Filing and Sawing Machine?! starts at 11:00
This is an old machine: scrap metal by today's standards, but in a home shop? ... probably still scrap metal, but so far I'm impressed.
Special thanks to Adam of ABOM79. Check him out @ / abom79

I am a German certified tool and die maker. I made my apprenticeship between 1976 and 1979. The first 6 months all we did was base camp training or in other words - filing. I learned to file H7/h7 fits. When you do precision filing you never ever lift the file on the back stroke, you will loose the feel/control of the file on the surface. For deburring I lift as well. So I fully agree. Very good video

My son is a computer security type. Not proficient with tools. In fact, I don't want him to use them (power tools) too much. He's likely to cut off fingers and such, and that would mess up his employment opportunities. When he was young, I tried to get him to learn using power tools, and how to do things for himself, but he was not particularly interested. I told him to either learn how to do things himself, in order to save money, or get an education that would enable him to pay someone to do things for him, or he could do both and have the satisfaction of doing for himself AND saving money while not always having to do so and knowing if someone is trying to rip him off.

I went through a German apprenticeship and first thing you learn is how to use hand tools precisely. We had to file a U channel to dimension. +- .02mm and it had to be flat parallel and perpendicular. It takes most people scraping 3 to get the hand of it. We are taught to never lift on back stroke. Try to saw a straight line or file to general tolerance while lifting. Its impossible! By the way I always start by saw cuts using a triangle file to make a groove for the blade.
@siggyincr7447
@siggyincr7447 6 жыл бұрын
Same here, did my tool & die maker's apprenticeship in Germany and for the first 3 months the only tools I used were files. I was given a rough sawn chunk of cold rolled and went through all the steps to get it flat and square and then features like radii, channels and square holes were added. We didn't have to hold quite that close of a tolerance, but even 0.1mm was a tolerance that a lot of apprentices struggled with. I learned from guys that learned the trade in post-war Germany, when they didn't have many machines left and nearly everything was filed after being given rough shape in the forge. None of them lifted the files.

I bought a filer like that 10 or 15 years ago, but after I filed the 3 things that needed filing, I pretty much had no use for it. Then one Thanksgiving I got an Idea and soon my whole family marched into my shop every thanksgiving to eat their corn on the cob. Was a real time saver. Everything was going great until Gramma Sandy got off center a bit and filled her left sinus to the brim with sweet corn. Took her the biggest part of a year to get it all blown out. Still has trouble with her balance, but I attribute that to all of the bottom shelf Gin that she buys. She wasn't the only one with problems either. It was hell getting the speed just right so a person could breath and eat at the same time. Everyone eventually got tired of it all, and I can't say I miss it much either. Way too much brooming all the corn off the car, ceiling and walls. I still get a kick out of it every once in a while though. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had by seeing how frustrated a cat can get trying to eat catfish off of the thing. By the way, some people call it Maize.

What I wouldn’t have given to have this a week ago. My wonderful boss decided he would revise a drawing of a 10mm thick piece of steel , where it was the shape of a egg, a cam lobe of sorts, there’s a 6mm hole 🕳 in the centre for attaching to the end of a shaft, about 10 centres away is a 5mm hole that in this hole he wants two flats opposing each other that are 4mm wide and a distance of 6mm face to face. What I would have liked to have then one of those new fangled mechanical filer, oh mercy!! I managed to do the job, making an Abour from a piece of tool steel and used slitting 1mm disc to create the teeth = it worked really well but I’ll add the Opus to my list of machinery to look out for, thanks Tony it’s a wonderful pleasure to watch channels like yours with really great content, and showing us how it works with the finish achievable. Not all of us engineers have the availability or money to hire a EDM. Thanks again For Sharing this with us........Phil.

As far as stability, I have no clue what you're talking about. I've used hacksaw blades forwards and backwards, it doesn't matter either way the cutting accuracy should be the same. Are you not holding the front of the hacksaw frame? If you are, work on your muscle memory.

IMO Soapstone is much better than chalk for a file lube. I like a piece of brass for pushing out the bits that stick in the teeth that the file card can't get. You should do a follow up on finding the files happy places on direction and angle of stroke with various cuts and patterns. I also get my files sharpened multiple times (not kidding) ATB, Robin

You want to hear about true love for a machine? At my college theirs this wadkin pp dimension saw which in my opinion is the magnum opus of all table saws but its been thrown in the corner which means you can only get half a sheet of ply on it. But I tell you what I must have the patience of a saint because i'm the only schmuck who uses it! Its even got a sliding table!!!

In my first year of high school, we were taught how to use files. Our teacher had a unique challenge: if someone could file a square hole and plug to just the right tolerances so it fits perfectly - not too tight, not too loose - they'd get an A for both years of his teaching and wouldn't even have to attend class. We all tried, but none of us succeeded. Curious, we asked if anyone had ever pulled it off during his 30+ years of teaching. He shared a story about one student whose dad had a filing machine. The clever student discreetly took the part home, finished it in his dad's shop, and then brought it back. We lived in a close-knit town in Serbia where everyone knows everyone. As it turns out, the teacher knew the student's dad and had been his teacher too. Eventually, he got the student to admit what happened, and while he didn't give him the perks, he still gave him the coveted A.

