It is certainly possible the head was recut, but it is also possible that it is smaller than the rest of the structure simply because making a giant human head out of stone is difficult. The body was created by cutting it out of the bedrock, so they could make that as large as they like, but a proportional head would have been much harder to do, and unstable. Its size could just be a result of the practicalities of ancient stoneworking.

Explain? The quarry for the Sphinx was clearly dug after the causeway leading to Khafre's horizon was already built. So do you believe all the Pyramids are also from that pre-Egyptian people? @@Philliams I think most students of ancient Egypt, even those of the most casual nature, understand that the Step Pyramid was the first effort at a pyramid (as far as we can tell). It is reasonable to believe that an earlier civilization might have occupied a portion of the Nile River Valley, just as it is reasonable to believe the Sumerians already knew quite a bit of their vast knowledge before entering lower Mesopotamia. Doesn't mean in either case that the official interpretation of the historical record is not correct; just that there is a possibility. At one time, not all that long ago, we did not know there ever was a Sumer, or a Mycenae civilization, or that some of the places mentioned in the Iliad actually existed. Where I think some of the 'what ifs' are missing the boat is just this: all we hear about is the Stone Age culture that grew out of the Great Ice Age, circa 30,000 or so years ago. Yet there were large parts of the globe that were not cold, not covered in snow and ice. Might not some of the peoples living there have created something we are as yet unaware of?

It has been stated by paleoclimatologists that the Sphinx was, for many, many years, under water. The levels of striations that are clearly evident along the side of the monument is reminiscent of the same striations made by water in the Grand Canyon and may other places around the world. Being buried in sand would not have resulted in the physical appearance it has today.

Back in 1924, H.P. Lovecraft ghostwrote a story "Under the Pyramids" (a.k.a. "Imprisoned with the Pharaohs") in which he mentions the idea that the Sphinx was something else first, and the face was recut by order of Khephren to be in his image. I don't know enough of the history of the Sphinx to know if this was already a popular theory a hundred years ago, or just something Lovecraft dreamed up on his own to suit the needs of his story, but either way, it's not a new thought.

Well, it was never a lion to begin with.. Lions have a trademark tuft at the end of its tail and the Sphinx does not have this clearly visible tuft. Millions and millions of dogs were found mummified in Egypt and probably makes more sense the Sphinx was at some point modeled to look more like a dog than a lion..

definitely Anubis, The Egyptians did everything to very precise proportions. The Sphinx does not conform to that of a lion. It looks just like Anubis guarding the Temple of Osiris (the great pyramid). And it is far more ancient than people suggest having been built at least 20 thousand years ago, well before the great ice age. I've researched this enough to realize that history isn't always about what exists, but more of what is missing from the years in between.

As a small child, when I first learned about the Sphinx and saw it in a book, without any prompting or second thought, I immediately assumed that the head was obviously recarved from its original depiction. Obviously, I learned later that it was supposed to have that oddly disproportionately smaller head from the beginning, but it is impressive to see that even a Smithsonian entity is at least tacitly endorsing the idea that it was originally a lioness. I don't think it was a jackal or Anubis if only because lions, as elaborated in the video, were venerated and culturally revered, and the depiction of the body looks much more like a lion than anything else. Generally, I don't put much stock in these rabbit holes, pseudo-archaelogical arguments, or conspiracy theories in general, I like to believe I'm very grounded while maintaining openmindedness, but I do put a fair amount of substance in the "Sphinx was originally a lion" hypothesis. At the same time, I do severely doubt these more fantastical arguments that the original Sphinx predates Dynastic Egypt by tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years according to some iffy figures, are quite silly and wholly unfounded that leave a separate, tremendous pit of unanswered questions.

That's fascinating, because so of my research, the research I've seen from others, and ideas of what its features could've originally been are that of Anubis (a jackal)... I've never heard of it possibly being a lion. The Anubis theory seems to fit better and make more sense. Also, I'm really getting into the research that shows it might have been hundreds of thousands of years old, due to the water erosion around it which could've only come from a time when the climate was far different than it has been for hundreds of thousands of years. What about the Sphinx in Romania and the Hall of Records they have found inside the Bucegi Mountains around the year 2000 . They have found a viewer and 10,000 metal discs - 1 disc takes 2 days to view and shows a star map of distant galaxies . Giant spaceships used to hover in orbit and send shuttles down for supplies and to download information - just like our gas stations . They have also found there the Valley of the Golden Thrones - a room with chairs of solid gold and a golden table . The chair seats are 6 feet off the ground . Inside the mountain they have also found the 3 tunnels . The first tunnel goes under the Mediterranean Sea and comes up under the Giza Plateau where there is a large hidden complex of more than 1500 rooms . The second tunnel goes the 800 miles into the hollow earth and the third tunnel goes to the mountains of Tibet . Peter Moon has written many books about this discovery . Just like Admiral Byrd flew into the hollow earth both at the North Pole and at the South Pole and met with the large people living there . Lush vegetation and a black sun in the center makes things grow big .

This makes sense, some distant Pharaoh originally built this as a lion, representing Sekhmet or something, then at the time maybe of the Pharaoh Menkhkaura, who in his arrogance had the head changed to his appearance, some Pharaohs may have gone mental due to the power they had. (like Hitler did for instance) Akhenaton was another "weirdo", and Horemheb, who attacked Tutankhamun's statues & artwork.

I don't think the pharaoh's had anything to do with the original carving of the sphinx, it is already accepted that from the water erosion at the site, the age of the sphinx is at least 8,000 to 10,000 years old. Well before the Egyptians.

The head of so called 'Sphinx' had been repaired multiple times in the last 100 years, that's why it does look newer in comparison to its body. Please, do some basic research before making any wild conclusion. If anything, this was a dog like thing, not a lion. Just pay attention to the length of its foreleg. No cat has such long foreleg, but dog does.

lol geologists are at odds with the Egyptologists on the age of the sphinx. Geologists say the weathering of the limestone on the body is from rain. The last time that area of Egypt had enough rain fall to cause that degree of weathering was around 8,000 to 11,000 BC which is about the time of the Younger Dryas.
