This wasn't great.... but it's also hard to accurately review

Episode 4 of "The Acolyte" is out and its clearly apart of a two episode arc, so take our review with a grain of salt its going to be hard to judge this episode before we episode 5.

The lightsaber "fighting" will be everyone separated in the cloud with flashes of lightsaber clashes from Sol's POV, signifying the death of the red shirt Jedi they brought along, before Sol catches the baddie's saber on his own. Then the scene will cut like they did every time the lightsabers first connected in Ahsoka. We'll see Mae and Osha or some other not-lightsaber nonsense before cutting back to Yord and Jeckie arriving to help Sol. Jeckie will get grabbed and have a knife held to her neck, from the trailer, so the baddie can get away. This isn't going to be an awesome lightsaber battle; they've dropped the ball too many times for me to be convinced otherwise.

Yeah. I actually thought it was good. It seems like a lot of folks just don't like serialized, character focused, stories... Or they just want to complain. It's a mystery, of course it is going to be a slow burn. My one real complaint so far is that they should have dropped the entire season instead of doing weekly episodes.

I really liked from an acting standpoint the shot where the black figure slowly descends unfocussed behind Osha while she has a look of complete and utter terror on her face. That was really well acted and made. It had a really nice horror touch to it.

This episode to me furthers the theory that Mae/Osha are 1 person or more likely that Osha recreated her in the thread after she died. Soul tells her to come on the mission, she excitedly asks if she's back in the order, later when she's feeling positive about the mission, Mae suddenly pivots to want to turn herself in, mirroring Oshas positivity toward the Jedi

You of all people have to see that this show is a complete slap in the face to all of the star wars we know, they made Anakin (THE ONLY ONE BORN OF THE FORCE, until these twins appeared out of no where) and The Chosen One Prophecy completely void and made Plaguis and Palpatine look like copy cats instead of them going thru the hard work they actually went thru to study and meditate by saying they got the idea to manipulate the force to create life from these witches, which is not the case at all, what really they were doin was trying to become immortal not create life per-say, if I'm not mistaken, and the force itself made Anakin to combat them and bring balance to the force, and what made Anakin special was just that, the only one born of the force because the force willed it but yet these unknown witches out of the blue could easily make not 1 but 2 born of the force what 2 of the most powerful sith lords couldn't do for years on years, and they do it seemingly with repercussions from the force, im sorry but no, this show is not star wars, it is tryin to undo everything we know about the lore and rules of the force and star wars itself, this show needs to stop

Episode felt slow, and the acting/dialogue was a bit clunky early on, but I was still on the edge of my seat, and the ending was masterfully done. Felt like a horror movie - one of the best entrances to a SW project I can remember. Hoping next week’s is peak.

The way they did the audio on that scene is bizarre, it gives it this really intimate quality that makes Osha's teasing about Jecki missing her feel HARDCORE like flirting. And then Jecki touches her arm, which would be a totally normal expression of sympathy aside from the fact that she's a jedi. We very rarely see Jedi make physical contact with other Jedi in any kind of emotional way. So while I get the feeling that they were just trying to show Jecki being empathetic in these scenes, it comes across in a weirdly sensual way??? I also definitely didn't get the impression Jecki was of age until this episode. I would have guessed like 16 in the first couple, which gave those scenes all kinds of weird and uncomfy undertones

Lucas has said his goal with Star Wars was to recreate the sci-fi serial vibe of shows like Flash Gordon he enjoyed as a kid. Flash Gordon was goofy and over the top like all sci-fi eventually. I think ppl are over thinking this series. Long running stories like Star Wars or Dr. Who can’t always be perfect. Hopefully you can get something that’s different or a fresh take on an existing thing, which was the goal of Star Wars in the first place.

I used to like Star Wars for the same reason I like many fantasy worlds. It provided an escape from the world I live in. The deliberate decision to modernize Star Wars for "modern audiences", thereby injecting the culture wars into Star Wars.... thats a problem for me. It defeats the purpose of escapism for me.

I had the biggest jump scare with a Star Wars moment since Kylo Ren killed Han Solo. I actually love the twists and the misdirections keep going. I read a tweet earlier about how streaming broke the audience’s brains with series binging, and I agree. I LIKE the weekly drop, even if it ends with a cliffhanger that makes me mad and apprehensive when it ends. Looking forward for episode 5. 😊

Alan, I think your video about Kimir being a sith lord is going to age well. He literally left Mae in the middle and was off screen for a long enough time to take his sith lord form and kill Kelnacca, and then come back. He allows himself to be ensnared by that trap and hanging helplessly, sensing Mae's betrayal, and then he easily escapes when they're all gone and reveals his sith lord self.