Im a machinist, not a tool and die guy. In my early days (1980’s) every time we needed an odd sized square hole for something, it would be mill to size, then file out the corners. It took awhile to do a nice job of it. Our files were modified to only cut on one side. So a square file would have two opposite sides with teeth, two opposite sides ground smooth. The better to control what side of the square being cut at any moment. There was no lifting of the file on the backstroke. It was just long smooth level forward strokes, the same backstroke, with reduced pressure.

ABOM79!! That was great and really unexpected. I don't know what to say. Historically, great celebrities do "team" up, so when we get old we can sit in front of the (our own) television (computer) and say, "Oh! That's what's his name from, you know. The movie about the machine thing? No, the other guy. Your thinking of the guys that built the things with lights and stuff. I always liked when they did shows together." You gentlemen are both MASTERS!! What? I should watch the whole video? Ya, I'm @1:11 and who knows what (who) else Tony will "pull out of his sleeve"! Awesome cameo Adam!

I have 2 die filers, both are smaller but when needed, they are just the thing. Just an observation, the machine is designed to file on the DOWN stroke, this makes the hold downs simply there to prevent bounce on the return stroke. While I am retired now, I spent a lifetime in aircraft tooling, jigs and fixtures. We used to lay out then file a lot of templates, you only have a small hole here, try filing 3 to 8 feet "to the line" actually to half the line and you will come to love a die filer. Nice score!

When I was an apprentice, we didn't 'back-file' unless it was a soft metal, so it would keep the file from clogging; especially if it was an old, ratty, oily old brute of a file. Having said that, lifting off on the back stroke could lead to too much radiusing on the edge if trying to cut a flat 45degree chamfer if we didn't pull back...(there's a joke in there somewhere...) Lately(2005) I had to give up on some jewellry making as the filing was just too arduous and finicky with the needle files et.c. I was using. It's obviously way bigger than needed for needle files but I would love to own an Opus Filing and Cutting machine. I'd also like to have the workshop to use it in but I can't have it all my own way. Excellent video and greatly informative. Cheers Tony.

As an apprentice toolmaker in the late 1970's, we used a die filing machine to add draft to our press tool dies.The file had to be set square to the table using the 4 set screws at the top of the file. We never, ever used a square file for a square hole always a three-square file. The computer doesn't recognise that word, three sides of file for filing a square hole because square files aren't exactly 90 degrees at each corner. It ain't broaching! As to lifting on the back stroke. It makes little difference to the life of the file, it can pull the pins out and it does irritate the foreman. A win, win, win in my book.

According to Nicholson's 1928 Magnum Opus (!) "File Filosophy" (yikes) p17, machine file teeth are quite a different shape to hand file teeth. But far from having to do with the backstroke problem, (which is not mentioned in the entire work, as far as I can see) the reason given is that when a file is new, it is (or was, back then) important not to press too hard; you need to wait until the cutting edges are slightly less sharp, or you will ruin the file. Machine file teeth are shaped (presumably) more robustly, as pressing hard is the name of the game. I personally don't care about the backstroke thing unless the material I'm filing is nearly as hard as the file. In this case I am careful to press VERY hard on the forward stroke, which needs to be slow, and lift on the return stroke. It's perhaps worth noting that power hacksaws generally lift on the return stroke. But I have one which does not, and it's noticeable that it is more prone to chatter on the forwards stroke than "proper" machines.
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, I got that wrong: the "Filosophy" treatise DOES say "The pressure on the file should be relieved during the back stroke", and repeats the recommendation for lathe filing and for draw filing.
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 5 жыл бұрын
On further reflection : The main situation which prompted me to avoid dragging on the return stroke, whether filing or hacksawing, was stainless steel (or any alloy with a high nickel content) with its tendency to harden right up when the tool rubs, taking the sharp edge off instantly. Most homeshop guys seem to mistake the resulting heating (a *symptom* of a blunt tool) for the *cause* of the hardening. Stainless steel does NOT harden when heated: it gets hot as a result of trying to cut it a) with a blunt tool, and b) when it's hard, requiring more cutting force and hence energy and hence heat. (It took me a while; one problem with being around engineering for a lifetime is you form strong views and intuitions, but towards the end start to forget why you did. Which is dangerous, because things change. For instance it used to be routine to avoid tapping blind holes, but with modern spiral flute taps, and a tapping head, or a machine with accurate and reliable auto-reverse on reaching a set depth, it's a doddle - but many old-timers will not do it)

When i was an apprentice (blacksmith) we learned about 2 different type of files, well the cut of them, single cut and cross cut, singles was designed for finish ( and learning how to file) due to its lack of cutting at a backstroke and cheaper price, crosscuts cuts in both strokes.
