The sanding and fairing is still happening, but so will be the painting- well, the bottom painting. But it isn't as simple as just throwing paint on. All our paint is expired, but we are gonna try to put it on anyway... This steel sailboat restoration is always keeping us guessing.

As a retired paint specialist, i would not worry too much about expired and old solvent based paint. As long as it mixes well and behaves normal in application, you are good. The black layer on the bottompaint is just some binder and, as we saw, it mixed well together. Experation with waterbased paints is a totally different story. No frost is allowed and as we know, water is quite prone to become bad with bacteria. As soon as the waterbased paint smells, get rid of it.

Yeahhhhh! That must have been so satisfying. 🙂 A trick you likely know about is to alternate antifouling paint colour. So now (even if it is not on the entire underwater section) if you see some red antifouling paint you will know it is time to apply a few more coats.

Hi. As a steel boat owner myself I can’t comment from experience regarding paint that’s gone over expiration date. With regards to 2 pack epoxy fairing compound I used that was 3 years out of date worked as good as the stuff that was in date with no issues. I guess if it’s unopened there shouldn’t be any issues. Test on some scrap and if it’s cures at the rate it’s meant to then no worries.

It set pretty nicely so seems like all is fine, but time will tell! Someone else commented saying they used to be a paint rep and the epoxy should be fine as long as it still mixes, so sounds like we are coo on that front. The bottom paints are more of a question but also hardened so I think we are ok

Why are you not painting the whole hull while the boat is out of the water?

We are, but bottom paint works a lot better if it goes on right before it goes into the water, so the rest of it won’t be done till we are back in the boat yard. And the top sides are being painted this weekend.
