I like to look at survival preparation by keeping the three principles in mind as a foundation: Food, water, and the ability to thermal regulate (clothing / shelter). One can then expand on all of those three principles by being more detailed, i.e. for water, add in storage options, procurement methods and filtering. Then take this to the point where you break it down to 24 hours, three days, one week and then indefinitely. But, I agree with Mike and adding in security - - stay strapped.

Heart of Helene devastation here. Thanks to everyone who came to help! My heart has been warmed and humbled. I'm grateful I was able to be as prepared as I am. I used this as an opportunity to pressure test my preps. There were holes for sure, but I was able to help people with food and water on day 1. @@chupacabra304 Outstanding question. My own biggest holes were medical and comms, off the top of my head. I'm lucky. Sanitation is simple. I have a creek and getting buckets of water with which to flush is not a big deal. (Nobody thinks about sanitation. I did the TAT 3 years ago at almost 60 years old. Did it on my F800GS. I spent a good part of the week in and out of cell coverage. I bought a garmin inreach mini and took it with me. My family could follow my tracks daily. I used it way more than I thought I would. Was great to be able to text my wife at night from camp when I was out of cell coverage. Got my bike stuck pretty bad in black dragon wash outside green river Utah. Came within a few minutes of hitting the sos button. I started that morning with 6 liters of water. After spending two hours dragging my 458lb bike out of the ravine I was out of water and feeling the effects of the 101deg heat wave they were having that July. Finally was able to get my recovery strap around a small cedar tree and got it back on the trail. Having that inreach on me was comforting. It’s been part of my edc since then. I even use it from the cockpit of the plane I fly to text my wife. It’s an inexpensive piece of mind.

The “Camp Fire,” that affected paradise is what made me take natural disasters more seriously. I will always remember the sky the day of the fire once it reached paradise…it was apocalyptic; and some of the friends I lost that day because they went back home only to get stuck in Paradise. I now always have a “go bag” ready now even though I live across the country.

Snag 50lb bags of rice from your local Asian market and pack it in mylar bags. Buy beans when they are on sale at the grocery store. Build a pantry. When you find an item you use frequently that's shelf stable and on sale, buy 2 or 3 and don't pull from your extra supply. Eventually you'll have food to last you for weeks, and then months. PSA has so many budget options for security. Piece it out if you need to. Buy your upper receiver this month, your lower assembly the next month, and mags and ammo the next. Train with the cheap stuff and worry about the expensive gear later. There's a lot of other things but....water, security, food in that order unless you or your family has special medical needs. As someone who's been through many major hurricanes like Katrina and host of other smaller ones I would recommend considering a generator that can take mutiple fuel types such as gas/propane bc you can store propane for much longer without it going bad. Also make sure you have as much fresh water as possible, you dont realize how much water you use till you dont have access to it.

North of Kentucky here. Had the ice storm, but in the early 90s, 2 weeks without power on that one. Thankfully, I had a small house with a wood burning fireplace, and it was, of course, cold, so I didn't lose anything that needed to be kept cold. Fast forward to 2011, my hubby and I experienced our first tornado. We managed that as well. The home we live in now we have a wood burning fireplace with an insert and just like I made use of a charcoal grill we have a propane grill (which if that fails we can cook other ways), but we have had straight line winds take out our power for 12 hrs. Which honestly wasn't a big deal to us, but thankfully, we would be alright if we did lose power.

I agree with the whole Montana subject/example. In Boy Scouts, we would train and learn about these types of things. We would have to camp out throughout the year in all types of weather. We would learn to start different types of fires, navigation, shelter, and what to pack and plan. My favorite time is sleeping in snow caves. At the top of the mountain with 4ft of snow, wind blowing. With snow ghosts. It was a good life experience.

Live in southern NM. Don't have to deal with storms like that, but power outages are something I think about. Heat and water are the things that keep me up at night. Slowly been building up water storage capabilities. I'm up to 40 gallons. Food supplies have been growing. Mostly dry goods in mylar bags, but after an accident with the fridge I've learned the importance of a chest freezer that can be connected to a generator, if needed. Only meat that I vacuum seal with ice packs. This really only gets us to about a month, off grid. So I think beyond that, being able to move to a better location with a more resilient community should be our long term goal.

Don't be cavalier about generators and propane when there is no experience to back it up. Please. Facts: a 500 gallon tank cannot legally be filled with more than 400 gallons. You only get 400 gallons to use when it is full; use propane for anything else, and you may find yourself with a quarter of that when you need it for generator use, and if it is a storm coming, your service truck will be too busy to service you. One gallon of gasoline has 88% of the energy of a gallon of diesel. One gallon of propane has 73% of the energy of gasoline. Thus, propane gallons burn up quickly. Most people running a generator do not comprehend how fast they will be able to empty whatever quantity of propane is available. It's only a good resource if it is used wisely and frugally.

