What Rep Roach said is so correct, paraphrased he said something like, “The storm is hard, the recovery is so much harder.” This is true, especially so for those who flooded, but whose houses frames weren’t destroyed. The cost of maintaining your entire life while repairing your home are so very hard to navigate. You still have to pay your mortgage. You have to manage repairs when workers are slim, you have to rent another home with diminished supply, and you’ve lost irreplaceable memorabilia, not just “items” that are replaceable. The emotional and financial tolls are incredible. If it’s roof damage, you continue to flood every time it storms until you can get properly tarped. You have to fight for insurance payouts even when you have full replacement and flood insurance. It’s a nightmare that lasts years in some cases. We faced it in Irma. It’s doable, but it takes years and sometimes you aren’t sure your finances can stretch bc you are competing with every other damaged homeowner. I’m praying for everyone, but more so for the ppl who weren’t wiped out bc it’s actually harder to repair flood damage than to rebuild a home that’s deemed unrecoverable. Maybe this Rep’s soon to be realized “lived experience” will help lawmakers understand the problems Floridians face. Congress should have dealt with this after Irma and Michael. They need to make the changes to insurance laws, giving options for all constituents rather than focusing all their efforts on social, “woke” and Disney wars.

@@jasoncrandall73 The weather people are making the cones so big, it includes the entire state. I've lived through a few hurricanes. The people in Fort Myers' didn't get enough time to evacuate. @@fritterfoof5146 I think you're just being too judgmental with the people. Fort Myer's only had less than one day to prepare to get hit with a almost 5 hurricane. Before that, they were expecting the "outer bands" which is a completely different story.
@jasoncrandall73
@jasoncrandall73 2 жыл бұрын
Because they cannot at the moment be that precise. They tell you that all of the cone is a possibility but look at the center & if it shifts more either way as the Hurricane Center updates the models your area can get a direct hit (if it stays in the cone). Look at earlier models that showed the Big Bend area/Panhandle area of Florida was in the cone but the closer Ian got to Florida they were less & less in the Cone.

I noticed in Carolina that the house's are built up higher level and like a place under house structure where water can flow through, it might be good to rebuild with that in mind of corse safe sturdy structures with flooding in mind takes money. I'm at a lost, trying to understand why America is so obsessed in building wooden structure especially on the cost line??? There shouldn't be any wooden structure on or near the beach in south Florida! I see in Oklahoma every year; wooden building are crushed like match box, and they rebuild the same crap. Why can't they build concrete building with block and steel, and proper anchor into the structure of the building to secure the roof. Isn't it cheaper to build tough and strong once? Than to constantly rebuilding each year with the wooden crap!!!

I saw what Katrina did to several of those “Hurricane proof” structures in Mississippi in 05/06, marketed to people after Camille nailed them in 69. Nothing but a slab with girders sticking out. Now, I realize construction techniques have improved since then, over 50 years, but one thing is certain, nothing mankind builds is impervious to the forces of nature. It’s generally not a question of ‘if’, but more one of ‘when?’. Wherever we are, there shall it also be.

It's interesting that in venice Italy also called sinking citie, but much of Italy is around the sea ,and they do build up on hills more when possible, and stone structures especially near the sea. Caroline has flooded a lot and there are some nice two story structures where the water kind of just flows underneath and back out. But of course nothing no matter how well built is 100 percent in this crazy world. God bless Florida and all those living on coastal places be safe.

We moved from Michigan to Fort Myers in September 2021. Now we have nothing left at Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, etc. No beach front left. Everything destroyed. Tourism destroyed. Thankfully we lived just far enough inland to avoid the surge and flooding. We were not in an evacuation zone. We were on high ground (28ft). This hurricane was monstruous. The winds were insane. Never seen anything like it in my 50 years. Where is FEMA? People need help. People need rent relief. Many lost their cars, jobs, etc. People can’t get gas to go to work. Many employers no longer exist or are without power. Many had to evacuate. They can not pay for hotels and rent at the same time. It’s ridiculous. Something needs to be done. No one should have to worry about this stuff right now. Evacuating the hospitals took jobs away too. Major disaster physically, mentally and financially.

Agree we are given hurricane prep lists by various media supplies. Be Prepared. Its called "hurricane season" for a reason. Even if you do not have much money, you can buy a flaslight one payday, batteries the next. Make a small note book with all contacts, emails, phone numbers, important numbers of bank account, IRA, Investment accounts. Put the notebook in a ziplock bag. Prepare a TO GO Emergency backback just for a 72 hour supply some water bottles, easy snacks, utensils for tuna pack or whatever all put in a 2 gallon bag to keep waterproof and clean. Each person has their own. If you have children color code the backbacks for each and they have their favorite snacks, activity books, crayons whatever. Parents handle extra supplies if child is small. Then when notified of need to evacuate you are ready. Last minute, put all checkbooks, cash, credit cards, phones and other electronics in waterproof ziplock. Then grab bags and go.

Any existing insurers must start to refuse to insure building right along vulnerable coastal areas, because sea level will rise and disastrous storms will continue to grow more frequent. Trillions to rebuild where there is simply no wisdom in rebuilding. It’s time to face a hard truth which should not be politicized, because this truth will affect everyone.

When I moved to Florida, I didn't decorate, I threw away a lot of stuff.. I don't really have any valuable antiques or family airlumes and if I did, I'd probably leave it somewhere safer and not on the coast. I just can't see myself doing all that in hurricane alley. My house is plain looking and I gave all that up to be near the beach. I kind of treat most of my furniture and things expendable. I even buy used stuff a lot that I won't get attached to. Kind of sad, but this is Florida and I don't want that kind of heartbreak. But I packed my cats and placed my important papers in a fire/water proof envelope and left for Pensacola during this storm once I knew the track would be nowhere near there. It was weird too because not a lot of people fled to the direction I did. The roads were clear and it was a peaceful drive. Everyone trusted that they wouldn't be in the path too much. You have to watch that track closely every hour knowing that it could change at any minute. Never get complacent in this state. If the track is at least 40 miles from your location, plan to leave in case it changes to your direction. And follow Denis Philips on Facebook who gives updates on the tracks constantly.

The wise man built his house upon the rock, and a foolish man on the sand. If the water rose 12 feet, then any house on the ocean has to be built on min 12 foot pilings (above existing water levels). Wow...how much is this going to cost?? Option 2, a new ocean front RV park - no homes, only RV with running motors. Welcome to 2022. Saludos Amigos
