Because of Derek’s videos about sleep apnea, my dads life was saved. He had been showing signs of sleep apnea for years, but would never go in to get it checked despite my warnings. After two nights in ICU from critical hypertension (overworked heart from apnea), he finally got a sleep study done. 90 episodes per hour was the severity of my fathers apnea. If it weren’t for these types of videos, I might have never warned him. After receiving a CPAP, his life has completely changed for the better. It’s like he’s a new man. Thanks Derek for educating us about the importance apnea awareness. This shit is definitely no joke…

All this sleep apnea stuff doesn't affect me in anyway (hopefully never will), but seeing how passionate you are about advocating for health stuff that will literally save people's lives says a ton about how genuine you are about helping others when you could easily cash grab with the platform you have. My dad has sleep apnea and is always tired. He does not want to get it looked at. He blames it on him working hard in the office but I really hope he turns around soon.

Had to give up my room the other night for a friend. Had to sleep without my cpap. Woke up and went to my room after they left, slept for like another 8 hours once I had my cpap on. People who sleep without cpap don't get good sleep!

I found my big brother dead and cold 3 years ago. sleep apnea. he was a little more husky than post Malone, looked like him besides the grill and tats. he had just turned 29, was a middle school history teacher, coached cross country somehow, and had really bad asthma. like my whole family, he was kinda short and stout, thick/muscular. short thick muscular neck. he had died in the middle of the night. by the time I found him he was stiff and cold. he wasn't on any drugs or anything. just turned 29. just getting his life started finally. this shit is real. if you're a single dude like my big brother was, and are having trouble sleeping or waking up tired, please get checked out. if your have a girlfriend or wife, someone who sleeps in bed or the same room as you, ask your girl if you snore really bad. husky dudes, thick dudes, fat dudes, body builders whatever, don't take this shit lightly. from a little sister who is forever fucked up, just like my mom and little bro are, do it for yourself and them.

Sorry to hear that. I know how it feels. I died when I was around 31 years old in this house of mine and the former girls called ambulance. I got relived twice. Never felt the same after this... I had massive neck. 58-60 cm at the time. Long and athletic back then with massive build, but to no real avail. I didn't breath for long time before they came and gave me shots and started up whatever they did.

if you read the book "why we sleep " you'll know that not only the title is not clickbait but that Derek is spot on - anything that can improve the quality of your sleep, especially when you have sleep apnea is a MASSIVE game changer. It doesnt matter how much it costs, the benefits in the long run will far outweight the price.

Yep, sleep is honestly an investment. I never have an issue buying things to improve sleep, ie blackout curtains, new pillows, etc. Quality, consistent sleep is probably the healthiest, longevity inducing thing we can do

Thanks for shedding light on this, Derek. I've worked with people with Sleep Apnea for 10 years. As you say, putting people on CPAP machines changed their lives and saved them from chronic diseases. However, often missed in those who are not obese or have significant muscle mass is breathing dysfunction and/or over breathing. In bodybuilders, it's not only the size of their neck but also the metabolic requirements to hold such a vast amount of muscle, in turn, producing higher levels of CO2 and causing over-breathing. On top of that, Leptin is a powerful respiratory stimulant, and I believe both bodybuilders and those who are chronically stressed (cortisol seems to impair leptin activity) may also play a role in this issue.

“Over-breathing”… I suffer with anxiety, health anxiety and for years was at doctors, hospitals, “I get pins and needles in my hands”, “oh, you’re breathing too much, go away”.. What? Breathing too much? F-off, no such thing!… About 10 years later I had a MASSIVE panic attack, thought I was gonna die, girlfriend locked me in the house because I was going bananas, screaming on the floor, she phoned an ambulance.. I was seconds away from going to say goodbye to my kids 🤦‍♂️ and then a paramedic turned up, walked in, I’m screaming “look at my hands” (they were all twisted up like some horror movie shit).. She goes all straight faced, authoritarian “yeah, you’re hyperventilating, calm down”, WHOOSH, it alll went away 🤯… She sat in my house for 3 hours explaining what the hell I was going through, taught me how to get rid of it when it happens (hold your breath) and all sorts, she changed my life.. 10 years of thinking i was going to drop dead any second just gone through a little bit of explaining.. Haven’t had any serious issues since, I still “over breath” here and there but I can get it gone in minutes and it never really bothers me mentally because I understand what is happening and that it ain’t gonna kill me… Anyway, I’m very drunk (alcohol is an anxiety annihilator too 👌) and I need to go to bed.. Sorry for boring anyone with my life story 🙌 (not sorry 😎)

@@Primitive01 I've been dealing with anxiety and panic disorder for like 8 yrs. Been to so many hospitals and doctors. The breathing techniques don't work for me to good. I'm an alcoholic and it kills the anxiety but makes it worse afterwards. I've slowed down a lot and tryin to give it up for good. But the withdrawals from the alcohol also intensify the anxiety. I always have it. Sometimes it gets up high but I've learned how to live with it and have plans to start practicing meditation and other stuff also. It's definitely fucked me up over the years though. One of those things you can't understand unless you've been through it

