Yeah, no I agree with acid, the whole point of the scene was that Peter was not a swordsman, an unready, unaged, and untested prophesied king who was easily dealt with by a seasoned soldier. And the wolf got overconfident and got himself killed by a novice. While we are talking, cinema always has to balance realism with budget and cinematic presentation, so earlier when they whined that Eomer didn't have his helmet strapped down and it was too high, it's left out that A, you need your eyebrows to convey emotion so you can't cover them, and B, he was taking his helmet off in that scene. You can't take movies this seriously. Oh well, off to the next video, 680,393,174,318,123,480 to go and I can say I've watched youtube

6:57 - I agree that that's not the proper way to hold a sword, but I actually like that they did it that way. As the host (quite correctly) observes, Peter looks as though he has never held a sword in his life in this scene, and that is as it should be. This is only the second or third time Peter has ever even drawn his sword, and at this point in the movie he still hasn't had any lessons yet. So, yeah, he should look like he has never used a sword in his life, because for all intents and purposes, he hasn't. I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately didn't give the actor any lessons in swordsmanship before filming this scene in order to make his inexperience as authentic as possible.
@megan5867
@megan5867 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I came for this comment! That's the whole point. He's a kid from 1940's England, so he hasn't really held a sword much. Although I always wondered about the previous book, where they had fully grown up in Narnia, and how much experience he'd had as an adult. Of course it's possible for some of that to fade, I suppose.
@ashleighelizabeth5916

@@megan5867 with respect that scene is from the first movie not the second. The calvary charge is from Prince Caspian but the scene with the wolves is from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I was an extra in the Outlaw King knighting scene, one of the knights, and I was a Scottish soldier in the final battle scene. I was impressed that they managed to fit more than a hundred of us in actual metal for this bit, almost full body mail. I agree about the ventails being missing, especially on the cast members, but overall I thought the attention to detail on the film was done with some decent care (minus Edward II being present at the Battle of Loudon, that messed up the whole logic of the history and the plot lol).

Great video! I adore Toby and Roel as experts for the Insider, they are true prfessionals. Interesting thing about Eomer's introduction is that he's got that helmet so high because that's his first scene in the movie and audience is meant to see his face - as Toby said. However, Karl Urban does put his helmet lower and straps it in later scenes, just watch battles in Helm's Deep and on Pelennor Fields for reference.

07:06 "Pointing a sword at somebody with your arm fully extended..." is the main guard in Destreza, old spanish fencing (with only one hand and facing sideways, that is...) but it's great for this scenario. By doing that you maintain your enemy as far from you as possible. Wolves don't have the ability to take your weapon from you, but they can bite IF they get close.
@TheWabbitSeason
@TheWabbitSeason 3 жыл бұрын
Destreza also uses a much longer blade and a cup hilt to protect the hand in a 1v1 duel. Peter has none of this with that arming sword and standing at long-point. It's great defense in front of you, but sacrifices any quick reaction to the side or rear. But in context of the movie, Peter doesn't know how to fight with a sword.
@JohnDoe-zh6cp
@JohnDoe-zh6cp 3 жыл бұрын
Very different. In Destreza you're using a light one-handed sword with your shoulders more or less parallel with the blade. Holding a longsword with squared shoulders out in front of you actually shortens your reach compared to if you held it with one hand and turned your torso sideways. So not only is he giving up mechanical leverage and tiring himself faster by extending his biceps completely, he's actually shortening his reach.
@TheCrimsonIdol987
@TheCrimsonIdol987 3 жыл бұрын
Extended in the historical manuals doesn't mean you have your elbows locked like Peter's, which is what Toby was criticizing. Long point, which is the guard he's trying to assume, has the point extended out in front of you. Extended, but you're not locking your elbows.
@richmarkov8863
@richmarkov8863 3 жыл бұрын
I was actually going to say fighting styles all over the world have used defensive stances with arms extended and many different styles of swords. Thank you for pointing that out. But also, Peter did not know what he was doing. (And absolutely no-one is going to grab a sword from your hands in a fight. Extending your arm like that would get you killed.) He should have also pointed out that the movies give to much armor to the armies. Armor was expensive and most soldiers didnt have any. You had to be wealthy and/or very important to have armor.

