After 1200 vids and nearly 2k subs, you reach the point, "I just do this as a creative release, it makes me feel good!" and if people want to watch great, if not.... who cares? Just do it for your own pleasure first and foremost.

You've done well for yourself in twelve years. My channel is less than a year and I'm looking forward to my first 500 subs. It's been a very tough journey with few or no subscriptions with every upload. It's tougher now than it was twelve years ago.
@jenluv
@jenluv 20 күн бұрын
@Kidzz.y I checked out your channel and I think with a kids' channel it's hard because little kids probably don't know they should subscribe. One thing that's great is that a lot of your videos have more views than you have subscribers which is amazing! I would disagree that it's tougher to grow now than 12 year ago. There were a fraction of people on the platform back then. My husband started an ASMR channel in 2020 and grew to over 100K in less than a year. I think it really depends on your niche. Every audience is different!
@Kidzz.y
@Kidzz.y 20 күн бұрын
@@jenluv, that's so true. I've been around kids, they just watch, catch the fun and move on to the next one 😅. It's always a joy to see and I just don't remember the subs when I'm in those environment because I love kids. It's the busy parents who aren't always around them that does the subs. I'm not really bothered at this point; I've set a one-year target to reach the 1k subs and the required watch hours to get meager returns for my commitment to what I love doing. That would motivate me to create more contents and also work on movie projects. Hopefully, this isn't a wishful target. 😀

@jenluv I pick up what you are saying as a RN and have worked and saw horrors, and experienced them, and family think when I sit down to try to help, even when my own life is misery, they still think I'm doing it for recognition or out of ego. Cause they haven't lived my life or haven't had realities hit yet, ya just raise your hands and say, go get help from someone that's a real Mental Nurse then and laugh to myself. Had a doctor tell me his wife refused to let him treat their kids cause they had to go to a real doctor. Hahaha

Great points! The first one is especially important for KZbinrs just starting out: "Your family and friends don't care that you started a KZbin channel." Learned this lesson earlier this year. I got virtually zero support from friends & family on FB/Insta, and it was demoralizing for a while... UNTIL I had a couple videos go viral and then quickly realized, oh wait... THESE are my peeps! They *get it*. Whether they're existing friends/fam or *new* friends/followers... it's ULTRA important to surround yourself with people who are supportive, encouraging, and generally interested in what you're doing/creating. They're *out there*... you just gotta put yourself out there until they finally see your stuff and connect with your content (and you). It feels great when it happens, but yeah... it can take a whiiiiile. Just keep going!

Now I rarely tell anyone I have a channel unless I'm almost certain they might be interested. I like tip 5 about slowing down to speed up in the future. I tell my guitar students something very similar. If you want to play really fast guitar you have to practice really slowly and carefully. When you practice slowly and carefully it gives you better technique and you learn efficiency of movement and this in turn leads to much quicker speeds.

@@StudioBlackskull Allen is former sports camera man....he is NOT just your average KZbin old fart...YOU and I are.... There are only several types of KZbin channels that are guaranteed to make money, they are; in no particular order: *Being a female content creator and (!) cute; your subject matter is irrelevant, you have a guaranteed audience and the views and the subscribers roll in. *Making KZbin videos on how to make money on KZbin. * Cute animal videos. * Being of a diverse ethnic background and being animated in your video creation; animated meaning use the stereotype, go over the top with the stereotype for your benefit. * Having a fair amount of money already so you can buy the items for review; the cars to fix, etcetera etcetera. The old adage is true; it takes money to make money. If you've been on KZbin for 10 years much like I have you know that this is the truth and there's nothing wrong with pointing it out. On one channel that I used to watch, viewers were addressed as Linda. It was hilarious because the creator wasn't speaking to someone named Linda but to a specific type of person. It made you pay attention and created that connection you're talking about. Another guy calls his viewers Greg, but again he's not talking to just Gregs, he almost makes it sound as if a Greg is some kind of creature. I really enjoyed this video. I'm 46 and just starting a business meant to help writers (mainly self-publishers). It's very daunting, even though I too have a lot of knowledge and experience. I'm happy to see your channel is growing and I totally agree that we always need to think bigger, outside of ourselves. Helping others and building a community in which people have a good time and learn from one another is priceless. I love your setup, too. I personally think it's very important to create a visually balanced background that doesn't distract from the content. You don't want people to get tired watching you. Everything works beautifully behind you and you fit in very well with that polished look and gorgeous blue top. And yes, we do need to take the comments into account. Way too many creators get offended when their viewers make suggestions. You can't please everybody but some of the criticism may be valid and useful. People WILL click off just because you're too loud or you mumble too much, or you touch your hair all the time (I hate when people throw their hair around). Side note: I love Brett Cooper's expresiveness, her personality is her brand, but when Daily Wire replaced her with someone who was copying her voice and gestures, it turned people off real quick. You gotta be authentic, first and foremost.