@@jamesmason9016 I won’t talk about my own experience too much, because it is too much and I’d take up the whole of KZbin explaining everything.. But what I will say is everyone is unique, everyone’s issues are unique and the fix for everyone is unique.. If I had the time and enough lines to detail everything I would, because even if a tiny thing helped someone else it’d be a great thing but I just can’t.. It’s so complicated and stems from childhood, brought up by a single mother of 3 with undiagnosed (at the time) schizophrenia and psychosis and as I grew up made some poor decisions that would have lifelong implications.. We aren’t born anxious, things affect us and have big impacts on us and my advice to you would be to try and figure out what the heck it is that is messing with you so much that you can’t relax and just chill… A relationship? Do you live in a shitty area? Childhood? Anything.. I don’t wanna sound harsh but only you can change the way you feel, wether it’s through actually doing something yourself, surrounding yourself with people who make you comfortable, I don’t know, everyone is different but you need to do something, you need to make a BIG change in your life but it’s down to you to figure out what that change needs to be… I know that’s sounds weird because I’m sitting here saying “a women told me to hold my breath and it cured me”, but in reality all it “cured” was the physical affects of anxiety, affects that actually made my anxiety ten times worse, I was essentially scared of being scared when at my worst… But it didn’t fix my brain, it didn’t stop me thinking the way I thought that ultimately ended up causing anxiety.. I left the comment because I read “over breathing” and it’s something that has had a big impact on my life and if someone else can be helped purely by learning that holding your breath can change your life I’d be happy.. But I wouldn’t have a clue on where to start when it comes to dealing with the mental side of things.. anxiety can be HORRIBLE, I know, I know what it feels like to be seconds away from death, I’ve been there in my own head and if I could I’d tell you the magic to change your life, but it’s on you.. And the alcohol? I don’t know, I found out about a week ago that I’m an alcoholic.. I started drinking last December and I’ve drunk almost every evening since, not because of anxiety, that had nothing to do with it, I just for some reason decided to try some things and I really enjoyed it, I like the feeling of being drunk… But last week I decided to stop, within a couple of hours of my usual drinking time I realised I was craving it, gave in a got some.. But it wasn’t so bad that I just can’t stop, I can do it easy.. 1st of Jan I’m gonna stop, and I know it won’t affect me in terms of anxiety so I’ve got no worries there and I also don’t have any advice for you there either because yes, I said it stops anxiety but I said that because this whole year I’ve been drinking my mind has been the calmest it’s been in about 20 years, so it helps, but it’s not a cure… I wish I could help you

I had a friend that died from this in his sleep. He was overweight, and also a smoker. The really sad part is that he lost his wife to cancer less then a year before. He took care of her at their house for months till the very end. He went through so much, but never gave up loving and caring for her. He left behind a 16yr old son. Go get checked gentlemen. If not for you, do it for your family

As a Respiratory Therapist, I’m glad Derek is shedding light on the problems of sleep apnea. Most people brush it off, but there are serious health consequences if left untreated, and if it is severe enough. A few seconds isn’t bad, but when you’re not breathing for 20 to sometimes 60 seconds at a time, that’s a huge problem. It causes severe stress on the heart, the brain, and other organs as well due to hypoxia during the periods of apnea, which is essentially low oxygenation within the body. CPAPs and BIPAPs are essential for those with severe sleep apnea. They may not be the most comfortable sometimes, but if you’re suffering from severe sleep apnea, please get a sleep study done. Those devices can save you years of health issues, both mentally and physiologically.

Haven't had a good night of sleep since I was 19 and got injured no matter how long I sleep I wake up exhausted and I've tested different types of schedules including 4 hours up to 10...none of them made me feel well slept I always feel exhausted within an hour waking up :(

I have severe sleep apnea with 25+ episodes an hour. I struggled wearing a mask for and would wear it about 50% of the time. Listening to Derrick talk about it and concise, pin point phrase he used “your heart is going to war every night “ really stuck to me. I won’t go to sleep without now. Derrick’s passion for helping out people with sleep apnea has probably improved and added years to peoples life.

I've been exhausted, brainfogged, demotivated etc for last seven years. Last week I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Apparently I stop breathing 16x an hour and get total 5,5 hours of sleep in a 9 hour sleep. Three months from now I'm getting my machine and I can't even even explain how excited I am. I know no other state of being other than exhaustion, shitty mood and a tough tough everyday grind. Once I was diagnosed I started to spread the word around me, many of my friends and family members are loud snorers and the negative effect of SA are fucking haunting. Cardiovascular issues, heart-attak, stroke, early dementia, erectile dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, depression, shorter life span (people with untreated SA die at age of 58, treated 78). If you care about your loved ones, spread the word. This is no joke. Thank you Derek for spreading the word.

I have same problem and had it for many years, would be on and off. One friend that has cpap he told me def go get a test done. I keep putting it off given would come and go. Then started happing more often found getting a new mattress and pillow helped a lot, for me i use the purple mattress & flat purple pillow but every one might have different things they like. Now I was looking past few weeks at how to get a cpap or something else to help so I don't have to go to a sleep doc and not have to buy an expensive device. I feel like they over charge for them given insurance pays for most people. But I should just buy a good one any way regardless the price to live life better. Wish they made it easier to get what you need or something that doest need to be an air pump. Really wish I could take clenbuterol again that helped soooo much. But if you get a cramp omg its bad, same time the cramp was worth how better I breathe and cut fat.

I just started using a cpap machine at 30 years old, been overweight and had sleep apnea essentially my whole life, didn't really know how severe it was. It had gotten to a point where I thought I was going insane, and I felt like a zombie. I would tell people all the time that nothing matters, life is pointless, bla bla bla. Its very personal, but I thought seriously about just ending my life on multiple occasions. I was having sleep paralysis episodes, would fall asleep at work, fell asleep while standing IN THE SHOWER and injured myself, would wake up in the morning on the floor of my bedroom with my mattress half off the box spring and pillows all over the place to the point where I stopped putting a fitted bedsheet on my bed because I would wake up wrapped up in it almost every morning. Fell asleep in the middle of conversations. I swerved off the road while driving to work and could have killed someone. That was the last straw, saw a Doc and they said I "needed a CPAP ASAP" I cried for hours when I woke up the first morning after using it. It changed my life significantly. I have energy, I feel rested, no migraines, I'm dreaming, I'm now starting to be active and eat well and be healthy, I'm advancing my career. Its so important to address your sleep apnea. I didn't get it looked at because I didn't know what sleep apnea really was and I had poor income and bad health insurance so i didn't want to "waste my money". I should have done it 10 or more years ago, my life would be totally different. You talking about sleep apnea was something (among other factors) that eventually led to me checking it out. Massive thank you Derek. People need this information, it really could save somebodies life.