First aid teach everyone in your family basic first aid because you might actually become the patient. Oxygen tank. List of contacts in a waterproof bag/container (family/friends/insurance/Red Cross or other community #’s). Solar/Battery operated camping fans. Preparedness/calmness/patience. I’m in FL and I see the most impatient people when power lines are down and the power doesn’t automatically come on after a storm. It took 13 days once to get power (something to think about before moving to FL). Our linemen work hard but they aren’t magicians 😂. 😊

I normally align with Mike and Andy, but our community also needs to focus on younger families as well. Between prices of place to live, taxes and such are hard enough. While a 22kW generator with multiple fuel sources is ideal, everyone needs to start somewhere. A smaller, sub $500 generator can work just as well, it can keep an electric cooler to keep perishables and certain medicines viafarlfor far longer. But if you buy gas in advance, you need store properly and use a stabilizer. Also, some generators are set up to run e85 ethanol based gasoline, though it is harder on engines. These also can be simply modified to run straight ethanol, which you can distill yourself from farm waste, especially from fall corn decorations and leftover pumpkin guts. A biolite stove uses very little wood fuel, but can charge cellphones and similar devices while you cook. You can put high quality survival and first aid manuals on your phone or tablet, and keep the device charged with that stove or a solar charger. A simple biolite stove add on allows you to cook and boil water, which is also a critical need to make clean water. There are cheap and safe small wood buring stoves with chimney kits for warmth, and run on foraged twigs and sticks in a pinch. If you are stranded in your home, clean water is critical and may be hard to come by, so a boiling water distillation kit is less than a hundred dollars and as long as you have fuel, will keep you well supplied. As cheap slingshot can keep a small family fed and their health up in bad situations such as the Western Carolinas are currently. Diet is super critical and a lot of survival foods are super high in sodium which will rob your body of critical hydration. The survival ration packs which is a putty blick that will keep you alive can be mixed with a little clean water and be used as a baby food, though I do not know how this will impact an infant long term. As Andy has said on his podcast before, we need to meet people where they are. A kiddie pool can be used to bathe with minimal water and a solid alcohol scrub of the pool afterward. It be incredibly helpful to see these truly very knowledgeable men tackle broke people survival. I'd like to see them tackle rooftop or apartment gardening and canning. A cheap or used dehydrator can let a family make survival foods like soups atbabfraction of the cost compared to big brand survial rations for pennies. As Sean Evangalista of 30 Seconds Out fame, a friend to Andy and possibly Mike, has said on shirts, stickers and patches, no one is coming, it's up to us - Expect to self rescue. But as these been teach, you have to start where people are at.

Florida Big Bend area here, 3 hurricanes in the past year with power outages from 3-6 days each (80-90 degree heat). A few observations: - generators are great, but not as effective without an interlock switch - dual fuel w/ 50 amp capability are a must - a system to run your home can be done for less than $2k, including the interlock - if you have a camper, keep a separate generator to run it (I use a dual fuel inverter for this task) - If it’s a new generator, follow the break in process and keep extra oil and spark plugs on hand. This maintenance is critical. - If you evacuate your home for a safer structure during the storm, it doesn’t have to be far. Keep a chainsaw in your vehicle to get back home (chainsaw and generator have been the most used items). - Get a Starlink kit, even if it’s just to have on hand

I remember 11 feet of snow on the ground. We checked up on the old people in the neighborhood by looking for smoke from their chimmneys. (Because with single story houses and that much snow, the chimmney was literally the only thing sticking up above the snow. If there was smoke, they still had heat.)

I lived off grid for four years as a single oldish female. The first thing you don’t really need is a generator. I had a stream on my property, a wood stove, an axe and could chop wood really well and you will chop a lot of wood, and a small single burner propane cook top. I also made an off grid shower from a tankless hot water heater. They make all in one units now so just google them. If you get a generator, get the smallest one you can to charge cell phones, run a fan, etc. A large generator should also be an inverter. If you get a small refrigerator, get the next to smallest size because it actually uses less power. They are about four feet high or so. But you really don’t need a generator. The cabin I lived in was hand built out of rocks on the property. Quartz containing rock. I’m not sure what was going on with all that quartz but my trail cameras would pick up things that were not there, like in another dimension or something. If I ran a fan that had a large copper motor, I would hear this weird Appalachian music like from another era. The man who built the cabin had also built a stone structure in the creek to hold milk and other perishables. He built a cistern to gather water from the stream after it had filtered through the sand. Always buy a three in one winter coat that is rated to thirty degrees below the lowest temp where you live. That cabin was so cold it never got above 42 degrees in the winter. The wind coming off the stream felt like a polar vortex. That temperature might not seem cold to some of you but in cold and damp North Georgia, it is freezing!

If you are not mechanically inclined and understand how to work on small engines or at the very least clean the carb and jets.. do not get a gas generator.. it can fail at any point in time even if regularly serviced by a third party. Get a solar generator setup instead.. In Florida here and even though I get my generator out run it and service it every summer in preparation for the hurricane season.. it failed to start for me when I needed it.. took me hours in the dark and in the rain rolling the fuel system apart and cleaning it refueling it to get it running..

