I’ve seen Pros use this sidechain method.. I agree it is cpu heavy but if you’re going for pro sound then it must be the way to go!

I feel like for that genre, it kinda fits because if you use some bass and kick on house track you still want to hear those bass freq even though its sidechained.

q4 sounds significantly more broken in terms of the spectral eq then soothe. I do like the q4 spectral in the low mids, but anything above 800 it just sounds broken and bad. Soothe still has the best sounding spectral algorithm ive heard

​@bigxan1175 agreed ! Not sold on the spectral feature of q4. But the time control of the dynamic mode is neat (but not as good as kirchhoff)... I made a pretty indepth review of q4 (putting under plugin doctor lens and comparing with ozone eq as ) if ever this could be of some interest to you..

similar as it makes space in sidechain mode but soothe is certainly more precise. you could also use a dynamic EQ with sidechain capability

I find that using soothe 2 side-chained always creates a lot of latency in Logic pro, I am hoping to find a solution to this as I miss using Soothe 2...

shocked to say it but i think pro q 4 has a better spectral dynamic eq than soothe 2. Can only see myself using soothe for taming extreme resonances now, for general smoothing though proq4 is so much cleaner. think i might null test and see if soothe produces more artifacts, im expecting so.

@@Chiselchip The biggest change is the "Spectral Dynamics Mode" which, rather than dynamically control an EQ band (which was possible in Pro-Q 3), it dynamically controls resonances within the EQ band, similarly to Soothe. There are other new features unrelated to the tip presented in this video, but you can easily find them in other videos.

I tried soothe 2 on a trial period and it polishes your mixes to the P! I’ve tried baby audio and gulfoss , this just has an immense effect on resonance reduction ! Now I can sidechain ! Definitely will make this investment!! Thanks Streaky!

So it's sidechaining but is using Sooth 2 doing something different than let's say Trackspacer, Fuser or any plugin that's ducking with the kick at the proper frequencies?

Soothe is different beast

Soothe is a dynamic eq so it's a bit different to a traditional compressor, but you can use any dynamic EQ with a sidechain input to achieve similar effects. Soothe is just really good at this particular task.

Trackspacer & Soothe both carve out space in a mix by ducking competing sounds. You set up both in the same way. However Soothe carves space via resonant filtering. Trackspacer carves via EQ. For example if u want a kick to cut through a mix u would duck the competing low frequency sounds. Soothe will do it via filtering manipulation & Trackspacer via EQ manipulation. Tough to say which is better. Both are good. It will vary by song

Another recommendation for a de-res plug, (I have zero connection with them),...is TB Pro Audio's dseg. I use it in much the same way but for the master 2 trick, (all busses side-chained to the vox buss),. I'll give this a try. Seems another good way to clean up sub frequencies still poking through.

I cut all the low frequencies out of stuff I don't need. That's how I mix, and process my stuff to not muddy up the mix

That’s not the best way to go because if u have a bass nd kick playing at the same time and you cut out the low end of the bass it’s gonna lose its whole purpose as a bass, it’s much better to side chain because that way both the kick and bass can shine. And try not to cut low end all the time and use shelving instead you’ll retail alot of the character and get rid of mud.

@@beatsbygsd5994 I meant the rumble.. like 80 down.. 50 down... I do use shelfs sometimes, and side chain sometimes. It just depends on my tone shaping, and how much of what i'd like to shine through, but I not notice I'm always trying to contain the bass as well by cutting. BTW, I wish i had logic pro! I'd be making much better sounding stuff, and exports. Life sucks being poor! You are a lucky guy.

@matthieubarbemusique I already have Soothe 2 and I just bought the Pro Q4 this week. Soothe 2 is in a lane all by itself. It has a different smoothing sound than the Pro Q4. I can hear the difference. I just use them both. They are both valuable tools.

I prefer Soothe 2 and actually prefer Pro q 3 even though I have pro q 4. I prefer giving each plugin separate assigments to focus on, just like prefer using the Fab Filter MB compressor to using the Pro q Dynamic compression, though I"ll use the pro q on occasion.

Yes, u set up Soothe like Trackspacer. Yes, both carve out space in ur mix via ducking. The difference is Soothe carves out space via adjusting resonant filters & Trackspacer carves out space via EQ'ng.

On every channel?) Better just send every needed track on 1 bus and than add soothe on it, just like another for all reverb/delay stuff to manage the background noise floor. And the main point - can soothe lookahead? if it's not, better bounce the kick track, move it a little back and than use this track for sidechain signal, so any compressor(or soothe) will dip down Before kick come in. I am sure, that Streaky nows all of this, just incase someone will lost themself in the process )

An artist can understand soothe and all spectral eq are garbage and not musical. You shouldnt use it on harshness or hiss or any problem. Resault will be a clean but you destroys all of emotions and bells. Just reduce problem with a dynamic eq with narrow bell like fab q3. After 2 years i will say it Gullfos Soothe Pro q4 And every plugin like this are garbage. This is just my opinion.

I agree. It has to be used subtly, if at all, at least in my own music - singer/songwriter/rock/pop. I found that my mastering engineer was wondering why there were small holes in frequencies that normally bring colour, and perhaps some need for treatment along with the sonic personality. Removing Soothe brought back those key nuances to my mixes. I was using it super subtly but it still has become unwanted. I do like ProQ4 but not for Soothe type processing. It is great for a visual fix and perhaps some surgical moves. However, I do prefer analogue style eq's for vibe.