Had my sleep study done back in Feb, communication between my dr and the sleep center is so slow (think sleep center is having trouble finding employees), but finally got my cpap titration study done last week. Hoping I can order my cpap in the next 2 weeks once the report is finished. I sleep on my side or chest to prevent bad snoring or stop breathing. Ready to get that good sleep finally.

When I was in middle school going through puberty I was really heavy and I actually had sleep apnea i went in for multiple sleep studies and was told id stop breathing every 15-30 minutes for up to 2 or 3 minutes at a time but I corrected it after losing weight thank God

My father at 67 and still kicking has had sleep apnea all his life and never used cpap. He's not fat and was actually skinny when when he was young but still had sleep apnea .I'm 49 and never heard of anyone dieing from sleep apnea.

This sounds like my life. The sleeping at bad times. I basically flunked out of college cause I was tired all the time. My fiance says I wake up multiple times throughout the night gasping for air. I follow asleep while driving all the time had to step down at work. I think I should look into this. The odd thing is I'm skinny not very muscular and definitely not fat. However my grandma died from sleep apnea and my mom has really bad sleep apnea. I think I'm going to look into this...

- Damn, all that and you're only thinking about looking into it.....ask your doc about depression also man cause you don't sound very thrilled about finding out what's been crushing you for years. Also, no idea what your fitness level is but if you're not hitting the gym, that will help a lot with nearly every aspect of your health but mental and physical. Good luck.

I've suffered with it heavily for 5+ years, even as someone that isn't overweight. I literally cannot sleep on my back or I'll wake up with insane headaches that last all day, choke on my own tongue/saliva, pause breathing for around 10+ seconds while asleep, have slow cognitive ability all day, forget what I did/ate the day before, and it even makes playing video games impossible. Something else I started to get was balance issues from blood pressure changes, and I'd feel like a zombie in public outings. Along with it majorly effecting my mental health in a negative way. One of the most troublesome things has been my inability to stream if I sleep poorly, or even record videos, because it makes reading a script and then record it at the same time, incredibly hard. For the longest time, I thought it was the effects of MDMA and LSD I did 20+ times in 2015/2016 catching up to me, but it wasn't that at all. One of the best ways I've combat it, is the use of an anti-snoring chin strap, and only sleeping on my stomach. I'd actually let someone break my legs if it meant getting rid of this permanently, because it actually ruins everything you do. It has affected my KZbin channel immensely during the prime of my growth.

Damn literally same. I feel like a zombie all day long and streaming/making YT vids is the hardest thing in the world even though I love doing it. I've also felt heart problems like literally feeling my heart beat 24/7, especially when laying down. Along with that, losing my balance, stuttering on my words, brain fog, the effects go on and on. For the longest time I just blamed it on anxiety and depression but after watching this vid i'm 99% sure it's my sleep apnea. Here's to hoping we both can get back to our once normal lives🤝

I love how Derek pushes sleep quality on his audience. I’ve had issues in the past where I was waking up feeling like absolute trash and kept having sleep paralysis 5/7 nights of the week, plus my test levels were down the bottom of the range. I seen Derek’s podcast with Joe Rogan so I spoke with my Doctor and went though multiple tests. Luckily I didn’t have sleep apnea but my blood pressure was through the roof and I was defiant in so many vitamins/nutrients. I fixed up all my deficiencies, my hormones corrected themselves, dropped 25kg and now my sleep quality is 9/10. I still have sleep paralysis once every few weeks but no Doctors in Australia have a clue about it, or what causes it. Would love to see Derek do a video on sleep paralysis as there’s next to no good information on it but I know a lot of people struggle with it.

Ive dealt with sleep paralysis a handful of times in my life and met a fellow who dealt with it and sleep walking and just randomly screaming in his sleep almost every night. He was an interesting individual who drank and smoked and I suspect also did drugs and maybe suffered from mental trauma and that is how it made sense in my head. As for me I only ever started having sleep paralysis when I got diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic and as time had gone on they have become very very infrequent. I tied my sleep paralysis and awful nightmares to hypos in my sleep which always woke me up, but that wasn't always the case, just a majority of the time. Now I have no idea what causes the nightmares as I have had them all my life. Unfortunately I wonder if your sleep paralysis is like my nightmares, but yeah it's hard getting help for something like this. Best of luck.

Could be narcolepsy? I’m in the same boat as you were with sleep paralysis almost every night and was recently diagnosed with it. Apparently it is one of the major signs that you may have it. Took me 29 years to finally figure out what’s going on.

Last year my dad finally got fed up with always being tired due to sleeping issues and decided to go do the whole overnight observation at the hospital. The doctors apparently walked into the room the next day completely white and obviously nervous. They told my dad that while sleeping he was only getting around 57% oxygen and that he should technically have died in his sleep years ago. They allowed him to bypass any wait list to recieve the breathing machine and he was able to use it the next night. He said he's never slept better since getting the machine, but the one thing that's changed is that he doesn't have the hallucinogenic dreams he used to, caused by the lack of oxygen while sleeping. One time he told me he had a crazy dream about caveman trying to break down his door and woke up to him hitting his head super hard on his night table 😅 But on a serious note, I really hope he rests much better from now on and that Post Malone deals with his issue or he could potentially not survive it. I wouldn't want to see such a nice guy go over something like this.