Get solar powered outdoor security lights. One thing that’s a sure thing is the sun will come up everyday, therefore, you can charge them during the day outside then use them in your house (every room and space) in place instead of relying on candles or propane lanterns.

Lets face facts. Water, shelter and food. You must have those. Most of the people dying in these disasters did not evacuate. Have very little to nothing other than in their home. And never will have more. You couldn’t pay me to live in Florida or California. Nor Arizona or Nevada or even Texas. Excess Heat or bitter unending cold, no water resources , forest fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods are all tough to prepare for. Lots of people live where these are now issues. Climate change is real. Why that is I don’t care. You need to plan for unprecedented weather events. Industrial accidents too. People live everywhere. You need to know your threat matrix. Prepare for most likely. But evacuation is all you can do against some threats if you want to be sure.

You comment on the generac - the challenge is most of those are powered by natural gas. When power fails, natural gas stops following too. As you summarized shortly thereafter a tri-fuel generator. don't believe the installed generac do tri-fuel. another consideration for installation in a portable unit with a generlink - it is a device the plugs into your outside meter socket and the meter plugs into it. it has a socket on the bottom to allow you to plug a generator directly into the house with wiring in a subpanel etc.

Immediate evac would be sidepiece with complementing defense rifle but how many rounds and what about the remaining defense arms? Some of us would probably need an additional vehicle just for arms and ammo.

Do you think the recommendation to keep your go bag in your house is in case your vehicle is compromised somehow? I’m thinking like a flash flood or other fast acting natural disaster that could affect your vehicle before your house. If you have to take a different vehicle or leave on foot you can still grab your bag on your way out the door but if your car is washed away and your bag was in it now you’ve lost that as well.

Gear ain't gonna save no one. Skills matter. Skills is practice with the knowledge, gear and supplies. Without practice, the gear, the knowledge, the supplies don't mean a thing. I had a conversation with a serious prepper lately, and I asked him how his garden did this year. He didn't have one, but he had seeds. I've been gardening for over a decade, still learning, still gaining skill. Same thing with a generator. What do you run, how long do you need to run it. Can you make the fuel in your vehicle last six weeks running a generator for you home and survival? Go bag ain't nothin if you can't carry it a serious distance. I can say this as a guy that rucks 900 to 1,100 miles a year at 67 years old. You must practice. You have to practice buttoning up the house. You have to practice first aid. Lots of people love to practice shooting, but few practice even the simple skill that will save a lot of money. What skill? Cooking. Yes, I know a prepper that considers cooking opening a mix and following directions.

Let’s be clear, none of this shit or these “operators” ideas are real life. These are fantasy’s from combat vets who don’t have a war to fight anymore, no disrespect. The hurricane that hit us in NC is an example of no matter how prepared it doesn’t mean shit when it gets washed away. If you are in your home and water is coming in you aren’t going to say “let me get my go bag with my .300 blackout and my radio and my Gucci glock” you are just going to grab your family and go to high ground. The minutes or even seconds that you waste is life and death. If you are in Florida and dealing with hurricanes then you should be saving and preparing all year long to leave or stay which ever choice is best and if leaving is the option you should be leaving at least 5 days before it might hit. So in the Florida situation a go bag, rifle, handgun, radio and any other crap these guys want to think you need is fine. You do not need .300 blackout, he has some obsession with it, a simple 16in ar is fine, pull two pins and put it in the bag. I think a capable 4wd is a good idea, mountain floods, wild fires, hurricanes or people blocking the road those are situations you can use that vehicle to escape and I’m not talking about stupid jeeps or stupid diesel trucks, just a good reliable Toyota 4wd suv or truck with good AT tires and some recovery boards if you have space. You can buy a Canik pistol, excellent to secure in the vehicle or in a bag and cheap. Look into department trade in guns as well, have a budget and don’t worry about Gucci crap if it goes bang over and over it will probably be fine. So for our family we have a back in our closet by the front door. That bag has essential gear in it to get out in an emergency, next to the bag is a rifle I built with all the gadgets for like $1500 with the eotech and light. In the bag is medical with 4 tourniquets, a way to purify water plus tablets, a msr little burner with a little mess kit, lots of mountain house meals, emergency blankets, down blanket, socks, hats, gloves, and so much more but not over done or bulky. Just be reasonable and don’t get hype over these guys

No, the best generator is solar generated, not gasoline/diesel Mike. Fuel goes bad and you will also run out of fuel in no time. Stacking fuel is typically very limited for most. I'd say keep the fuel for vehicles to bug out. Run your place on solar and have a smaller gas generator as backup if there is not enough solar. Solar is quiet and inconspicious. Solar batteries are more reliable. It's expensive but that's the best solution, if you can swing it.
