The German sawback bayonet was the subject of intense propaganda and fear for both sides in World War I. Entente Press vilified Germany for its "barbaric" design (while ignoring similar weapons in its own armies) and German soldiers deliberately lost them after hearing what might happen if they were captured with them.

Remarque mentions these saw blade bayonets in „all quiet on the western front“ and how more experienced soldiers saw to it that recruits fitted with them would exchange them asap since the damage and pain they dealt to their victims was so gruesome that those caught wielding them by the entente forces were brutally killed. (He also describes how the preferred weapon for close combat were actually shovels with sharpened blades and hand grenades - grenades to stir up the trench and shovels to finish off the survivors. Apparently, a shovel was both easier to wield and could literally split a man in half from the neck down to the stomach. Really, quite terrifying descriptions of violence in that book)
@whensomethingcriesagain
@whensomethingcriesagain 2 ай бұрын
Not quite, he specifically talks about how the enemy hated the sight of the serrated bayonets and would brutally punish anyone they captured with one, but he doesn't ever suggest that the serrated ones leave more severe wounds. Indeed he argued the opposite, that the serrations just make the problem of bayonets getting jammed in an enemy worse.

not to disrespect the guy or anything but the part about cutting people in half is either some mistranslation, bad wording or he saw something wrong (maybe due to stress, adrenaline etc). a shovel like that weighs 0,730 kg while a 2 handed medieval war axe (1-3kg) cannot do such a cut (stops around the ribcage). i'd quess it's bad translation or he thought he saw that maybe when someone struk down with a shovel and cut trough the outside of a soldiers body

That's not the issue the serrations in theory would make a hole that was harder to sew up and would cause more bleeding it was it's kind of an unspoken rule among soldiers to use regular bayonets because it would put you out of the fight the same regardless but you had a higher chance of actually surviving if a medic gets to you in time while also possibly healing quicker with less scarring Also it's just the better choice anyway because it's less likely to get stuck and then get you killed

@starhammer5247 actually the serrated bayonet was a really hated tool during the war. Because usually they were charging for the stomach and it was more probable for the bayonet to get stuck in the organs while at the same time parts of the blade breaking of, which caused immeasurable pain and a slow death. Remarque even writes that when new recruits came to the front lines the veterans were quick to give them standard bayonets because often when entente troops caught Germans with serrated bayonets they would torture them (gouge their eyes out and fill them with sawdust) as a punishment for using that blade

Sttoooop spreading this shit. Thats not how it works. Just because a cut is a weird shape doesnt make it impossible to stitch up and thats irrelevant for a war anyways, you dont stop bleeding with stitching, you stitch to minimize scarring and aid in recovery. If the dude was stabbed he's still out of the fight even if he lives, and you dont stab someone once, you stab someone repeatedly. The 'needle bayonet', triangular bayonets, and all other forms of non-bladed bayonet are based on medieval rondel daggers to be more rigid and get through mail, thick clothing, etc easily. The screwdriver shape of russian bayonets is to increase structure and durability.

I got the full one: "During the day we loaf about and make war on the rats. Ammunition and hand-grenades become more plentiful. We overhaul the bayonets--that is to say, the ones that have a saw on the blunt edge. If the fellows over there catch a man with one of those he's killed at sight. In the next sector some of our men were found whose noses were cut off and their eyes poked out with their own saw-bayonets. Their mouths and noses were stuffed with sawdust so that they suffocated. Some of the recruits have bayonets of this sort; we take them away and give them the ordinary kind. But the bayonet has practically lost its importance. It is usually the fashion now to charge with bombs and spades only. The sharpened spade is a more handy and many-sided weapon; not only can it be used for jabbing a man under the chin, but it is much better for striking with because of its greater weight; and if one hits between the neck and shoulder it easily cleaves as far down as the chest. The bayonet frequently jams on the thrust and then a man has to kick hard on the other fellow's belly to pull it out again; and in the interval he may easily get one himself. And what's more, the blade often gets broken off."

The thing with sawback bayonets though, is that they are much more likely to get stuck on an opponent's bone or cartilage than a clean double or single edged blade, and a triangular or round spike bayonet is the least likely to get stuck at all. And if your bayonet gets stuck without a round in the chamber or worst case with a completely empty firearm, then getting it stuck is very likely to get you killed by the next enemy to show up.

To be fair, if command and officers say it didn't happen, and everyone underneath tells you it did. It most definitely happened. General Public: "Hey, wasn't that town full of civilians?" Military Command: "No, it was a deserted town repurposed as an enemy supply depot." Military Grunts & NCOs: "Oh, that place, yeah the enemy took shots at us and hit Doc, so we leveled it." General Public: "So the town didn't have any non-combatants or civilians or anything of the such?" Military Grunts & NCOs: "We took out an enemy threat that was using the town as refuge and we weren't willing to lose our guys dragging out a fight." In all seriousness, if troops says it happened this way, it probably happened the way they're telling it, since military Command structures don't want to admit that, yeah our guys killed prisoners, or wiped out a town full of civies etc.

@@n8zog584The sawback was issued to higher ranks as well as engineers, so they were seen as distinguished. German dress bayonets from that time and earlier are often sawbacks. The milling off of the teeth was done at the factory, typically.

From what I remember, the average German soldier hated the thing because it would get stuck so often. They would either toss it and just use a shovel or file the teeth off themselves. The 1897 was probably hated more.

The sawtooth knife is not really like the sawback bayonets, it’s more like a machete with saw teeth, which is also why it’s larger and is curved. Sawback bayonets were shaped like regular bayonets but with teeth on the spine of the blade and they were designed so that the victim’s innards would be ripped out of the body along with the bayonet, which is why it was seen as especially inhumane. German soldiers being executed for having one likely did happen even if it can’t be confirmed, unless it was only a rumor that was spread intentionally to deter the use of sawback bayonets.
