This was an excellent breakdown! As a lifelong German Football fan, Pauli has always been a likable club I’ve been aware of in passing, but it was really only when my team (Werder Bremen) was relegated that I became truly aware of them. I’ve loved seeing Jojo Eggestein come into his own for this team, as I’ve been astounded with his hard work for the last 8 years. Great to see a Bremen academy graduate have his best season in years!

This reminds me a lot of Fernando Diniz’s principles at Fluminense. Incredibly fluid with really unorthodox positioning in possession with a focus on overloading opponents without much regards to what positions players play or retaining a specific structure. I really like how you explain them, and make clear the difference between a high press and a counter-press. So often teams who counter-press are automatically assumed to be a pressing team, but as you've shown, that's just not true. By mixing a counter-press with a lower defensive block, St. Pauli essentially force the opposition to deal with different rhythms within a game and that's not so common within football right now.

This fluidity and overloading areas is not new. It is what Manchester City have been doing under Pep Guadiola, and what Barcelona have been doing for some years. Had its origin in the total football of the Netherlands back in the day and the ideas of Johan Crijff. Apologies for not being able to spell. The idea of using space and ensuring that every player with the ball has options, and that when defending you basically hound the opposition off the ball is precisely why City have been so good in recent years. What is marvelous is that St Pauli have proven that you don't have to have superstar players to be able to use this style of play effectively. We used to think that only Barcelona could play like that because they were the only ones good enough. However, love St Pauli and so pleased that they are in Bundesliga 1. The guy is a wonderful coach. The future of the game is bright when you see such fantastic young coaches at work. Football really is a thinking mans sport. Great video thanks.

You got it right. But you missed one point. Hürzeler is not alone with this concept. He copied it from an english coach. And Alonso, headcoach of Bayer Leverkusen did the same. And there is a third one, called Hoeness. He managed VfB Stuttgart, a team that nearly had gone down to second league last saison. Why i am telling this ? Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and Stuttgart finished in second place, right before the famous FC Bayern ! I am fan of FC Sankt Pauli and of Hürzeler, but he is not as outstanding as it seems. Sankt Pauli got a new record for winning games without even a draw in 2023. But Levekusen was unbeaten for a complete season, that was seen never before in history of Bundesliga.

He got his football education in Germany playing at various academies. How he identifies is beside the point, the implication being made is that the US youth/coaching/FA system has something to do with his success and they just don't - the US' version of the FA is a collection of mediocrities mired in nepotism and nearly all of their decent players only got that way playing in Europe. A big part of the reason it is that way is the yanks' inability to acknowledge that they aren't good at something, therefore nothing changes, and claiming a coach whose biggest connection with the US is that his parents pulled some teeth there and went back on vacation a few times is a symptom of that silly view. He's no more American than Balogun.