Sleep apnea changed my overall demeanour, making me withdrawn, irritable and constantly fatigued ..CPAP I'm sure has saved my life..my episodes were 55 !! Consultant rang me up the same day as he received my oxyometer results and the day after I got my machine..like you say absolute game changer..I can now train properly, my cognitive ability has improved and I've started growing again..a lot of people just don't understand how it can affect your life and I've actually was accused of taking some (thing) that was making me poorly..my kidneys were affected as was my blood pressure..brilliant video which I have just sent to my manager to give him some insight as to why I had to have some time off work. Keep up the fantastic job of showing people how to keep as healthy as possible whilst enjoying their hobbies etc .. Thank you Mark 💪

194cm, 105 kg, 18% bf, late twenties. Partner for years tells me i constantly choke in my sleep and stop breathing but i’ve always brushed it off. Struggled with sleep for years, cant get to sleep, can’t be woken up during sleep. Weeks worth of my life spent staring at the black ceiling for 6-8 hours at a time since the age of about 16. This might be the wake up call i needed. Pun intended.

It's my passion to help others with sleep apnea. Yeah. It sucks...but it beats the alternative! Thanks again for sharing this video!! You can see an Otolaryngologist or an ENT doctor (Ear, Nose and Throat). They will even do the sleep studies "in home" now....thigs have changed through the years!

I tried and tried with the CPAP, but could not sleep with it. Option if you can't sleep with a CPAP- try a blood oxygen monitor and tracker, one that will buzz you if your oxygen gets too low. I tracked mine and was only going below 90% a few minutes so it got better and is manageable now

I myself have sleep Apnea, over the last 3 years my quality of sleep has degraded to the point where I would fall asleep during conversations with friends, while at university mid lecture, I just didn't have any energy at all. My partner would regularly panic as I would stop breathing during my sleep, It got to the point where I was having 106 actions per hour, This caused me to have huge migraines and serious heart issues. Thankfully I now have a CPAP machine, and I have gone down to 3 actions per hour, my quality of sleep is so much better now. People don't realize just how serious this is for your body

In the same interview he says that he smokes around 40 cigarettes on a normal day and some days it can even reach to 80. So I would say he needs to change his entire lifestyle to avoid an early death.

It was never determined what killed my best friend but he was a somewhat successful bodybuilder and had been jacked since his teens. Whenever I'd crash at his place I'd be woken up by the walls vibrating or him waking himself up violently from the absolutely insane snoring. Throughout the day he'd take preworkout/uppers to make up for the zombie state after all the lack of proper sleep. Sadly passed away and was discovered days later in a hot humid condo, so his body was in fairly rough shape. I'm convinced that this took him out so please take this seriously. Mouth guard helped me out for the most part but could definitely use the machine. Just don't ignore the signs

im in my 30's and i've had the CPAP since 25 years old. It literally saved my life. My Dr. told me i had about 78% oxygen saturation in sleep (threshold for risk of stroke is 90% or under). Getting used to it was the hardest part, literally took years of trying to be able to use it comfortably overnight.

Somnologist (student but still) here (sleep doctor [for Derek]). to make it easy to understand - using sleep apnea machine when you don’t need it is safe for short amount of time. If used more than 120-150 days, it causes dependency and you might actually need one after.

Glad you mentioned mouth taping, though briefly. Doing this has prevented my sleep apnea and improved sleep exponentially. Sleep is key to being healthy, and feeling great. I should mention that I’m lean as and still had mad issues with sleep apnea. My wife had to wake me up to start me breathing again.

Idk but my dad has been miserable his entire life. He would drain his life savings just to be able to sleep through the entire night

@Sub_Second_ Life hey, does your Dad have an auto CPAP machine? I recently had to get one for myself so it's a newer model, and it starts with a low air pressure but automatically ramps up over time as I fall asleep. The tube has an electronic sensor so it can detect if I'm breathing air back out into the mask. If I'm not, the machine goes oh fuck I need a pump more air. It's pretty sweet.

After constantly feeling tired, lethargic and unmotivated, I decided to get a sleep study done. (With help from Derek’s videos). Found out I have mild sleep apnea and after getting it fixed my life, energy and mood have increased dramatically. I honestly didn’t realize the effect it was having on me but I’m glad I got it checked out. Even if you don’t think you have it, get a study done just to be sure.

It’s good you didn’t procrastinate! For me it got to the point that I’d wake up every morning with adrenaline “scaring” me awake. Feeling lightheaded and lethargic the first few hours after waking then being fatigued the rest of the day is no joke!

I don’t think I have sleep apnea but a couple years ago, after quarantine completely destroyed my already shitty sleep habits,I moved sleep to a number one priority and it’s really everything. It’s absolutely crucial and I can’t believe I had shit sleep before that and thought it was okay to be miserable all day just because I could still ‘function’

Sleep Apnea can also effect mental health. It made me have depression and anxiety for years. The brains chemistry undergoes a major shift when it's deprived of oxygen, so much so that it changes physiologically and causes mental health disorders that are hard to get rid of if it's been to long. @@z-MACE not entirely because a lot of my depression and anxiety came from the trauma the disease causes. Fear of death, and panic attacks gripped me for a long time. But the APAP/CPAP will regulate you and allow you to recover slowly. Please get the sleep help you need if you know you have apnea.