I want to see Toby and Ditch guy (Roel) discuss the usage of the wedge cavalry charge. They seem to disagree on its effectiveness, yet both of them are certainly credible. My own less credible suspicion is that it was used heavily, just not as portrayed in Hollywood. The king or general would be at the point during the initial approach, but once at the distance where he would lower his visor he would slow down and shift position to firmly inside the wedge surrounded by his guards. I also think Hollywood tends to show wedges as being much more narrow than they were historically. I think they were wider so as to maximize the impact.

very good video thumbs up. just two things to mention. 1st: yes a wedge formation can be effective but only if the enemy formation is already broken. charging into a solid formation should either be done in a line where you ride as close together as possible bringing the full kinetik force and the momentum of the whole cavalry at once or even better you dont ride frontal into a solid formation (although there is historical evidence it was done to break the enemies morale). a single man at the point of a wedge formation will just be killed as he gets isolated and attacked from right left and front as he got noone on his side protecting him (even if he penetrates the formation hed be surrounded because the enemy wont break directly). An important person like a king wouldnt lead that formation except the enemy ranks are already breaking and fleeing or he leads them in wedge position to maneuver effictively but during the charge before they crah into the enemy lines the sides close up to the point to form a line in the last moment. 2nd: fire arrows were mostly used in sieges to try to set roofs equipment etc. on fire wich forces possible defenders to extinguish a lot of small fires. And it wasnt as effective as many people think. It was more effective to use normal arrows to make the defenders keep their heads down than hoping that one of 1000 arrows lit sth up. when its a raid against a village with stawroofs its another story but against a medieval city its more effective to keep the firearrows away. In naval warfare fire arrows were far too risky, it sure was done a few times but that was an absolute exception. you have to light them up on your own ship. therefore you need a continous source of fire burning on your own ship...you are more likely to set your own ship on fire than damaging the opponents ship.

Perhaps by naval warfare it means people (on land) shooting at ships, not ship-to-ship combat?
@theoneandonly3435
@theoneandonly3435 2 жыл бұрын
@@josuepereira9782 that would be a defended landing. This mainly happened in modern warfare maybe the most famous example being Omaha Beach. in medieval times enemy forces were more likely to land a bit further away. then they would get into marching or even battle position and then march in direction of their target for example a castle or town. Of course im talking about forces of army strength. A quick raid via ship like the Vikings did would happen of course as close to the target as possible but they also didnt have to take position with a large army. So not only naval warfare means two ships or more fighting each other but also a defended landing like in the movie "Troy" was quite unlikely to happen so i think he meant ship to ship combat.

At 6:58 , the reenactor showed that he did not deal with aggressive animals. T k it is to drive away a dog (or a wolf, i dont know who is there in the film) that the option is quite working, without special training, an animal of this size will most likely not jump on the exposed object. And in principle, fencing experience is not directly transferred here. I used the method in practice against a dog, only with a stick instead of a sword. This is a fairly common situation in our country, since the control of stray animals works very poorly.

Actually every studio always hire one of these consultants before making a TV series or a show. The problem is they never want to go for realism as it will be boring.

The thing with LotR is that that was probably the 5th take and Karl Urban just forgot to put the chin strap on and pull his helmet all the way down. In also pretty sure that Gimlis armor, at least his helmet, was actual metal. Also Peter had never actually held a sword so that's 100% realistic.

10/10 for Army of Darkness. A horror comedy. That's amazing. Nice to see someone behind the scenes knew something about armor.

In other videos of this kind it is said that the wedge formation is debated and the king would never the leading the charge, because he would be most likely dead in a few seconds.

Come on 1 out of 10 for Jorahs armor just for this little flaw? After all his armor looks more realistic then a lot others😅 but great video 👍

Having an armor expert kibitzing the films is great, but there's one thing he needs to remember; all these films are made to be seen by audiences with NO knowledge WHATEVER of how arms and armor actually work! He didn't comment on the fact that, in the wedding scene of First Knight, the armor worn by Arthur, AND his knights, being full plate, is just a few CENTURIES too early

I liked many of the fight scenes in Joan D'ark, stylized, exagerated as it was. It would have been interesting to get more comments on that.

Now I have seen many of this insider reality videos. It is funny how some people get defensive about the movies, when the expert point out what is wrong according to real life knowledge. If I understand this he is judging how the armor or weapons would work no matter the narrative of a movie or tv series

I've watched so many of these that information between experts is starting to contradict each other. For example the wedge formation being effective, and fire arrows being used in naval warfare

I dunno. I've seen some ballistic testing of long bows and they will go through a plate curaiss. Chainmail is designed to protect against slashing weapons, arrows, bolts and pointy swords will not be stopped, hence the padded leather layer underneath. The Romans had chainmail and the Roman Gladius to defeat it.

Dude. Going after Peter for acting like it was his first time holding a sword. Um, it was. 😂. It was also his first Calvary charge/battle. I would say scene is fairly accurate given your comments and his portrayed experience level.

To be fair in Narnia when he was holding the sword like that it was because it was his first time with a sword and he had no idea on how to use it.

With the Narnia scene I think while hes absolutely right about how to properly hold a sword but the movies right about what the character would do. Peter's a ww2 era kid with no real training who's afraid. Hes not acting like a seasoned knight because hes a scared kid.
