Mind-boggling data, as presented. But - as seen in chart best 50 days come just after worst 50 days. If both are removed (exit before downswing enter after upswing) then cagr 11.75%. If only best 50 removed (exit after downswing enter after upswing) then cagr 0.75%. If only worst 50 removed (exit before downswing enter before upswing) (idealistic view) then cagr 22% ! Best, as you said, not to panic and follow a strategy

My opinion is that thumbnails are just fine. In fact, a little bit of ambiguity always results in increased curiosity of the viewers with ever so minimum attention span. Weightage as follows - Finance - 10%, Consumer - 30%, IT - 20%, Chemical - 15%, Industrials- 25% - Market cap to be maintained in the ratio of 35% Large cap, 45% mid cap, 20% small cap - 2. Excellent analysis. After watching the video i did similar analysis on nifty 50 for last 15 years. Nifty CAGR which is 15.2% drops to 6.7% on skipping top 25 days. On avoiding 25 worst days it jumps up to 25.18%.

The whole point of buying an index fund is that you don't time it any further so why would someone get out of the markets..moreover a person being out on all the best 50 days is just too rare to ever happen to anyone..but it's a valid point that don't time the markets and keep investing..

What about staying out during 50 worst days? It will be even more mind-boggling because market falls are swifter than gains. The risk of sitting outside may be a risk worth taking during exceptional times, if one isn't confident with 12% assurance for future on basis of historical returns. You may still opine to remain fully invested throughout, but at the he least be honest to bring both data points with neutrality.

@@AlokJain, Here the couter point is about avoiding down days by sitting out for time being after already capturing many up days in last 4 years. You can't time, you can't avoid, that's an assumption which appears a truth (at least statistical truth) by innumerous repeatitions. A few (statistically, a minority) believe that fall is inevitable soon and market will find one or the other reasons). Are we honestly drawing the picture that in usual bull era, avoiding up days is better than avoid crash days? Thats true statistically true :).

I just said that if you put one-sided argument, it appears a logic of convenience. Rather, if you put argument and counterargument (by numbers) and still state the same opinion, it looks much better. Like, here your point on the difficulty in speculating the bad phase of market rationalizes the opinion but not the statistics you have put because your statistics are one-sided only. Calculating return after removing best 50 days is meaning less as most of those best days where followed by worst days...it will only make sense if we remove top fifty best as well as worst 50 days.

I always felt the best investment is when the market is falling steeply - unlike traditional wisdom of not trying to catch falling knife - provided we are sure that we are buying stocks or indices that have good fundamentals backing them. It will be great to extend this study to see what could have been the results had 1% top up has been done to investments every time it falls 5%. how would that change the final result ?
