Great post here, and I agree with you 💯. Robert Rosie Rosenthal had a fascinating career and was one hell of a pilot. There is more really cool stuff to come with him if the show holds true to Donald Miller's book. The man was a legend, as were so many of these men who served in WW2. What a generation of men! 19:11 this was a highly frowned upon move during WWII. Both sides agreed that shooting at a bailed out pilot was going too far. However, there are isolated incidents where such events happened. In one case, American airman Richard Peterson witnessed a single German pilot doing this. So Peterson went after this German pilot but didn’t shoot down the plane completely. Instead, Peterson shot up the plane enough so that the pilot would have no choice but to bail out. When the German pilot did so, Peterson practically unloaded the 8 .50caliber machine guns into this one guy. In his own words “damn near emptied my guns into him.” There was also a secondary incident when a Luftwaffe pilot actually helped escort a badly damaged B-17 back to friendly territory after it fell out of formation. The German pilot’s reasoning for this was because in his mind, the bomber (given the current state) was no different than an parachuting airmen and he remembered the day his CO said to the entire unit “if any of you shoot down a parachuting air men, I’ll shoot you myself.”

These weren't isolated incidents. War over western front was conducted in white gloves, eastern front - starting from attack on Poland, from the very beginning - was a genocidal affair in everything Germans applied themselves to. Strafing columns of refugees and soaring parachutists was pretty much a standard practice.

The events of this episode depicts the darkest days of the U.S Army Air Force, Black Week, October 1943. They lost 60 B-17s, 121 received minor damage and 17 were no longer air worthy, the number of crew killed was more than 600, almost 20 percent of the men sortied.

JACQUI, I'm pretty sure that the slo-mo eye to eye contact between Rosenthal and the German fighter pilot was a nod to one of the only surviving B-17 pilots that actually might still be alive but he was alive up until a few years ago at least, his name is "Lucky" Luckadoo! I saw an interview and also a question and answer session with Lucky where he described EXACTLY that scenario during one of the missions that he flew!! He described the German fighter as being so close that he could look in the eyes of the fighter pilot!!😮 This episode shows the reason why Buck and Bucky were praising these guys on their flying skills a couple of episodes back!! Rosenthal definitely showed his flying skills by his evasive maneuvers and ability to fly his plane in a way to give his gunners a better vantage point to shoot down the enemy fighters!!! If you thought your blood pressure was high this episode wait till next😮😮

(In my opinion) being on the crew of a bomber in WWII is the least desirable job. What I love about Masters of the Air is that it captures what is so hard to describe. On a bomber you’re trapped. You can shoot your machine guns, you can fly in a tight formation, you can do whatever you want but luck is the only thing that can keep you alive up there. I see so many details in the show from minuscule to large scale details that match up with WWII that I’m so happy to see.

Great reaction like always, Rosie Rosenthal did dogfights while stationed in the United States. He used skills learned there in his actions. during that mission. It was only his third mission on his way becoming a legendary pilot. He had to describe it to Curtis LeMay the big boss. And Joseph "Bubbles" Payne didn't actually die on this mission as he wasnt actually on this mission. but i can see why they did adapt it storywise. As he did die on another later mission which was really a ridiculous decision by a later commander of the 100th. Keep up the good work.

I think it's important to remember that while they don't have the interviews like Band of Brothers and The Pacific (they are all gone now), this is still base on real people and events. Main figures in the show die because they died in real life.

Not quite right on either point there. There are a few members of the 100th still alive (although none of them are depicted in the series), the youtube channel 'American Veterans Center' has released a number of interviews with some of them and you can probably find more elsewhere. Much of the show is embellished or composites, or otherwise changed for 'artistic' reasons (much more than BoB or The Pacific). Bubbles did not die on this mission, he served as lead navigator for a number of further missions and was eventually killed over the skies of Germany in April 1944. The letter to Crosby's wife bit is just made up for the show, there is no mention of it in Crosby's memoirs.

The pilot with the big, blue eyes is Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal. He was Jewish, which was a partially why he became a pilot. Which adds to his perspective on the war. The trailers hinted at it, by having his voice over a shot of a train of Jewish women and children.