@@englehartd13 Dustin please try to comply to APAP/CPAP therapy. It is easier said than done but if you comply you will see a complete change in your mood. We are here brother and we are counting on you to stay in the fight. Stop letting something that you can control control you. Take responsibility. Sleep is not something we are suppose to enjoy, it is a restorative act and a part of life. Calculate the rest you need and implement the CPAP. Wear it often and get use to it. Become compatible and you will see yourself heal and get a better life. Do not be afraid. We are all here with you in this fight brother.

This past Monday I finally got my BiPap machine and although I'm struggling to adjust to it, I'm so damn eager to get used to it and finally wake up feeling refreshed! Thanks so much for spreading awareness on this. To address the potential negative outcomes of using a CPAP without apnea (albeit with my limited knowledge of physiology): creating positive pressure definitely increases the amount of air in your respiratory system, including in the dead space of the trachea/bronchi. This inevitably leads to increased O2 saturation in the bloodstream, especially over time. My understanding is that this could cause some degree of vascular atrophy, by which I mean that your body will down-regulate the vasculature to muscles and organs because it’s easier to provide sufficient O2 to those sites due to more O2 in your blood. While this isn’t an issue while you’re wearing the CPAP, once you’re not wearing it, you’ll have a harder time getting blood to those areas through normal respiration. This is the same logic behind high-altitude training, since a product of that is to increase vasculature to muscles & organs so that transport of what little O2 is available in the air is more efficient. This could of course impact performance, and it could certainly lead to other pathologies over time. Again, thank you so much for bringing attention to this disorder. Everyone that snores should have a sleep study done if your insurance will cover it. If you can’t, a mouthpiece could be a useful entry point for some. Just do some research before settling on a brand, since there’s a lot of variety out there

Living an unhealthy life style, probably taking drugs on a regular basis is probably the reason he wakes up feeling like shit. Pretty much guarantee if he changed his lifestyle his sleep pattern would change for the better.

Thanks for making this. This video was the kick in the rear that I needed to start using my CPAP, again. I developed sleep apnea in connection with a condition that is connected to my military service. Many years ago they gave me a machine, after an at home sleep study. I used it a few times and I didn’t notice much of a difference. I have another appointment this month with the sleep clinic and hopefully we’ll get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, I’m back using the machine tonight. Obviously, they wouldn’t have given me one if it wasn’t needed. You’re right this isn’t something to take lightly, if you’re sleeping badly, there is a reason. Go get checked out, it’s not a joke. No matter how big and tough you think you are, this can and will kill you early. Thanks for making this one! I’m hopeful that this content might save some lives and increase peoples standard of living.

I’m a fit 22 year old guy and I recently got diagnosed with sleep apnea after being tired 24/7. I’ve watched Derek for years say everyone should get a sleep study and I didn’t think anything of it. The CPAP machine has changed my life. Every young guy needs to get a sleep study

Another thing worth mentioning that applies to everyone is investing in a good bed. I didn’t realize how badly I needed a new bed until I slept in someone else’s memory foam bed and I actually woke up completely refreshed.

My life changed when I got a CPAP, I was in my 20s and in the army. Wasn’t fat, was in great shape but had apnea. Once I got used to the machine and face mask I felt like a new man. Now I can’t sleep without it.

Tell him to see Dr. Kasey Li in Palo Alto after he gets tested. There are surgical procedures that can permanently solve the problem so you don’t need to wear a CPAP forever. The cause of a small airway is usually under developed jaw and narrow nasal airway. There are procedures that will correct that deficiency. Dr. Li is the best and Austin could afford him.

I had Ballon sinuplasty done to fix my sleep apnea. When I had my sleep study done I had over 80 apnea's recorded in one night. I will never forget sleeping 12 hours a night just to feel shittier in the morning

@@BLAKDANGER Called a doctor's office and asked them to explain the process, they were clueless, so I made a GP appointment and got her to refer me to the sleep people (I didn't have to exaggerate symptoms but you easily could if you don't think they'll refer you), got an at home test kit, slept with a bunch of tubes attached to me, gave it back, got the results and was prescribed a machine. Really happy with the results and totally worth navigating the process

That's crazy I've been struggling with sleep for 5 years and just started a couple weeks ago looking into it because I can't concentrate for shit at work, I've never felt refreshed the past 5 years and feel so depressed it's ridiculous. I'll definitly check with a sleep specialist. Just seeing you talk about how game changing good sleep is makes me tear up of joy haha. Hoping I can find a solution.

Tape your mouth shut when you sleep. It forces nasal breathing at night. It's a cheap and easy alternative to a CPAP. It seems like bullsh*t, but it really works. Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide in the body, which leads to greater oxygen intake.

I did a sleep study in May and I had 30+ apnea events per hour. Derek mentioning his own use of CPAP woke me up to me getting the study. Down to average 3 apnea events per hour using my CPAP since starting treatment in July. Get the heated tubing especially for the winter (I'm in Massachusetts)

Similar story. It is LIFE CHANGING! I no longer wake up with head aches, no longer have the 2p.m. blues where I feel like I just have to shut my eyes. I am in my early 30's and single, I am in relatively good shape 6'2", 200, and thought for the longest I could just work out and get fit enough I wouldn't suffer from sleep apnea anymore. For a long time I was "afraid" what a girl might say when I bring her home and she sees my darth vader mask, but honestly, I have yet to meet one that cares. No downside in my opinion.

@@androidaccount7743 I talked with my PCP who ordered the home sleep study and eventually wrote the prescription for my CPAP machine. Not all PCPs do this though so you may need a referral to a neurologist who specializes in sleep medicine. Keep in mind there is a shortage of CPAP machines due to a manufacturer having recalls. After having my sleep study I had to wait 4 months until my equipment supplier received shipment. Hope this helps.

