If they do have them, the shop’s owner isn’t allowing them to use those skills, including the double-needle handle stitching/knotting that any high-level leather worker would use. Yeah, that was my initial reaction. The original bag is handmade and every stitch is handsewn. The restoration process shown here is not the authentic way that the Hermes bags are made, because the restorer re-stitched the bag with a sewing machine. All luxury leather goods are handsewn using a method called 'saddle-stitching' with threads that have been run through by wax. Stitching this way seals every hole and makes them water-tight (from the melted wax) and saddle-stitching ensures that the stitches don't come apart, even if there is a rip. Still ridiculously over-priced, but when you see the way that the bags are hand-made, you can see why they cost more than the average bag. But as you and others have said, the actual materials don't really cost that much, and like other expensive products, you're just paying for the brand name.

Most of the bag is saddle stitched, but parts of it are done by machine. Can’t expect a restorer to go through the saddle stitching process though, the specifics of how to do it the way Hermes does it takes a couple years of training. They did a pretty good job though, one thing i noticed that they didn’t use is rubber paint for the edges. Just regular Angelus leather paint. It’ll pass the distance test, but not the close eye inspection. Still respect the skill though.
@timeisnow98272 жыл бұрын
@@charlieewing1810 that’s a razor knife, not a steak knife Lmao! People in my shop will use scalpels for precision…as long as the blades thin and sharp, and you can preserve the existing holes and not cut the leather, any thin blade will work.

That's what I came here to say. Most high end brands will gladly service the bags they sold and giving them to another workshop could not just mess up the bag but would also result in loss of value. Idk why somebody would take their 10k bag to anyone else than the original manufacturer for repairs.
@speedocowboy2 жыл бұрын
There honestly isn't that much value for such a well worn bag (relatively). The owner maybe thought the savings in time/money (Hermes spa can take 6 months to a year before you get it back) was worth it for a bag they wouldn't resell anyway.

Would like to know addresses where to bring handbags for restoration as well as an idea of their minimum repair fees. I understand that sometimes it is better to save and buy a new bag because they charge a lot for repairs.
@ElBrooklyn12 жыл бұрын
Not sure how an experienced shop fails to recognize a fake bag. The difference in quality is on an entirely different level. It starts with how easily the bag comes apart under the knife. Hermes Hand stitching is properly knotted with double needles. This gives the bag structure and stability, which this bag lacks. So if one were to cut apart an Hermes bag, you wouldn’t see the knife just slipping through, because each hand-knotted stitch would require separate strokes. Also, Hermes does not use plastic inside its handles. And the idea of replacing the finely finished, matching Hermes hardware, including the feet, with some off-the-shelf brass would cause any client of this shop to demand a refund.

Kering / PPR buys its Gucci bags for less than 30 euros from their Chinese supplier. Don't know the shop price, but I guess 500 to 1,000 euros. Excellent profit margins.
@sams30153 жыл бұрын
Yeah Gucci is known to be complete sh** and €500-€1000 is mid range for designer bag. It reminds me of Michael Khors. Just a bunch of logo on canvas. The thing to watch out for with luxury brands is they often have different lines, some are for entry level and usually the stuff full of logos is crap and the other more minimal stuff is better quality I find
@gabrielle16263 жыл бұрын
Gucci bag is not made in china not even the canvas tho .kering is the first luxury company stop using fur and using eco tanned leather even they have new veged leather now on some products.unlike LVMH still increase thier price every season n the quality isnt getting better

Not really, the bag is a great investment. They all go up in value and sometimes double their original price within a few years. It’s no different to a “poor person” buying a $30,000 car when you can get a car for $5,000

10 000$ bag? Looks like a 30$ bag at most No expensiv leather or that so why the cost? Is it a 30$ material but the brand is the rest of the cost for otherwise i can't understand the cost

its a fake version of the bag. the real bag uses actual high quality leather and gold plating on their hardware and they also handcraft every component of the bag and hand stitch every stitch on the bag

This doesn't seem professional. Use new leather piping, instead of painting it. That's a regular degular KNIFE, not a pro tool! There's no gloves on his hands (oils, dirt), nor protection for the bag on that dirty table. He didn't protect the silver latches as he was painting the bag, etc... Yikes.

Water based paint won’t stick to polished metals or slick surfaces(is plastics). If it did i would have to waste money on primers.

@@RylanStorm Deflection doesn't work on ME. I am referring, IMHO, to the sloppy, cheap, dirty, unprofessional way the "restoration" was done! (using a cheap KNIFE?!!). True leather CRAFTSMAN have, and USE, the proper tools. Furthermore, I call into question if that was an authentic Birkin bag: where's it's unique number; plus, the bag has been RUINED because no similar, patented Hermes leather was (obviously not) used, & the bag was PAINTED, not truly leather DYED. Which begs a question: If her Birkin bag is REGISTERED, as they ALL are, why didn't she send it to Paris, or an Hermes- AUTHORIZED American restorer?! Seems "fishy" for an allegedly 10G HAND MADE, CUSTOMIZED bag?!