I will say, I love what they have done with Buck Cleavin. Whether he is alive or dead (which I wont spoil either way) ITs the unknown that they have given the audience. ITs a small taste of what they truly went through in WW2. When a plane went down, you had no ide if a man was dead like Kurt, in the hands of the resistance like Bailey and Quinn, or a POW, like we know from history so many ended up. If there were only some parachutes, you had no idea who was under them. That unknown for us, is what they are trying to convey, in the smallest way that we would, as viewers, understand what they had daily in WW2. Its a brilliant piece of story telling, that is helping make this show so freaking fracking brilliant.

The slow motion might seem cheesy, but there's accounts of pilots and crew describing things as "slowing down", in the middle of a fight like that, to the point they could tell you the color of an enemy fighter pilot's eyes and hair. You get that rush of adrenaline, get into a hyper-focused state of survival? It's not as "Hollywood" as you might think.

The bases had people responsible for packing up the belongings of crewmen who did not return. Their unofficial job was to 'sanitize' the items so nothing embarrassing would be sent back to the families (like boxes of condoms or explicit letters from girlfriends) Crosby was on leave during the Munster mission and got the news by phone. They probably changed it because it would be a repeat of the Bucky scene from previous episode. Bubbles did not die on this mission but on a later one. They probably included it here because they did not have space for it in the remaining episodes.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned that the U.S. spent the first part of the war doing daylight precision bombing. This meant that they flew their missions in daylight at low altitude. They were easy prey for flack gunners. Jacqui was mentioning civilian casualties. The Air Corps tried to limit the number of civilians that they killed. The RAF did not. They had already been subjected to months of the Luftwaffe bombing civilians in 1940 (The Battle of Britain.) Rather than putting their aircraft and crews in the most danger possible, they flew their missions at night and at high altitude. I don't think that U.S. bombers did a night mission before Dresden. 8:52

This episode was just utterly shocking, even though most of us know how bad the Munster raid was. I know some folks are upset that Bubbles Payne is depicted dying in this raid instead of the actual raid on which he was killed (in April 1944) I don't have a problem with the change, because it is unlikely that they will be able to cover that raid, and we don't want to just have Payne just disappear from the show. We need to feel that his loss has impact on those who care about him (just as every man who was shot down was loved by someone, had a family and friends). We get to mourn for him through Croz. I agree with Jacqui on the 'Go-Pro' shots. To me, they add a level of immediacy and realism, making us feel like we're there on that plane. I didn't like one or two of the shots of the take off (when the camera follows along with the aircraft rolling, which would not be possible with a real camera) but overall, that scene was astoundingly good. I love how we got to hear and experience the build up and early portions of the raid, to see how much is going into it. Again, it adds immediacy to it. I also agree with the other folks in the replies: Rosie Rosenthal was a f**king legend. What a hero. One thing that I noted, was how isolated Royal Flush was, when the rest of the 100th was gone, with the rest of the bomber stream waaaaaay out ahead. It was not only scary, the feeling of isolation, but also, realistic in that some accounts relate how some groups would get shot to hell where other groups on the same raid wouldn't even see a German.

37:44 About blood pressure and heart rate (I know that Jacqui is done with these but if you need help) hit pause, stand up and stretch the ligaments in the back of each leg. They tighten up in a fight or flight reflex, which is what that is. Stretching those ligaments will loosen them, signaling to your body that the fight or flight is over.

30:13 Jacqui is talking about the obviously high casualty rate. I heard an anecdote from a veteran interview in a documentary. A Medal of Honor recipient from the infantry got assigned to the Air Corps. I think that he made one combat mission before requesting a transfer back to a ground unit. You are completely exposed during a daylight, low altitude mission. You are too low to hide in cloud cover. You are huge, compared to anything else around you other than another B-17. It's a TURKEY SHOOT for the flack gunners.

I know people who just haven’t paid attention to this show and it breaks my heart. Every episode has been perfection. I was in with the first three episodes. But these last few episodes have been PHENOMENAL. The filmmaking; the homage and honor paid to these brave men who faced the impossible. You feel their resolve breaking, the roots of the ptsd. The hopelessness. How heavy casualties are even if it’s not thousands of men. The fact it’s so few men dying here in comparison with the men laying down their lives elsewhere reminds us that death is not about numbers. It’s human lives, and war makes it impossible to hold onto anyone. Mortality. It has the energy and heart of band of brothers but really feels like a child of The Pacific. The European front on the ground was brutal but you feel that brutality and lack of letup here as much as it does on the pacific front. It also explains the folly of the idea of sending bombers to attack the concentration camps. Not only was there political opposition but the 100th and other air groups had no way of both going that far into Germany or flying through Germany’s defensive countermeasures.

