Well DID the material last or not? Let's ask him and see. We can give it a chance. But yes it does look thin, but I'm willing to see how it did. And if he used stuff that he had for free then I say he had a win anyway. But the price of the commercial ones made like this, they are seriously charging several hundred dollars each for basically 10 dollars of parts. :S

I mean I would not make this hard of a project to get it so nice but it is really possible. I would go with a dremel tool for thin steel and use/make a net inside so the thin metal gets less hot. The top could be thicker and kind of a heater.

You are a dam good DIY guy great ideas well crafted
@davidquirk8097
@davidquirk8097 3 жыл бұрын
Nice idea. Couple of points for the next one, you get more heat out of the stove if you make the smoke 'work'. This means fitting a baffle, parallel to the top of the stove with a downward facing lip on the edge near the door. This increases the residency time of the smoke in the stove allowing more of the wood gas to be burned. Point 2, for good wood fired the air should come in from the side, not underneath. You could remove the mesh you put in the bottom, it's not needed. You want to build up a bed of embers. You may need to put a layer of earth in the bottom of the stove to stop the fire burning through it over time. I really like the idea of a stove build that doesn't need welding. I've built quite a few stoves, some from barrels, some from sheet steel.

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list kzbin.infoUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

Wood-burning stoves are great, but not exactly green. Back when everyone used them, cities like London were covered in a blanket of soot and smog. Very few are used now so not much effect, but “pound for pound” it’s one of the dirtier and destructive heating and cooking methods. And many “developing” areas are pretty much deforested and eroding as people cut down even tiny trees due to the continual need for material to burn. Some charities provide villages with large parabolic solar cookers for cooking, hoping to stem the continual tree loss for cooking fires.

I'm glad you apparently appreciate that the humour was good-natured. I lied of course. I have owned woodstoves and have heated with wood for a couple of decades. In the portable realm I own a couple of gasifier wood stoves intended more for cooking in a pot or boiling up tea or coffee. I am impressed by the effort, and I'm also aware of the cost of those carbide cutters. A lot went into this.

@@cyndiharrington1751 I agree, and in a worst case you may not have access to heavier metal or many tools. You need clean drinking water above everything else and you can definitely boil what you have or find and be good. But I agree if you are just making something now and have the ability to buy heavier metal, you would be able to use this and make a more permanent stove. I used to be the master of making a tent stove out of fifty gallon barrel. Sit it upright, cut the opening for the door about 3 inches down from the top, fill it half full of rocks, put the door hinges on the part I cut out and attach back int hole. Cut stove pipe hole, put on stovepipe and viola, w ood stove made in half an hour that one can cook on and will heat the rocks and keep the tent warm all night from the heat of the rocks. It was too heavy and big to take in a skiff, but this one you make is perfect for traveling around with.

That is really cool, I like to know where you got the glass too. Great video.

Awesome little project, but I'd like to see the tally of all the materials and hardwares and tools and man hours and fuel for driving around collecting it all. I'm an avid diy hobbyist but I also know that the cost adds up quickly. Probably be cheaper to buy a pre built unit.

True, or to get a lightly used factory-made camping stove…they are around for sale pretty regularly. But people often DIY for reasons other than cost savings, like “just for fun” or because you want a very specific item. Or here, there is some pay out for the video and views, which is great.

Exactly, Awakened. Real off grid is using what's on hand. Not 'Tim the Tool Man' Taylor's shop.

Would you mind sharing the link to where you got the glass? Getting custom cut glass is easy enough at a local store, but i find those stainless steel frames around them really nice and would rather buy those 2 items together. Thanks!

Interesting concept. Stainless containers available at scrap yards but do we need the windows? The only spot I see having trouble with is the chimney and surface joint as that is potential for in tent smoke.

👏 Fantastic job!! If it doesn't warp, and it could, you need flat round smooth feet for the inside of a tent or the rods will put a hole through the tent floor...Other than that, 👍👍👍👍👍
