage show before I saw this movie. And this was taken out of the stage version. I was in my early 20's during the burgeoning of AIDS making it's way across three continents. I lost several friends. And I have to say, watching this POWERFUL video, and when it came on, I was watching this movie alone at home...and burst into tears. If this had been in the stage version, I would have reacted the same way in front of all those people in the audience. This is one of the greatest ANTHEMS to that time EVER!! That a veteran drag queen helped Jamie to know the price paid so that he could freely be himself, and hopefully live to be and elder one to pass it all on to the next generation. This was a brilliant scene. Truly.

This made me cry. Especially when Pritti tells Jamie that they were fighting for future generations, and that is him. I'm a teacher in a state where they're introducing new anti-LGBTQ legislation. This really drove home how much harder I need to fight for my students. I've been feeling so overwhelmed this school year (first year teaching full time, new job, new state, new curriculum, crazy year to teach everywhere) and it's easy to just keep putting off getting involved in activism while I get my feet under me, but as it so perfectly shows here, many people haven't had the option to choose what their cause is or when to get involved when their lives are on the line.

I've had the pleasure of seeing ETAJ three times including the West End production and I can honestly say 'This Was Me' is a masterpiece of musical talent and the pinnacle song within the film ('originally 'He's My Boy' was pinnacle in the theatre production). The lyrics are amazing, sung with heart and meaning by the brilliant Holly Johnson. John MacRae is always amazing (see Cruella for verification) and his portrayal of a young Loco combined with the poignant lyrics hits home perfectly and highlights LGBTQ+ life in the 80s/90s along with the devastation and loss caused by the AIDs pandemic. Hopefully the original song ('The Legend of Loco Chanel (and the Blood Red Dress)' ) will be replaced with 'This Was Me' when the production returns to the West End after its World tour (fingers crossed).

Ok this is gonna sound a bit odd but bare with, I have a theory that this is the same origin from the stage version too, the guy with the camera is John, but Loco makes up this big wild backstory, partly to protect people like Jamie from the truth but mainly to protect Hugo from the truth and having to face losing a loved one. He creates this big fantastical story about how John betrayed him but actually it was John's body that betrayed them both, and that's why John left Loco's life. But by telling himself this larger than life murder narrative he feels more in control and it's like none of that ever happened

The thing that hit me the hardest about this for me was that as a young queer, I know so little about the people who came before me. Our history doesn’t get taught in school, we have to discover it for ourselves, through stories and bits and pieces from media like this. The first time I ever heard about section 28 was in passing when my mum was talking to some of her gay friends from art school. I only found out a couple of weeks ago that someone who was close enough to her to help her figure out a pivotal thing about her own art died of aids in the 90s. It’s so hard to put words to how immeasurably sad it is that I will never get to meet many older queer people or drag queens because of the damage section 28 and AIDS did to our culture. I’m mourning people who died before I was even born.

John (the camera man) in the show is shown as a bit of a pimp who was shot by Loco - however you find out this isn’t true at the end of the scene. But you later find out that Hugo loved John and that he probably left in more of a heartbreaking way. So I put two and two together and assume that the new song would have been about aids and Hugo’s boyfriend dying. And is as correct - I like how in the show it is hinted but in the show it’s actually shown.

Yes definitely, there are many hints to it in the show itself too.

Amazing there’s only 5 years between max and john. Showbiz is a cruel mistress. Would loved to have seen john in the movie as jamie he has so much depth ❤️

I was so scared when I found out that they were replacing The Legend and, honestly, originally hated the song. But I haven't been able to get it out of my head lately and now I realise that it really is the perfect replacement

Let me tell ya how it used to go Freddie playing on the radio The Iron Lady couldn't stop the show We felt like we could fly Poisoned banter and a barbed remark Bette Davis doing Joan of Arc Dirty glamour dancing in the dark On days that wouldn't die When we felt like we could fly It was real love Look around and feel love Tearing up the floor Something we loved more More than life This was me We were children in the night Every star burned twice as bright We were tough and we could fight We held the line This was me Every sorrow had a song Every lost boy could belong We were young and never wrong And I was divine This was me This was me Every Friday we'd emerge reborn Keep on dancing till we saw the dawn Making history and breaking laws Oh God, how good that feels We were heroes in our heels This was me We were children in the night Every star burned twice as bright We were tough and we could fight We held the line This was me So adored and born again Just a smoking ten for ten I was beautiful back then Yes, I was divine Let me take you round the bars I knew The stars I knew The padded bras I knew The cobbled alleyways, the ways I knew The maze I knew The waifs and strays I knew I started singing to the way back when The wishing I could live it all again Now I pass it onto you We were dreamers, only just begun We were sinners playing in the sun Kept on partying till '91 Until that fateful day We were peacocks in exotic herds Wouldn't listen to the warning words That's the problem with such pretty birds They always fly away Even Freddie couldn't stay This was me Were we foolish to believe? That a painted face can't grieve We were hopelessly naive Just out of time This was me Every heart is made to break Sometimes love's a big mistake Every weekend was awake But were we divine?