35:05 - "vertical stabilizer". The rudder's also attached to it. (sorry..in addition to movies/TV, I'm an aviation geek, too 😆) Another great reaction. I think the reason your channel's so popular is because you went to film school, and bring some great insight into how these stories are told, and made. Your observation that earlier episodes showed what their mission was, and that this one tried to show what it was like to ride on the plane itself was spot on, IMO. I still think the greatest thing about when we (my career was TV) went hi-def wasn't the improved resolution, but the change in format from 4x3 to 16x9. You could shoot scenes more like a cinematic work. And the performers didn't have to change their performances for the 'small screen' anymore. That kind of thing (and streaming, of course) breathed fresh air into an increasingly stale industry. Thanks for sitting through these episodes for us. Yeah, it's rough..but it's war. And I think these fantastic people making the thing have crafted an amazing tribute to the people who actually lived through one.

This was perhaps my favorite episode of the series so far. The action, dialogue and character development within this episode was incredible. So many people out there have criticized the series for losing the main characters early on. Yes, there are some time inaccuracies as far as when certain people actually died or when certain raids happened, but for the most part the film producers are trying to show us that people we like and die can go at any point. As others have said, this series was never intended to be a clone of "Band of Brothers," "The Pacific" or even the rarely mentioned film "Greyhound." It is a story of its own, giving us a glimpse to what American aircrews felt, saw, smelled and breathed during the dark days of the Second World War. May we never forget their sacrifices!

I think as you begin your reflections on this episode you hit the nail squarely on the head. I have resisted the urge to compare this to BoB...and do get little miffed sometimes when folks say it is so much inferior to BoB. I would NOT say inferior (at least not much)...but certainly different. Because as you (with hammer in hand) point out...the nature of ground combat and air combat is SO different. Also some folks have complained the first 4 episodes are too repetitive (more being miffed). BUT...that is air combat as experienced by the "bomber boys". Mission: Fly to target...hit flak...flak stops...face fighters...bomb target (hopefully have made it this far)...Return to base...hit flak...flak stops...face fighters. Lather, Rinse, Repeat! The toll of that is shown in this mission...the crewman on the returning Fort that says..."I'm not doing it again...they can't make me". I am glad they are finding ways to change the perspective and I do think we're about to see a different aspect of what the men of the 8th Air Force faced in the final episodes. Back to my resistance to compare to BoB/The Pacific (yeah...we all do). At the beginning I placed this squarely between the two...it's been moving closer and closer to BoB level of production/story/etc.,. as each new episode drops. FYI: I totally nerd out over the aviation bits. I was blessed to go inside one of the few remaining flying B-17s several years ago. For a plane that looks so big on the outside...they are amazingly cramped (and that lower ball turret...NOPE). Thanks again. I look forward to your review of Episode 6.

Joseph "Bubbles" Payne didnt actually die on this mission but i can see why they did adapt it so he did for the story. Also the Munster raid it is true only Royal Flush commanded by "rosie" Rosenthal was the only 100th plane to make it back from the bombing.

Crosby and his crew were actually on much needed RandR when the mission took place after their crash. They set up a code with base to let them know how it went. It was so bad that the base broke the code in telling crosby. Crosby told the rest of his crew and there was just silence.

Yep many of the airmen were conflicted about this mission and also realised that it was switching tactics. Many well known account's of the briefings for this one.

The time period of this episode things were BAD! But things will change, changes to aircraft design and the use of external tanks will enable 8th AF fighter groups 4th and 56th etc. to escort bombers all over Europe. Tactics for bomber and fighter crews will also improve! During this "dark time" Clark Gable "The King Of Hollywood" had Joined the USAAF and became an officer he trained as a gunner ( for crew backup) His primary Job was to film a documentary (it's on KZbin) He flew a good number of combat missions, some of the aircrews felt that he had a death wish! Jimmy Stewart was also assigned to the 8th AF Bomber command flying B 24's and saw a great deal of combat! "Real Hero's" among "Reel Hero's"

@@jameswg13 - You clearly do not understand the rules of storytelling, because this is a case of Chekhov’s Gun. The only reason a line about replacements being deployed can exist, is if one of the lead characters is being introduced as a replacement pilot later on. Otherwise that line would never have been included, because it was not going to benefit the story. No replacements appeared in the second episode. Meaning, the line was referring to Episode 4. This series is not a documentary, and must follow the basic rules of storytelling.

