I could watch these videos everyday. I can remember watching this old house on PBS as a child and learning so much. I love doing carpentry and fixing anything I can get my hands on. These videos make anyone with common sense and some tools able to fix anything in their home. I'm happy these videos started popping up a few months ago. I feel like I'm learning new tricks all over again.

@@thesweattexperience7741Nobody is going to do that when they can just smash the glass. Anybody worried about undetectable entry can easily pick the lock. Somebodh removing and then re-installing a glass door is NOT how you are going to be robbed.

Also, it is characteristic of the vinyl doors and windows that the frame deforms somewhat after securing it to the walls. It makes the doors or windows sliding a little harder.

did you notice the stationary panel was installed on the outside. so the clips holding it are on the outside which means a simple screw driver and I can move the panel and enter the house. the stationary panel should have gone to the inside of the home so those screws aren't accessible outside. I love watching Tommy's videos. Even the pros make mistakes sometimes.
@penelopeboythorn
@penelopeboythorn 7 ай бұрын
The inside handle can protrude from the moving door. The door wouldn't open all the way. If the handle was flush, the door couldn't be closed by that handle if the door was slid all the way. You couldn't reach it. You'd have to use the outside handle to begin to close the sliding door if the sliding door was on the outside. So, the stationary panel is mounted on the outside

Don't over think it. If anyone wanted to get in, there's two giant glass panels they can smash. After that, they can drive a truck inside and out of your house.

It's also about having good quality tools. Construction worker or not. Yes a good crafts person in any trade can almost use any tool and do the job. But as a Tool Junkie there's a big difference in cheap stuff vs middle grade, vs Just the Right Good Quality Tool for the job you are doing. And it's also about how you are using a tool. Everyone has different experience also. It's kind of like Martial arts the more you train the faster and stronger your ability. But if you think about it too hard it becomes complicated.. don't think feel. Let's say you have put in 2 sliding doors but that's all you've done. But a person who works as a professional door installer only does that. That person would be a master at door installation in 2 years or less doing it every day. But imagine if they did it over the next 30 years. Tommy is a contractor so His expertise is Building houses from the ground up and he knows a lot about everything in a house. The point is you could classify him as a Jack of all Trades Master of none. But that would be false. Tommy's ability has gone beyond the physical level because he is able to share and teach it. That is how you know a True Master. No matter what the teacher is teaching. Building, Art work, Martial Arts, Automotive, etc. The point everyone eventually becomes the Master of there own abilities. Unfortunately it is very Western to reach a level of training and stop learning even to the point of being physically unable to perform at any level. But it is When you realize you never stop learning that your ability improves in any and all things you put your mind too. Yes video and editing can happen and make the appearance that something is easier then it actually is. It can make bigger doors smaller and messy rooms look clean in 2 seconds. But the whole point of doing any Work is to experience it. As Work is one of the Ultimate Gifts that God has blessed us with. Friendship also Work should be experienced as it is. And not to be stuck emotionally in yourself about the job. I here many people and sometimes even myself say This work sucks. I wish I could do it faster. However some people gripe and complain so much about the job that it becomes the reason they work not to experience the blessing of it. Therefore they forget the reason why they are doing a job. One too make a better life for themselves. But two to help others build a better life for themselves. Those are the two main reasons in life anyone has too work. So if you must Work do What you Like.. not What pays the most. A very humble trim carpenter once posted a video. And he was suggesting that he held the fastest casing install. You see He was pulling a fast one on his audience. Because people who know him Knows that he builds the casing and trim on the ground and then installs it. So while his introduction to that video was theatrical and entertaining, the main objective of the video was not to gloat and say he was the fastest in the World although at first glance that's what it looked like. His purpose was to point out that building cases and trim on the ground will get you perfect trim every time. Once it's built you set it in the window ,you shoot one nail. And it's installed. Vs holding pieces of trim up and nailing one at a time. Which is normally what a lot of people even some construction workers do because that's the only way they ever tried it. But that's the thing there is a difference between rough ins and framing a house compared to Trim Carpentry and Joinery But it's all abilities. My whole point in writing this is to inspire others to strengthen there own abilities in there own crafts.

No, the fixed panel should always be installed on the outside so you have the option to put a removable security bar behind it, next to the sliding panel, on the inside. I've seen it installed the way you describe a few times, and it's definitely not correct. You could put a security bar on the outside and lock everyone in! The fixed panel should have screws or a bracket on the inside too, and you could always use one-way non removable screws if it doesn't.

Most of you complaining about the door being installed backwards have no idea There are some manufacturer's in the past that put sliding door on the outside, to make them more air-tight. Peachtree was one of the manufacturers who started this trend in the 80s. Most of you are complaining, because you don't know about it and think Tom is a fool to install it backwards.

ThisIsSolution it's television, they don't show you everything first off. And it's just for entertainment not a how to guide. Also the KZbin clip is even cut shorter than the clip on TV you don't know what was cut

Thomas Genders Darwin explained this in his book. Natural selection is awesome. Thins out those who deserve to die. Such as those who would cut in to a wall without checking. We know Tommy did check.

@Roald Shakleton yes its made out of glass but if you look at the video at 7:12 he is installing the L bracket and screws on the outside of the house . Which means if you take out those screws you can remove the entire door from the outside making the lock on the sliding door pointless .

Removing those L brackets easily can enter into the house or no?
@RoastBeefSandwich
@RoastBeefSandwich 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, forget about picking the lock or busting the glass. Just unscrew the L brackets. Enter the house with a Phillips #2 bit. The back panel should be the stationary one, Tommy got it backwards. A very rare miss for him.

Took me a long time to find this comment. Most people were complaining that they didn't show Tommy explaining why he knows there's no wires or pipes in the wall. I brushed that off as "of course he would've checked, but they probably should've mentioned it" then got to the part where the sliding door went in first and thought "cool, we get to see a blooper where he has to switch it around for security" I'm very disappointed in Tommy.

The clip on the outside only keeps door in track. I’ve installed this brand of door and the fixed panel is secured on the inside as well. You could unscrew the L bracket and take it with you but your not getting in the door.

There was a window and a door there previously, so a lintel or header was most likely already there. The fact they they didn't need one suggests that it extended from one side all the way to the other....

The header is up inside the wall above the window and door.
@cdca1973

There was probably a garage door there originally, due to the fact there was an 8' opening in the concrete wall and no electrical outlet under the window. A steel lintel would have already been in place.
