Wonderfully helpful and objective analysis. Your advice to get fitted, then go shop can save most golfers money and frustration. You deserve our thanks.

Appreciate the kind feedback. Possibly the advice that retail stores won't be happy about but in a world where retail cost of equipment has exploded in recent years sometimes it's making the best of a bad situation 👍

A lot of people who buy clubs not have access to fittings. Closest fitter from me is 300 miles away. I only play taylormade or Pxg. So I’ve played them long enough and have many shafts that I can go to range and do my own fitting and I know about the clubs weighting in the head etc. I’ve found that using the LS or more adjustable woods are the easiest to dial in.

Then if you have access to a driving range, a basic launch monitor to get some ball data ($250 Rapsodo ) would allow you to narrow down what clubs would fit you best. For a ~$500 you can get basic club data and really optimize your selections.

Good point But I still play to a 2 handicap so my equipment is pretty dialed in.

I have Mizuno ST-G driver and the titanium 5 fairway wood set at 17” with midsize grip in both. Its bliss and having hit 60 I have moved from a 65g in driver and 75g in the fairway wood to 50g and 60g respectively. We all need to be fitted and checked regularly to ensure we’re getting the best from our clubs. To mis quote the adage, pride causes shocking shots😂

Good and important points. For us in the northern half of the northern hemisphere, the carry matters a lot! in both ends of the season.

Absolutely right and the interesting thing is that this comparison was done at random and I've seen many times that even bigger gains are common 👍

Thanks for explaining this for all to see Jay. My swing coach also told me that at my slow clubhead speed (Driver=90-92MPH), there was no reason for me to carry a 3-W, for the same reasons that you cover here. But your explanation includes a ton more detail. He even busted the myth about me using a 3-W off the tee to "play it safe". With today's forgiving drivers (Ping G425 Max HL in my case), putting one of my really bad swings with a 3 or a D is death. And not a big enough difference in dispersion with decent but marginal or good swings to justify leaving the loss in distance in the bag by using the 3. I sold the 3 W and bought a 7W: my new favorite club.

Being a taller guy with bigger hands I always find that no fitters around me stock shafts or grips for larger grip sizes for using during the fitting process .So when I am at a fitting it never feels rigjt because Im strangling that smaller grip. Very frustrating.

All of this is clearly true, but it also depends where you play. I play a downland course, very windy and ball runs well, so low spin is useful and if you are straight run out works. I tried an Ai Smoke 16.5 degree HL 3 wood, flew beautifully with no wind, into a gale or crosswind, it was a nightmare, now use a 15 degree triple diamond, stiff shaft 3 wood, hasn’t got the flight height, but bores into the wind or crosswind, runs like a sprinter. I swing driver at 95-100 dependent on the day, my fitter couldn’t believe that i hit XStiff triple diamond well. So your point re self fitting is correct, if you use speed alone, to self fit, it doesnt work. I’ve had lessons all my life, low single figures, so compress irons, squeeze fairway woods and hit up on driver, so at 68, i hit clubs my fitter said i would never hit, until he got me on the monitor

I wanted a fitting for a Ping G430 9 wood . I rang up Manchester, Stockport golf clubs, Scottsdale and Royal Birkdale and none of them had one to try . They said Ping don’t provide one 🤷♂️… So I had to buy blind from internet store.

Must admit that even when I was Coaching and Custom Fitting full time I didn't have a 9 wood demo, 7 yes and everything up but 9 woods are still seen as specialist even though they shouldn't be. Problem is to be able to sell enough of them to justify bringing in the extra demo equipment needed for it's fitting. Used to have the same problem with 5 wood then 7 wood and over time it's got better with more golfers buying patterns demanding the change 👍

I bought my 9 wood somewhat blind too. I had demoed a Ping 9 wood and liked it. I had some pro shop credits at my local club and bought it through the club. Limited shaft selection so I chose a shaft similar in weight and flex to my fitted driver, 7 wood and 5 wood. Worked well. I wound up replacing the shaft with the same I use in my other woods. Really no noticeable difference in carry and spin. 9 woods get up high and a lot of spin. I wonder if there's a less sensitivity with those characteristics. My other woods are PXG so there's a minor difference in feel but gapping is spot on for me.

Perfect 👌 the 9 wood choice used to be years ago a common option, then died for quite a while. Thankfully higher lofted woods seem to be making a comeback and that is great news 👍

Me too, in the US. I had a few spare fairway shafts so it wasn't too bad to find a good fit. Love my G430 9W. My buddies hate it, haha.
@Golfing-AddiCt2 ай бұрын
It's a slippery slope isn't it, they realise they aren't getting the distance they should, so they add more loft, but then that messes with their flight patterns and they're missing fairways and greens all over the course.

When will you start doing custom fittings 😭

Being honest it's now an issue with being attached to somewhere with sufficient equipment to use in a demo environment. I was very fortunate previously to be somewhere where the business felt similar to me in that everything should be done to give the client the best fitting experience possible. Facilities like that are around but unfortunately commission based sales rule at present 😕

@@AskGolfNut Any chance you could be the pro at a club with a steady income? I think you would be perfect for such a job, hard working, thorough and detail oriented, focused on using new technology, data and facts to benefit the player, very player oriented, focused on all skill and swing speed levels and ages, truly objective, and conscious of everyone’s pocketbook.