@ChienaAvtzon you do realise this was real life and lot of replacements especially with losses and also time gaps. Line in episode 2 is around July 1943 as it is pre trondheim mission. Episode 4 is October 1943. Late September 1943 at earliest.

If you care for some other movies, then "the bombardment" "land of mines" "april 9th" "this life" and "flame & citron" is some strong contenders. they are all danish made and have a focus on the start of the war, during the war when denmark were bombed to save the resistance groups but sadly the mission also ended with a catholic school being hit. they cover some of the best known groups and individuals of the resistance during the war. and how the danes felt about the germans and treated german POW's after the war. they are all praised for the historical accuracy and for the very human perspective. there are no real heroes, it's not like band of brothers where they showcase brave heroes that run into battle or the generic war movie where they make a huge last stand. it's all about the people who were there and made the choice to fight for not only themselves but everyone else so they could see denmark as a free country once again. denmark lost after 6 hours in an action from the politicians that in the end saved thousands of lives but is a fact most people forget or is ignorant to

Both Episodes 5 and 6 were directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Both of them deserve more credit for their work IMO. I firmly believe that CAPTAIN MARVEL is one of the most impressive and subversive MCU films, and their direction played a role in that.

@axr7149

@@braeddie Why not? It does subvert the expectations of a superhero origin story (normally you begin with a normal human who gains powers and then learn to adapt and accept it, while this one starts with someone who already has powers but is trained to suppress their humanity, with the arc being a person who learns to find and embrace their inner humanity and integrate that, with the mentor being the antagonist). Basically CAPTAIN MARVEL made humanity the superpower. Brie Larson deserves a lot more credit for her internalized performance here. It is one of the only MCU movies that I feel managed to successfully overcome genre limitations and integrate the sensibilities of a character-driven drama (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movies are the only others to pull this off in my view).

@@axr7149 - But in regards to “Masters of the Air”, the reason Episode 5 is subversive is due to it following history. There is a trope in WWII films that the replacements are cannon-fodder. Whereas, Rosenthal became a living legend for being the sole survivor of Munster on his third mission.

Although I am enjoying the show, it jumps around too much and focuses on the two Buck's way too much as well. Rosenthal and Crosby way more significant stories and as amazing as the Tuskegee air men were, jamming them into a show that really needs two or three more episodes was just too much.

Post war the surviving pilots discussed with one another why they think they suffered so many losses on the munster mission. The common consensus was that after egan plane went down, crank and other's who took the lead accidentally dropped altitude while trying to make sure chutes got out of egans plane etc which unfortunately left a large gap in the formation fighters got through. Noones fault just unlucky
@ChienaAvtzon
@ChienaAvtzon 3 ай бұрын
I listened to an interview of Rosenthal, and while he did not say it outright, it was obvious he the Munster disaster was preventable. It had nothing do to with bad luck. The original 35 crews of the 100th were incredibly undisciplined, and not nearly as talented as they thought they were. Not one of them knew how to fly in formation correctly or switch positions. Meaning, everyone from top-down was at fault. I would faster believe the pilot who survived, than the POWs who were just covering their behinds after the war.
@jameswg13
@jameswg13 3 ай бұрын
@ChienaAvtzon I think that's an incredibly harsh assessment and a dangerous way of thinking as well. As is touched upon in episode 6. To disregard people's opinions as POWS , on top of that rosenthal and other replacements benefited from lessons learnt in their training as well as changing strategy and fortunes of war. Rosenthal himself was shot down twice Munster was probably preventable to an extent but the was also bad luck in terms of the fighters being late and expending extra fuel , one of thee largest concentration of luftwaffe fighters in an attack. The loss of 4 forts before they even got near the target due to mechanical issues. So so many factors.
@ChienaAvtzon
@ChienaAvtzon 3 ай бұрын
@@jameswg13 - I am well-aware Rosenthal was shot down twice, and what happened each time. The opening credits even show him after being shot down the second time. However, it was well-documented the military originally was not going to send the 100th to Europe, due to how undisciplined they were. So, it is not a dangerous assessment to blame the POWs from Munster. Most of the men in the 12 planes died. That is the fault of their commanding officer and the lead planes. Egan literally bragged after the war, that using the mission as a form of revenge was an honor. Those do not sound like the words of a man who was humbled by his experiences in the Stalags.
