Hi everyone! In this video I am going to tell you about such a rare-earth metal as rhodium which we quite often don’t notice even when it’s right before our eyes. In the periodic table rhodium can be found in group 9 between cobalt and iridium. Moreover this element is a member of the platinum group because chemical properties of all the 6 elements belonging to it are very similar. That is why they are often found together in ores in earth’s crust. However, just like other platanoides, rhodium is very scarce making up only 0.0002 parts per million

Ex-jeweller here. Just a small correction on the information regarding rhodium plating for anyone that is interested. We almost never rhodium plate silver (the only time we do, is when specifically asked to by the customer, and they are charged accordingly too) as it would make the pieces prohibitively expensive for the value of the metal. We pretty much exclusively use rhodium plating on white gold alloys to help keep it's lustre, as 14ct w/g alloys and above have a very grey appearance, even when polished. Also, replating a piece is so expensive because we have to remove EVERY trace of rhodium, smoothe and polish the piece, isolate where plating is needed, and then plating it in $1,000(aud)/Lt solution. If any bit of rhodium was missed in the initial removal process, it will cause a cloudy bloom on the piece, and you need to start all over again from step one. And if your solution becomes contaminated in any way...you have to buy a new bottle, as it will just cause flawed platings otherwise.

For the hand warmer, the Rh catalyst, along with the other catalytic materia, reacts with the vapor of the fuel. So instead of buring in a flame, it merely reacts with the catalyst to produce minor combustion. Like a catalytic converter where the co1 passes over the catalyst and it's transformed unto c02 as an oxigen is added to the carbon. Much like reacting hydrogen with platinum.

Aa a jeweler, I can say that most sterling silver jewelry isnt coated with Rh, unless it's hallmarked as such or during the creation of agentium silver (has other names in industry) which gives it a higher resistance to corrosion. I'm not sure of the hallmark laws in Russia, but in the US silver has to be hallmarked if It's made of other metals. Such as sterling hallmark (92.5). Rh is typically mixed with gold to make white gold and is hallmarked as such. Love your videos, just wanted to put that out there as a friendly heads up.

You rightly remember that silver metal blackens over time by forming sulfur derivatives. The zinc metal reacted with silver sulphide, and the cooks of the old days put the blackened ladles, forks, knives and spoons on a gutter plate and plunged them into the tap. I did it again yesterday and in less than one night the silver metal had found its complexion as a young girl! And as this regenerated electrolytic metal is free of impurities favoring chemical attack, cutlery stays clean for a long time!

Nice when you have the lab set up, funds, and most importantly the knowledge. Filming reactions is not easy. The risks, exposure, and effort would intimidate all but the most dedicated. This is not a university supported thing here. Some people just like sharing knowledge, exposing hungry minds to the real world of science. Compare these videos to the religitard ramblings and assertions coming from a money grubbing minister making threats to those who don't send him money. Большое спасибо!

Did not know rhodium was this rare thus discovered on earth what can do that platinum cannot. Too brittle naturally coats silver? or added? and palladium as platinum already do this catalytic converters, too rare to make sense for uses that we can already get through the other 5 platinum group elements. I would like to see (learn) what it is doing or not compared at the same time as the other 5 elements. Thank you, you and this channel make me learn/think and that is not an easy task. Russia is the second largest producer of rhodium in the world (behind South Africa). Russia is also the second largest producer of platinum and gold. And Russia is the LARGEST producer of palladium and the fourth largest producer of silver. No other country in the world is in the top 5 of all of those five metals, except Russia.

@PlatinumRatio
@PlatinumRatio 5 жыл бұрын
No. You are wrong. It's inert. Only other metals will be attacked and it is affected much more easily than gold. My 1kg .999 ingot from 20 years back is still perfect. The .999 granules I made by melting and pouring some of it, have some colour, but very, very little to none. Any trace element will do it. In this case, it's coloured by metals from the crucible from previous 925+ silver melts, so it's next to nothing - like 1:1000/95. Even the elements in the water bucket it was poured into will make a difference, so the granules are mostly perfectly white after 15 years in the open. It hasn't oxidised like you would expect from regular copper / silver 925 sterling silver. The video DEFINATELY showed sterling silver spoons (that were not plated). The rest of the 'silver' shown was low carat cheap gold jewellery, alloyed with low grade alloys and probably undercarat. I've been melting and making jewellery for 35 years. I can look at a metal and tell what alloys are in it. I can tell within a second if it was, forged or stamped, and when it was last annealed and how it has been stored, plus how old and in some cases where it was made. We all can. It's like a cook who looks at a dish.

The tarnish is actually the result of a chemical reaction between the silver and sulfur-containing substances in the air. The silver is actually combining with sulfur and forming silver sulfide. Silver sulfide is black. When a thin coating of silver sulfide forms on the surface of silver, it darkens the silver. That’s what we call ‘tarnish.’

Wow, you have solid Rhodium. If you pass this metal chunk generation to generation, one day your family will be one of the last on Earth to have Rhodium. Rhodium needs HCl, yes. If you have an ICP-MS, and you do not use HCl, your Au, Ir, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, etc. will "stick." These metals also stick on my Platinum cones. This metal, Rhodium, is the MOST important metal for Catalysis. It has the most favorable energetic arrangement, and this can be verified using "Isolobal analogies."
