The famous Antiques Auction of 1947 was held here. The Lowther Castle sale was the largest country house auction of the 20th century. And you can still buy items from that auction today!

My fathers ancestors were the de Lowthers of Lowther Hall, well before the Earls of Lonsdale. We go back to Hamon de Lowther in the 12th century. My Lowthers moved to Ireland (one was Master of Horse to the Duke of Ormond) then to Pennsylvania in The Colonies. I'd dearly love to get my hands on one of those auction catalogs!

I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. That whackadoodle Yellow Earl had a LOT to answer for. The sale made antique lovers/dealers happy ever since, but... grrrrrr. (BTW - the best thing in the video visually was Rosie of course. ) What I want to know is how to spot Lowther Castle items "in the wild", i.e. not in an auction catalog. Probably can't, alas. Brown wood bits these days probably sell for less without adjusting for inflation than they did in 1947. Meanwhile, the stone and wooden bits of the castle itself are through the (now nonexistant) roof.

The only way to tell is by auction descriptions, or if you’re lucky enough to buy something with an old lot number on it and then you research it to find it came from the castle. You’re right, the antique furniture would have cost more then than it does today!