I'm usually on a similar page with your reviews. Unfortunately with this show in particular you're playing it safe. You don't wanna be categorized as a bigot for a harsh review nor a simp for a soft review. Yet sitting in the middle makes you sound weak. It's clear you care about Star Wars but every review you say "maybe this, maybe that" giving a lack luster show another chance and another and another. You spoke about liking the lore which contradicts everything this show has done. Unfortunately this show is making you a hypocrite. Honest question. My feelings about the show that nobody asked me to share but I'm going to anyway: 1) the fans aren't unhappy because they're a bunch of unreconstructed racists, and studios should stop pulling that card every time somebody doesn't like their product, 2) the show doesn't break canon and someone needs to get Star Wars Theory back on his meds before he has a damn stroke, 3) there is no "agenda" that I can see, unless we're saying that simply having a racially and sexually diverse cast constitutes an "agenda," 4) Amandla Stenberg is a babe despite the weird hair style they chose for her, and I'll die on this hill, 5) Qimir is the best character, 6) I now want a Mae/Qimir buddy cop/odd couple/road trip movie, 7) Qimir is clearly the Sith lord unless they're using him as a red herring, 8) speaking of the Master, part of me thought it was actually Sol until he got sent to the gulag with the rest of the Jedi, 9) I find the "falling off the shoulder" way the Jedi wear their robes to be incredibly off putting and I wish the costume department would stop dressing the cast like a bunch of discount cosplayers, 10) Lee Jung-Jae moves funny as if he's uncomfortable in his costume and it constantly bothers me, 11) the direction in episode 4 was complete ass, and it reminds me of the Book of Boba Fett, 12) despite that, Qimir/Mae and the appearance of the Master were solid, 13) the opening scene was so bad that I sat here making a "wrap it up" motion with my hand and ignoring the dialogue, 14) other than the fight scenes, the show's production values remind me of Star Trek: The Next Generation, 15) the way the Master yeeted everyone at the end was worth the price of admission.

I'm still convinced Qimir is The Master. Him acting all spooked about what the Master will do id Mae fails her test just sounds like he's trying to spook her into not backing out. When it becomes clear Mae has had a change of heart and is no longer on the path to the Dark Side, Qimir's entire demeaner changes as he says "He'll kill you..." It's like he's thinking to himself "Uuuuugh...that was a waste of my time. Well, gonna have to clean house and leave no witnesses." Him going off to get some water for Mae also felt suspiciously like him going to grab his helmet and lightsaber in case of this very eventuality. As for the clunky dialogue...yeah I agree, but the Prequels had a lot of that too. Let us not forget classics like "I don't like sand..." and "Only a Sith deals in absolutes."

Yord is gatekeeping, drawing a line between Osha and the Jedi. "You left. You didn't complete your training so you don't get the perks of being a Jedi. You are a civilian, a lesser being than we of the Jedi Order." There is also, perhaps, a hint of, "You left me. We were friends and you left."

Qimir is certainly not playing with all his cards on the table. _ While the master may have provided the location of Kelnacca to Qimir...they are most likely the same person (or maybe even twin brothers?? lol). Qimir seems quite glib and very capable of spinning believable yarns. He's shown a lot of wisdom and smarts, and certainly knows how to manipulate people. He wasn't threatened by the Jedi who showed up at the potions shop and was able to get them to come back later.

In writing and especially in screenwriting and direction you have to write your characters with the most essential dialogue for the scene, if its not essential for the scene or for character development then it doesnt really have a place in the scene other than to stretch it out. For instance Yord telling Osha that the blaster is Jedi property isnt essential as nothing changes between the scene before and after between the two characters. Yord is adamant about getting the blaster back, Osha is adamant about keeping it and in the end Osha keeps the blaster. This could've come in handy if Osha was the one who killed that flying bug in the forest instead of Sol cause she or Yord could have then remarked to each other "Its good that you/I kept the blaster." But instead of clever dialogue which itself could have been referenced multiple times to allow for character progression and a gradual increase of trust, we have this. In terms of how the series has been prevented I think it would have been so much better if this new sith figure was introduced at the start of the series in the midst of battle. A fight between Jedi and Sith isnt new, but if it introduced more characters into the fight and made it more dramatic then we could have unique intrigue into the show and a mystery at hand to follow. Instead the show and subsequently the writers, directors, and cinematographers dont trust the audience enough to pay attention to the details to discover the revelation of this grand mystery, so they lay it out as plain and stark and straightforward as possible so that it appeals to the lowest common denominators of the audience. In this aspect its the critics who dont give a shit about the lore that proceeded it and only watch it for how the story presents itself. And by appealing to that very low margin since Disney only accounts for critic score and viewership to determine overall success, it bypasses and disregards everyone else who genuinely wanted to enjoy a new Star Wars show unburdened by any characters that proceeded it. Hate watching still counts towards viewership. Look at what happened with Velma. Dont feed the Gremlins.

