I love that it is explained WHY you do what you do. It helps me know the reasons behind it so that way I don't make a big mistake and end up having to redo something. Other people do the steps but won't tell why you do things a certain way. In a world full of multiple ways of doing things it pays to know why a certain thing is done to avoid issues of doing it another way.

Watching Tom work is like watching a seasoned pilot land a B747 with rain and a low overcast, or watching a mechanic remove and replace a hard to reach starter. It's their day job. They do it so often that it truly does become routine. For us DIYers - it's much more difficult. Partly because we may not have the ability to get all of the tools and jigs used. They can end up costing as much or more as the replacement door slab itself. I am replacing a kitchen to garage door right now. I'll get it done and I'll correct what I mess up as I go along. Good luck and best wishes to all DIYers.

If I make a video like this, the final scene will be something like: "Alright, Danielle, give it a try!" **Starts closing the door, but it jams and won't even close. ** "I think you might need to cut it a little smaller at the top, and it seems like the hinges are not quite at the right angles, or something. I hope you're gonna be able to fix this before dark. I shoulda hired a real carpenter..."

So then how did you determine where the lock set would go on the door so it would go into the strikers on the door jams? I want to replace my doors with more modern ones. You have really done a great job explaining how to do the hinges but not the knobs to be in line with the strikers.
@binkyxz33 жыл бұрын
The knob, cylinder, and striker should all lie on the same horizontal line. Since the old striker is already there, simply close the newly hung door and mark where the center of the striker meets it. The boring fixtures you saw him use will do the rest. The pocket on the striker is much wider than the cylinder; allowing for this fit-up and settling in the house.

is there a benefit to the extra work of replacing the entire frame and getting a prehung door?
@InineV3 жыл бұрын
I imagine it'd be preferred to get a prehung door if there's damage to the original frame (sagging from the house/foundation settling over the years, etc.), or if you want to change the size of the door altogether. The door I need to replace is an awkward 34" wide, not the standard 32 or 36, so I'll probably get a 36" prehung set instead of trying to find another 34" door. This'll be my first attempt at door replacement though, so I could be entirely wrong haha

Does this method seriously work as easily as shown? My concern is that if one hinge placement on the new door is 1/32" out, the hinge halves won't come together cleanly. It's pretty hard to get that kind of precision with pencil marks. Then how do you fix that? You can't move a screw hole over 1/32".
@rbeck3200tb408 жыл бұрын
+Javier Fauxnom It doesnt work this easy. I have had alot of problems lining up the latches and the dead bolt locks with the strike plate on the door frames They NEVER line up perfectly.. If the latches dont line up they will hit the strike plate and it will not close but I have just grinded down the the strike plates a little with a dremmel tool with a stone on it and it will close
@jessegoodson50428 жыл бұрын
This is Goody, To line up the hinge placements from the jamb to the door, place your tape measure at the top inside of the jamb agenst the header measure down to the top of each hinge , then on your door hook your tape to the top of the door with a nickel under the tape end, measure down from the top of the door and mark the measurements on the door the nickel will give you your head margin . To get the right spot on the door so your door is not pinch the door stop measure the little piece of wood on the door where the hinge was on the old door should be around 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch take one of old hinges line it up on the measurements from the top of the door and the mark on the stop side of the door and trace out the hinge. Chisel out the Hinge placements and screw on the hinges.

You are correct. Loosen the screws just about 1/8 or so so the beveled top is not all the way down, get the hinge pins in, then tighten down the screws.

"You can't move a screw hole over 1/32" - 1. drill out hole to 1/4"; 2) shoot wood glue in hole; 3) pound in a 1/4" birch dowel; 4) cut off excess dowel; 5) wait a few minutes and redrill.

Sadly, the industry pushes customers not to use this method anymore to replace doors. Door and window companies now prefer to just rip out frames and install pre-hung doors for more money and somewhat less work. I've talked with 3 door companies and professionals and they all say the same. This is especially true if your slab door doesn't fit the typical 80 X 32 or 36 measurements.
