There is a similar process one can use for helicopter ratings. A person can get a rotorcraft gyro-copter certificate and build hours in the gyro-copter and add rating for the rotorcraft helicopter.

It says in the reg that you need 200 hours in a heavier than air aircraft in addition to the 25 hours

It does say that, but that is alternate qualifications. You are missing the word "or" at the end of 61.129(f)(1)(ii).

@@ToddShellnuttCPC thankyou for the clarification. Totally missed the “or” I do have a couple questions if you have the time. 1. Can the remark section of a logged flight be supplemented outside of the pilots logbook? 2. In one of your videos on flight reviews you talked about being able to do a flight review in any airplane that you are rated in (category&class under 12,500lbs) do you need the proper endorsement (high performance, complex, tailwheel etc.) to give the flight review? If not is there a reg on that?

Another great video, thank you Todd. I heard a student ask a question that stumped me and I was hoping you could answer. If I’m a CFI, without a tail wheel Endorsement, I have a client come in that is requesting a flight review. This client owns a tail wheel and has the endorsement. May I proceed to give a flight review to this them? Is there a difference if their last flight review was 23 months ago vs 25 months ago (meaning they would not be eligible to act as PIC). Thanks!

Sorry for the delay - Yes, you can give a flight review in this instance. That instructor would meet all of the requirements in 61.195(b)(1-3). Just because it's legal does not mean that it's safe!

But where is the market for glider CFIs? I only know of 3 glider locations in my state (a big western state) and those are several hours drive from the main population centers. Meanwhile I have 6 airports with at least 10 flight schools in a 30 minute drive.(Plus 2 sea plane bases.)

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't 61.129(f)(2) also state that for a glider commercial pilot license you additionally need 200 hours of flight time in a heaver than air aircraft? So realistically that says to me you only safe 50 hours from the 250 commercial requirement.
@ToddShellnuttCPC
@ToddShellnuttCPC Жыл бұрын
This is a common mis-read. You have to go to the end of the line above that, 61.129(f)(1)(ii), where you will see the word "or". So it's paragraph 1 or 2, but not both.

This was meant to compare the glider CFI to the airplane CFI. No matter how many months it takes, it is still cheaper and faster to get flying than an airplane. When you couple that with the aircraft that I mentioned in the video, it's even faster.

Hey Todd! Great videos! CFI initial next week. Quick question (61.63) When it says for an Additional aircraft category rating. A person who applies to add a category rating to a pilot certificate: (1) Must complete the training and have the applicable aeronautical experience. What is that specific training ( Private 61.107) or (commercial 61.127) or is it something else to the instructors discretion?
@freshlicks
@freshlicks 2 жыл бұрын
You base it off of the students current license. Are they a CPL rotor that’s wants to get SEL? Then you use .127. Additionally, use .129 with it. As far as the specific hrs they need, some of their rotor time can count for this rating they want to get (look at 61. 129 a(1)). Read the regs well. No such thing as discretion when it’s written in black and white.
@ToddShellnuttCPC
@ToddShellnuttCPC 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The best answer here is from 61.63(b)(2), "Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found competent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and proficient in the appropriate areas of operation." With the key phrase being "in the appropriate areas of operation". These are the area of operations located in the ACS that are specific to the additional category, and that can be found in the table located in the appendix on page A-12.

So do you have your glider rating? 25 hrs in a glider is a lot. It could easily take a season/year to get 25 hrs and 100 flights in a glider.
@ToddShellnuttCPC
@ToddShellnuttCPC 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that in a conventional glider it would, but in a motorglider you would not have to wait on the most ideal conditions. This would greatly enhance the speed in which you could obtain a glider rating.

“Glider means a heavier than air aircraft….whose free flight does not depend principally on an engine.” The Pipestrel Alpha Trainer is a Light Sport AIRCRAFT. By definition, it is an “airplane”. Motor glider is not defined in 1.1.