Personally, I think the Qimir is neither the apprentice nor the master but the acolyte trying to become the apprentice to this era Sith Lord and the whole thing with Mae is some kind of trial that the actual Sith Lord gave him.

I actually liked episode 4 better than3. Though I do agree with your critique of the episode except I had no problem seeing May becoming suspicious and and giving up her quest to kill the Jedi. I did not expect her to go all the way to wanting to turn herself in but I did expect her to stop and possibly flee. I also knew that the Wookiee would be dead before she discovered him. I had a problem with osha just letting the dark side user just walk slowly up to her in a strange unsettling place and her not at least try to back peddle to get closer to the Jedi

Yeah, I was so disappointed in Alan that I had to unsubscribe. He is freaking awesome when it comes to lore, politics, themes, and tech stuff, but he's been going in a weird direction lately. He wants to distance himself from "haters" and be blindly positive about this drek, not to be associated with bigots. Well, I'm a Latina, and this show is insulting to men, women, children, and people of all colors who love Star Wars--not because it's "woke.* It is poorly written, filmed, and acted, with nothing exciting or new, just reframing and retconning what came before. The Jedi are not evil. They simply became complacent after 1000 of not having to fight the Sith. Good times make weak people, and they grew weak; they lost their guard, they conflated the Republic with order, and came to love the rule of law instead of justice. But they were ever evil. Sith are evil -and while they're more fun to read about and watch, they are still the bad guys.

I agree, episode 4 was the weakest episode so far because of writing. Specifically, because of dialogue. Some conversations seemed disjointed, like the characters weren’t really talking to each other, but rather making random statements because the plot demanded it. It didn’t flow like a natural conversation. Other times, I was left wondering why the dialogue even initiated in the first place. It was a constant sensation of, “why is this character saying this, and why are they saying it now? What provoked this thought?”

The end of episode 4 was great. I think the Sith Lord could very possibly be Qimir. I mean he gets trapped and Mae leaves him, he knows where Kelnacca lives, and we don’t see him after he’s trapped. It’s probably him and to be honest, I don’t like that. He just doesn’t seem like sith material Edit: Not to mention the Sith Lord also has a relatively skinny body type. I know the cloak covers the body but, Qimir is a skinnier guy so it could make sense

Acolyte episode 4 I was a bit disappointed, not a lot happened in this episode, the very ending has me excited for the next episode, but yeah not a lot happened, except the Wookiee Jedi got killed off screen so that was disappointing, we don’t even get to see him in action. I would like to point out that the Cerean jedi we see at the meeting to discuss arresting Mae was credited as Master Ki Adi Mundi... It was never really mentioned in canon, how long does his species live for but what irks me more is the fact that he was part of the meeting that discussed the potential threat of a dark side user, training Mae to go after the jedi that were there at her home on Brandok. And yet, when Qui Gon Jin informs the high council during Phantom Menace, that the assassin he faced on the Tattooine was trained in the force and wield a lightsaber, that he was a Sith Lord... The first one to say anything was in fact, Ki Adi Mundi, his line being, "Impossible, the Sith have been extinct for over a millennia." Overall, I'm enjoying the show, but this right there... That to me at least, seems like poor writing. It means that they probably didn't do enough research before including such a pivotal member into that meeting, who would later deny the existence of the Sith without even flinching. Now, as Alan has said before in other videos related to the Acolyte, until all the episodes are out, we can't really know the direction the showrunner and writers are taking things. Perhaps later on, should the master be defeated, those part of that lesser council will choose not to include this whole story in the archives, and those (like Mundi) would be told that the master was nothing more than a fallen jedi (and not a sith). Could very well be that the Master, is in fact a fallen jedi and the true master (Plagueis) remains hidden in the shadows, awaiting his next, and final pupil.

Sol and, to a lesser extent, Qimir are some of the more interesting and engaging characters helped by good performances, Sol with empathetic, passionate demeanor as he searches for the truth and a way to help Mae even if she may not deserve it, and Qimir with his initial impression of being a simple, small time crook being contrasted by his intelligence and degree of involvement in the conspiracy suggesting he is more than he seems (which will likely end up with him being a Darksider, even THE Darksider). The other characters, while they have the potential to be interesting, don’t feel as developed in a satisfying way or have characterizations that make them as compelling as an openly emotional Jedi struggling against his bureaucratic and dogmatic colleagues to salvage a delicate institutional issue or a mysterious low life working with a cult of Darksiders in a plot against the Jedi.