At 55, a former attorney, I am thinking I want to start a KZbin channel. I originally wanted to be an architect. It's always been about being creative to me. So now I'm chasing being in music somehow. I've developed about 5 different lanes to provide content as I chase this dream. The channel wouldn't be about me progressing in music, but highlighting the paths that others took to get to my goal: Famous people (then and now), Trusting the Process (highlighting how artists progressed in their career), Influences of mine, Discovering new artists and then Quotes and Interviews that inspire me to be more creative....just trying to figure it out. The target audience would be any creative-minded person looking for motivation. I just made myself type that out to sort of put my goal out there.

I needed to hear all this! I started a video podcast a few months ago. I've got 44 episodes, a handful of shorts and 1,565 subscribers. Lately, I've been working on my delivery. Like you, I've done tons of TV segments. I'm a personal finance expert and author, so I thought I didn't need to work on my camera presence. Wrong! I came across like a talking head spewing sound bites, LOL. I'm still working on that and trying to improve my engagement. Your videos have helped me a lot. Thanks for all your tips!

Great advice! I’m about to hit 100k subscribers, but it’s taken me 14 years of inconsistent posting-sometimes skipping entire years (1-2 years at a time). The downside of this approach is that infrequent posting stretches out the learning curve, kills your momentum, and leaves you with a lot of ghost subscribers. These are people who stay subscribed but don’t watch your content, which sends misleading signals to the algorithm and ultimately hurts your video performance.

These are great tips. I have a question: it seems like once my channel monetized fully with ads, my views dropped way off. Is this a real thing? I am baffled because I am not doing anything differently and even the click through rate and watch time will be good, but it doesn't look like KZbin is suggesting my videos to non-subscribers as much once I got ads. Would love to see a video if that is the case on having to rebuild somehow to have YT push videos out again.

One thing that is rarely talked about is the tone and mannerisms creators project into their videos. I suspect one thing that successful channels have in common besides having the ability to *give viewers a worthwhile and unique experience* is some pleasantry to the senses. This is not just a visual medium, but an aural one also, and one that should be respected. I for one, am not going to listen for stay and stay engaged to any particular video that has a creator doing annoying things, acting arrogant, or talking in a voice I don't particularly care for. Like a big pet peeve of mine is power talkers (like a customer service pro). Positivity, down-to-earth speech patterns, no jerky or anxious mannerisms. Be surprised just how many You Tube channels fail on this benchmark. I am a big music lover, maybe that is why sound perception ranks high on my list.

SUGGESTION: put links to your Amazon products in your description. For example, I want to get your phone mount and I've looked in 2 descriptions so far. Could be a win-win :)

Jon, I encourage you to publish more of your videos. The more you do, the better they get. The viewer comments help. Don't worry about trolls, we all have to put up with them, but I have even gotten better because of them.

@@ralphknowsfood I'm not bothered about trolls in the slightest, I'm more critical of myself than anyone else will ever be. Feedback that's constructive is always welcome. I disagree with this post it anyway, that was YT 10yrs ago, it's a very different beast today. #1 cause of failure is lack of relatable story telling, it's a learnable skill but unlike all the other fixes the gurus talk about, this one is down to us as individuals. I call it finding your groove.
@ralphknowsfood

@JonAtLarge Hi Jon. I only mentioned the trolls because my first troll nearly did me in as far as posting. My son clued me in about it being normal and everyone having to put up with them. I can relate to what you're saying about being self-critical. The more videos I've done, the higher the standards I've set for myself. I, too, have scrapped projects or refilmed them because I didn't like some aspect of it.
@JonAtLarge

@@ralphknowsfood I'm used to it in business, you can spend months perfecting a product, that most people are delighted with, then get one clown who says something contrary, so tempting to respond. It's good to keep recording and analysing and always improving, I don't believe 'publish anyway' is right, publish the best ones you can at that moment. Especially as we're researching, directing, presenting, editing and producing all at once as small channels, it's a lot to do and learn.