@@androidaccount7743 That is really a weird criteria. Very backward. I live in Salt Lake City not far from where Post Malone lives. They have a great sleep clinic at the Univ of Utah building I go to. Unfortunately I had a sleep clinic evaluation in SoCal in 2016 and my CPAP machine was on the fritz. The previous doctor had "lost" my original files. So I couldn't get a new machine unless I had the whole study all over again. It was going to be a 6 month wait. Then my Cardiologist in the same building leaned on the Sleep Clinic to get me in sooner. My bad sleep was causing some heart issues to get worse.

Glad to see you talking about this again. It should definitely be stressed that this is not just a bodybuilder or obese person issue, it can be any size person. I was diagnosed with depression in my teens, then hypertension in my early 20's, and didn't get a diagnosis of moderate apnea until 35. I am only 5'11 and 180lbs. I remember my parents recorded my snoring on one of those giant 80s camcorders because I didn't believe it was as loud as they said. Crazy to think how that could extrapolate out to all my other health issues later in life. If someone says you snore a lot or seem to stop breathing (or your child does), get a sleep study! Don't ignore it, or brush it off. I really think this is more widespread issue, particularly in America, than people realize.

today at the doctors office i showed her my testosterone results that i made without her approval (ive been going to her for the last 10 months because of bad sleep) and she flipped and told me i dont know what im looking at and that there is no use in testing my testosterone. Anyways my doctor told me that testosterone levels and sleep are not linked haha. Also my high blood pressure is not linked to my bad sleep she said. I am thankful for derek because for the past 6 months i could gain a lot of knoledge in endocrinology and how important hormones are for someones well being. I decided today that i will switch doctors. Sorry for my english :)

I can legitimately say that having a CPAP has changed my life. After getting used to my mask, I can't sleep without it. I used to fall asleep at red lights and doze off while driving. I haven't had a 'doze off' episode since.

I lost one of my close friends in the Navy to sleep apnea it hurts to think about from time to time because of all the memories I have I remember distinctly warning him about the dangers because his snoring was so bad on the ship they gave him his own corner with one friend to make sure he was alive. He failed to get a sleep study which was free for us while we were enlisted. One day he went to sleep and his wife was downstairs with the baby then she came up and an hour later she called several of us to watch the baby in a panic which we thought was really strange and she told us that he had passed with a heart attack and we were so confused because we were all in our early 20s. He left a beautiful son and wife behind I would get upset because I told him multiple times but I wish he proved me wrong and I was just being an asshole. If you get comments of your snoring from anyone take it serious and if you’re a little heavier and weren’t always try to lose just enough to try and combat it at the very least.

He was a great guy and even after 4 years I still have him in my contacts and it hurts when I’m making my rounds to check in on all the guys I will see his name and instead of making the call I will find someone to tell one of my favorite stories of him instead. His name was Case. One time we went up north to go snow boarding and Case being from Colorado had the most experience of all of us with driving in the snow and we had him drive when we got to that part of trip. This man proceeds to get in the front starts to drive and boasts how confident he is about his skills so much so that actually in the snow it’s easier to drift. We’re in one of our buddies beat up 90s Nissan Sentra the perfect car for snow covered roads with rental chains for added grip coming up on a turn Case says “Watch this” we all become scared for our lives as nothing but snow wall surrounds us on either side and we can’t see past the turn. He cuts the right and the car goes straight and turns with a second delay of when he turned the wheel I realized quickly we were not on the road he presses on the gas and it jolts us forward straight into the wall we went from the wall on the left side coming closer to immediately facing a wall of snow in front of us. We crashed. We all ask each other if we’re alright and we all are and we proceed to say “WTF CASE!” He doesn’t waste a breath “Did you die???” We switch drivers to the owner after pulling out the car. On the rest of the drive up the mountain he tells us after we’re all quiet to break the silence “I’m gonna be honest, my dad always drove and he just made it seem so easy. Guess it’s not. You’re pretty good dude feels like no difference from back here.” I couldn’t help but laugh at this idiocy. If we hadn’t been trapped in each others lives because of the military I’d never have met him but I miss the dumb stuff we got into.

I've had sleep apnea for years now and I finally got a machine last month hoping it would fix my terrible quality of sleep. (Spoiler alert, I still feel the same) But I think Derek pointing out if you still mouth breathe with the CPAP then all that air from the machine is going out your mouth and essentially going to waste. So now I'm gonna try the mask with the chin strap and pray that's finally the answer. Thanks so much Derek for all you do

It takes a while to feel any effects. In fact you probably won't notice the difference till the day you don't sleep with the machine usually when you don't sleep at home. I mouth tape with breathable tape to prevent mouth breathing it works great.

I think it's Medical B.S.. My father is 67 and has had it all his life ,even when he was skinny. He's never used a cpap machine ever. He does quit breathing in his sleep but starts back breathing after about 20 seconds more or less.

But for me going from 60 to 100 apneas an hour the first three hours I slept with it was like having the first sleep of my life

Derek, this is such a good topic to shed light on. yes there are a multitude of people using these everyday, but definitely a huge number of people who do not know anything about how these devices can change your life. I am a user myself. I technically have a BiPAP. So mine has a ramp up function and an inhale and exhale pressure setting. I cannot explain it well enough how this saved my own life at a critical point in my life. After my sleep study and the technician described what was happening to me during sleep it all made sense. I had been doing that since I was a child. Obstructive sleep apnea is the diagnosis, but I also tend to hold my breathe on my own for some reason as well for longer than 10 seconds at a time. my sleep was terrible and lived off caffeine. I fell asleep at work, in church, at the table, while talking to someone, and behind the wheel multiple times. Nearly killing myself the times behind the wheel. I ran others off the road, myself off the road, and nearly hit a dump truck head on. This was the last straw that finally hit me I had a problem and had to fix it. I have had my machine for over 8 years now and have not slept one night without since the very first night! Thank you for helping spread the word. A lot of people think they have to be uncomfortable. Answer to that, yes it can be sometimes, but when you experience full rested sleep once you get used to it, there is no more uncomfortable!

