Natasha Ednan-Laperouse suffered an allergic reaction to a baguette she’d purchased from a Pret a Manger before catching a flight from London to Nice. Natasha’s parents are now calling for a change in the law after a coroner told an inquest that the baguette’s labelling was inadequate. They join us today to share their heartbreaking story.

If your child suffers severe allergies, bring your own food!! Especially when you are going to be essentially stranded in the air/away from medical treatment! "She knew she was safe with". How?! It wasnt labled so how did she know it was safe?

Updated packaging requirements and disclosure of ingredients should be a worldwide goal. So many products and ingredients are still proprietary or not fully understood by the consumers. Food, beverages, alcohols, health and beauty, pharmaceuticals and home interior items all being included. So very sorry about Natasha. Such a beautiful young lady.

Don't forget about cross-contamination, such as a product without nuts that was processed by machinery that comes into contact with nuts. Labels need to state, 'may also contain....'

I feel sorry for them my condolences. Things should be labeled properly worldwide;however, when you are going places and you have severe allergies, I suggest bring your own food so you are 100% certain that it’s safe especially if you may end up somewhere without cell service or medical care or even if you’re in a busy city. You can’t be too sure nowadays. This isn’t a dig at the deceased or the parents just a suggestion from a person who knows people with allergies.

I thought epipens were 100 perecent effective. Did she need 3?
@luckystone2293
@luckystone2293 3 ай бұрын
Apparently the needles were too short. She had 16mm ones which might have not reached the muscle. Currently 25mm ones are recommended.
@814912
@814912 2 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure epipens don't actually fully stop a reaction. They just slow it down to buy you time to get to hospital. Which, on an aeroplane, wouldn't have been an option for her
@malinia.20
@malinia.20 Ай бұрын
Epi pens are absolutely nowhere near 100 percent effective. That is why you're advised to seek emergency medical care right after you use an epi pen. Sometimes they don't work. Sometimes they work for a while, and then the person has a delayed allergic reaction. Sometimes the epi wears off and the allergic reaction continues. Epi pens don't stop allergic reactions completely. They just give you time to get to an ER/A&E and not die before you get further treatment.
@MayMay-qr1yc
@MayMay-qr1yc Ай бұрын
They're not a cure to a reaction. They help you stabilize until you get to the hospital. Never count on a epi saving your life, though, because it's a device that can malfunction, expire, or be used wrong. Always go to the hospital 100% of time if you have a reaction. ❤

A lady who was also a doctor, just died in Florida from eating food at a Disney restaurant that was supposed to be allergen free. She administered an epipen right after her allergic reaction started, but her reaction was too severe, so she still died.

If there’s no label, I wonder why she didn’t ask the staff about the ingredients. With such severe allergies I would ask. Terribly sad nonetheless.

I’m not sure it didn’t have a label? I believe it did, but the sesame allergen from possible cross contamination wasn’t declared properly. You won’t get a straight answer out of a cashier at Pret on a busy morning in Heathrow airport either. They didn’t make the sandwich and they don’t know.
@NativeWarrior88
@NativeWarrior88 4 ай бұрын
Exactly! Everyone wants the company held responsible but if she was as intelligent and vigilant as her parents claim she was, it begs the question, why wouldnt she ask?
@luckystone2293
@luckystone2293 3 ай бұрын
Let's not point fingers at anyone. I'm sure parents have tortured themselves about it, especially dad. She was excited for the holiday, maybe she had eaten at Pret many times before and she would always see allergens mentioned on the packaging, and she didn't realise there was a loophole in food labeling.
@malinia.20
@malinia.20 Ай бұрын
@@NativeWarrior88 Have you been to Heathrow airport? If so, you know how busy it is. Especially this restaurant. Do you have food allergies? If you do, you would know that food service workers are famous for not knowing the ingredients in the food they serve, and/or not taking the time to find out. They are held to such terrible and exacting quotas and tragically, they aren't paid nearly enough to care about their customers' safety.

Absolutely maddening that possible future face of human rights was murdered by a poisoned baguette. Thats how i feel about it. she was poisoned. might as well been cyanide. a 15 year old girl who was already digging into her field passionately...She looked so much like both of her parents...sorrow doesnt cover this kind of tragedy