The long conversation with Jacki and Osha, to me it reads as two people who don't want to say good bye, so they keep saying stuff to not leave. At least that is how the conversation felt to me. I know those of us in the media industry sometimes forget to take a step back from the technical presentation aspects, and look at it trying to imagine how someone untrained might view it (especially when we have an absence of other cues such as music, or an interruption which explains that odd choice). I think it is a problem of the long form content cut into tiny pieces... this conversation would not feel as stilted and odd if we had also seen the follow up conversations that will occur as the story progresses. I like how some commenters called me a bigot for episode three even though I stressed that the writing is the issue. Not the actors etc. And now you all are switching tune. I mean I’m still watching with y’all but this isn’t the greatest of Star Wars writing. Lately the animated series have more meaningful impacts than the live action. And it should be both ways. But when we praise content of this nature produced by Disney they count us as the fans who want this stuff when in actuality we don’t. We just want good stories not jumbled messes. Now I’m not saying rate the entire series as ass. Episode one and two started decent had potential for three and four. But three and four. Just contradicts and kills a lot of concepts. Destroyed lore in certain areas. And when you ask nicely. Then raise your voice even shout and scream and beg for them to just take their time and create a better brand for everyone not just one particular party. And we still gets this. How does one side of the fandom expect us to just be happy with what we view as a turd wrapped up in golden paper. And the crazy thing is we aren't asking for a lot. Others might. However we fans whom understand the greater picture or vision who have explored the EU just want good stuff even though its subjective. You fuck up the sequels, then you give us shit like Andor. i understand some like Andor but in actuality that show put people like me to sleep. And those ratings weren't great either. Could've been a series based on a better spy with more screen time or better pen time like Theron Shan set in the old republic when he was a double agent infiltrating both republic and sith empire. But then they give obi wan low budgeting and more towards projects like the Acolyte. When if they did Obi Wan right it would have made then more money and more. softened the tension. they ruin boba fett turn it into the mando show to save it. then we get ashoka just like obi wan. show has good moments but its not enough to uphold the entire series of said show in that regards. Then we are over saturated with star wars as well for the wrong reasonings. We have passer by fans leading these projects or people whom dont know the lore out of wilful ignorance etc. Im just tired of one of the most accepting fandoms turn on each other or unite because of hate over shit like this. Then it scares people off and we get called toxic and more.

Agree that the writing, dialogue and tone were awkward and inconsistent. The end was creepy and I personally think that the sith is Vernestra, she has been low key hampering the investigation, she also manipulates a room full of jedi, including Ki Adi Mundi, into not discussing anything with the jedi council. Mundi was a by the book Jedi who would have reported to the Jedi council (someone in that room would have). So far they think they are dealing with a rogue jedi who is training some dark side force acolytes, not an actual sith. However after this episode, it should be clear to any survivors of this encounter that Smilo Ren is indeed a Sith. This series is not well written but it is not as bad as people are saying. This episode had beautiful cinematography and music. Last week was a flashback from one person's point of view, which is why it left us with more questions than answers. I'm interested to see how they tie it all up.

That's been one of my gripes from the get-go for this series even before it aired, When I heard 'half-hour runtime', I instantly went: "30 minutes avg per episode with this 'murder mystery' shtick marketing is pushing? During an era that the majority of Star Wars fans have disregarded as 'Disney slop' [because why do books about the 'High Republic' when the Old Republic was already there and clearly superior? That was the initial reaction to the High Republic star wars books. Can't blame say I blame them after the dumpster fire that was the SW: Aftermath trilogy] and are clearly expecting more 'Old republic', less 'prequel trilogy' background scenery? Yeah, that runtime is going to bite them in the ass." If the runtime per episode was longer the surrounding galaxy could be more fleshed out and feel bigger than it does in the Acolyte, and we might actually get a fight scene for the Wookie Jedi (you know, the species that can canonically rip people's arms off in close combat? Killed by lightsaber slash or not, the fact we didn't get to see him _fight_ before he was killed off is just plain insulting). I swear, the only good thing to come out of this show has been Lee Jung-Jae's consistent performance so far. Everything else is just so all over the place it's hard to take seriously.

Alan, I have nothing but tremendous respect for you and your content, but I cannot understand why you’re being such an apologist for this horrible series. Ignore the culture war nonsense. This show is poorly written, poorly directed, poorly paced, relies on generic tropes and poorly developed characters that the audience simply doesn’t care about because the writers have done nothing to make us care about them and ultimately this series is just fucking boring. While you’re right that this is the weakest episode so far, they’ve all been weak and they’ve gotten progressively worse week-to-week. The physical sets were beautiful? As a buddy of mine in the industry said, “What did they do… raid the greens section of the property department?” Please stop blaming us for Disney-Lucasfilm’s continued terrible choices, please stop gaslighting those of us with legitimate criticisms of the show and please stop gatekeeping (“True fans of Star Wars?” Really?).