I had it as a kid. They removed my tonsils and reduced my soft pallet. Game changer. I spent all my teens chronically tired and uncapable of staying awake in class. At 19 I had the above mentioned surgery. It cured my apneia. I'm 35 now and also mouth tape. Never slept better.

@@Frank00000 you're absolutely correct. Gotta take care of your lady! Always change your filters and clean your hose. Also keep pets out of your room at night if you have to sleep with them get an air purifier. Check your house for mold. Anything and everything in the air is essentially aspirated into your lungs. These are all just precautions. If she truly has it, it is well worth it. I can't promote it enough.

Taping your mouth shut when sleeping works wonders against sleep apnea. It is cheap, effective and really works. Taping your mouth shut forces nasal breathing which releases nitric oxide. It has been a game changer for me.

Thanks for this video, Derek. My dad and his brother have awful snoring issues and I will make sure they check this out. I'm a skinny dude myself but for some time now I wake up very tired after sleeping for 8 or more hours, don't hear my alarm clock go off etc. I often oversleep and miss morning classes or skip breakfast because of that. Thankfully in Poland I see that even 90% of costs can be covered by our national health fund.

I watched an uncle of mine go through this. the last few years before his passing, he would literally sleep sitting on the floor because he couldn't breath. I was young at the time and remember thinking this is not normal. he needed one of those machines. at last, sleep apnea is not what killed him.. life is crazy

Thank you for this. I can't even begin to explain how different my life is with the cpap machine. It's shocking and difficult to even quantify. I refer to my life before getting the machine as "when I was sick". The thing is, people who haven't been diagnosed they don't realize they feel bad. They've felt that way for so long they just assume everyone feels like this. The tipping point for me was when I fell asleep on the highway in stop and go traffic with my, at the time, 2 year old in the back seat. The traffic had stopped and I closed my eyes for what I thought was a second. Next thing I know I wake up to horns blaring and cars trying to drive around me. That was the wake up call. (pun intended) Got the machine in 2005 have used it almost every single night ever since. I forgot it once on a business trip and I actually became extremely anxious knowing I didn't have it. Simply because I did not want to go back to feeling the way I felt before. Great video.

After waking me my arms, legs, fingers, toes, all of it was on fire. From what I was told I basically almost did suffocate to death those times. Definitely put things into perspective. I am a bit nervous about a CPAP machine, but I'll have to get used to it. Any tips?

@@Mangajedi no real tips except just use it if you are prescribed one. It will be uncomfortable and very foreign at first. I mean let's be honest, you'll look like Darth Vader and it's certainly not a turn-on for the ladies. But the reality is so much worse if you don't use it. So many people don't tough it out when they first get one and then abandon it, but the benefits outweigh the awkwardness of wearing one. My 2 cents.

I find it absolutely impossible to sleep the night with a CPAP machine. Been trying for 6 months, tried different different masks, sleep positions, ect…so frustrating and about to give up!

I use what’s essentially a TENS machine for your tongue that is supposed to strengthen your tongue so it doesn’t fall back into your throat at night. It’s called exciteOSA. It’s spendy so you’ll definitely need a prescription but I’ve had good luck with it so far.

Try a BiPAP instead. I hated my CPAP and the Dr prescribed me a BiPAP. Much better bc the pressure is not consistent like a CPAP. BiPAP changes pressure as needed on inhale an exhale.

It's pretty fucking scary to think that the days that I wake up feeling good are the nights that i didn't nearly choke to death in my sleep. Definitely need to take care of this.. I wake up to my chest feeling like someone's been sitting on it all night.

The sleep studies are so easy nowadays. The take home kit is super easy and no fuss... just a device on your wrist and a monitor on your fingertip while you sleep in your own bed. If you know you snore, get it done! EDIT: See a doc before you start taping your mouth shut or wearing a jaw strap based on an article you read or something you saw on Amazon. I tried an anti-snoring "fix" and it almost killed me.

I did an all day & all night sleep study a few years ago. I was pretty confident I didn't have apnea, and the test confirmed that. Turns out I have idiopathic hypersomnia, which I'd never heard of previously. Similar to narcolepsy but without cataplexy and hallucinations (thank god - that sounds terrifying). Don't dismiss having a sleep study just because you don't snore or whatever. You can still get answers to why you don't wake up rested and feel crummy most of the time. My life definitely improved once I got medication for it. I'm much more productive now, and I even lost 50lbs, took up vegetable gardening and made a bunch of diet & lifestyle changes. Much easier to do when you feel better. Not beating myself up all day because of how much I'm struggling to do normal everyday stuff or how I dropped the ball/slept through alarms/missed appointments and feel like a worthless loser is the biggest difference. It's way better this way.

I’m a PSGT and definitely recommend everyone get checked for sleep apnea if you are always tired or snore very loudly. Wouldn’t recommend just using any cpap machine go for a sleep study so the machine is calibrated to your specific needs

Hey. Some additional points that are useful to the ones in the video are that bad sleep for a long time can lead to the body adjusting itself to it in a bad way. In my case there was unneeded muscle growth in my mouth and throat walls that compensated for apnea and interruption of breathing. Options you could consider before cpap or any kind of mouthguard for sleep is getting to consult with a proficient doctor, changing habits (smoking is a killer of sleep also excessive weight is), nose and throat surgery (which worked in my case, i fixed my nose and removed excessive tissue from my throat), meditation (mostly breathing exercises), needless to say that exercising is a must (swimming is naturally very good in that it teaches you breathing patterns) and also important is diminishing stress in your life (bad mental health or state of mind transitions into bad sleep). Imo, you should consider options before getting on cpap and try to, if you can, preserve your body ability to regulate itself naturally.

Surgery isn’t a long term fix for everyone though. One sleep doctor told me that lots of guys opt for that option only for them to have to end up on the machine anyways. If you can lose the weight and quit smoking that would be your ultimate goal while using the machine

Shout out to MPMD, I'm starting to think I've had sleep apnea ever since I got sick in 2020, and if it wasn't for the education Derek has put out I would never even suspect it. My ex said my snoring became "weird" after that and even this last weekend someone commented on how odd my snoring sounded. But it's just wild how little the average person knows about it because she pointed it out to me and we all started laughing, but I was the only one who thought "maybe it's because I'm literally suffocating in my sleep".

I've had sleep apnea as a huge boi for years. Never went to get help until I actually lost a job due to sleep problems. I was diagnosed chronic obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP saved my life. Beforehand, Stopped breathing 57x/hr, as long as 3 minutes.

CPAP machine literally saved my life. People that don't have severe apnea have no idea how terrible it is. It's like a torture by sleep deprivation but stretched over months or years. Also, the sleep quality gets way worse as you age in general.

I am quite overweight technically by a lot (270 and 5'9) I do have quite a large amount of muscle but I'm probably like 25-30 bmi if I had to guess. I don't have the crazy stories some of these people, but I always wake up dead as hell. I literally wake up 1.5 hours before work just so I can not be a zombie. This is pretty normal for me, sometimes it doesn't happen but I don't know what is different those days. How could you tell if it was sleep apnea or just being overweight....I literally come home everyday and just lay down or watch TV after work. I'm 24 dude I should not be so tired I need like either 200+mg of caffeine or almost two hours to be awake.

@@payton3938 First off, your BMI is more like 35-40, so it's something you should definitely take seriously. Check your testosterone level, you can order it at many places without a doctor now, if nothing else, just to have a reference point for later. To establish whether you have a sleep apnea, you need to do a sleep study. For that you need to go to a GP, who will probably refer you to a pulmonologist, who will order a sleep study. It's possible that a GP can request it, in my case it was a cardiologist.

Hey thanks brother. I've was diagnosed with moderate apnea a while ago. I had a terrible time with my CPAP trial. I think it was especially hard to adjust as I was quitting smoking weed as well, which messes with your sleep. I'm gonna go get tested again and buy a CPAP and just really work with it. My hope is I can get the relief you describe this time as I am so sick of this problem exacerbating every issue.

I just want to say I appreciate you making this video. Quality sleep is one of the most important things for good mental and physical health. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea early last year and getting a CPAP has literally been life changing. I was severe too, and had 67 events per hour. It took about 2-3 weeks to notice any difference and then a few months to notice dramatic improvements. Beyond the fact that it can be life threatening, there are a ton of negative impacts from sleep apnea. I hope this video, and Post Malone talking about it, will have a tremendous impact in the lives of others.

Great information, sharing is important!! I was diagnosed at 54 with it. Testing has evolved and you no longer need to physically attend a sleep clinic; you can usually bring a machine home and wear it for a month. I had 63+ episodes/hour. I've worn my CPAP religiously for many years now and it has changed my life. Saved my life, really. My husband says he doesn't hear it (forget those "Darth Vader", stories, doesn't sound like that!) and I wear the pillow mask (fits just under the nose). The kit does usually come with both types of masks and I've worn the full mask once (covers nose and mouth), when I was super congested. People need to get over themselves and the "embarrassment of wearing a mask", and be more concerned about the health repercussions if they don't wear one, yet perhaps should be. If you feel you may suffer from sleep apnea, see your GP, have them refer you to a Respiratory Specialist/Doctor and get yourself in the right direction.

100% Great video, def need more people talking about this. Im 36 and have been dealing with osa for 15+ years. I didn't want to get a cpap when i was first diagnosed (young and dumb for lack of better excuse) didnt think it was that bad/severe (lack of understanding) and regret waiting around 5-6+ years to finally get one. I always wonder what my life could have been then and now.

Sleep apnea has taken my best friends dad in high school and now he’s living the worst way you can think of. I struggled as well while overweight, the biggest benchmark I looked for during my weight loss (270 to 160) was the jawline and neck becoming defined because that was my biggest fear. This is something serious and I’m glad you’re bringing it up

Im 244lbs was at 280 how did you loose the weight? Im almost 33 and on trt but still struggling. Also am treating my sleep apnea had 100 or more apenas per hour. Im at .2. Now with adsv a type of cpap.

I remember my mom one night straight up stopped breathing and I thought she just woke up or REM ended until my dog rushed from a dead sleep to waking her up. Made her call right away and it was one of the most intense cases this doctor has worked on. Basically she'd stop breathing for almost a minute at a time and I'd never noticed it because of the distance between rooms and my door is usually shut so smoke doesn't escape in to the house. (I payed off the mortgage and get to live here in a room that is an entire studio apartment and save money not just lazy, too many injuries to move out for both mom and I so we take turns taking care of each other). All this was found because my dog decides she wants to snuggle with me mid blunt lol
