3:35 Thom had the hidden syncopation of Videotape worked out even here, back in 2005. See his foot tapping the real downbeats in double-time; it's audible if you listen close.
@andrewlarking74923 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure in an interview I read that it was Jonny that was obsessed with the syncopation. Thom imagined it as a different song, but Jonny and I think Phil stayed in the studio and stripped everything out to what it finally became. Possibly read that in the king of gear site.
@traxus123 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlarking7492 Thom has a firm grasp of the syncopation here, two years before the album's release and a year before Bonnaroo, so I'm going to venture a guess that he spawned the idea and the rest of the band loved it since they're all music nerds.
@robocelot Жыл бұрын
Even better -- he's not just foot tapping, he using the piano sustain pedal in a very subtle way, in addition to reinforcing the downbeats. What's interesting is this recording dates from the period before they dropped the double time section in _Videotape_, so this version without the rest of the band actually sounds more like the double time-less version that eventually appeared on _In Rainbows_.

I think what’s more interesting in how he cleverly just puts two eighth notes at the start to start the syncopation.

the rhythms and chords, are there so well and intensely lived in his work that everything is creating a continued new transgressive horizon, or becoming, or alignment, always more and more pluridimensional organics from raw flesh and bone, through (dis)harmonies and voicings and wording, every time I come back I always get immersed and feel a part of it, and then leave and let go, all this impact flowing through all arteries and veins, and every cell becomes more alive and is living a/the more and more perfect circle but each time a little different, how well "everything is not in its right place", and that's ok, water is still wet, but if in each time a different water you'll always feel living through his art in expressing emotions and keep you in a kind of hipnotic moment or something, anyway, circle is perfect (or not!) 💯🍉🍓🍒🍅🍎🍉

I don’t think Thom’s piano playing is recognized enough. Such a unique style and phrasing to the way he plays, very driven by left hand chord movement. I can almost always recognize a song he’s written before he even starts singing.
@jayshah17943 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know how to read music. So he memorizes what to play and plays them in his own way. Super cool!
@TheHabiat3 жыл бұрын
honestly. i think he's a bad singer and piano player. don't get me wrong. i really like radiohead and his solo stuff, but if this would be a unknown artist, he would be shredded to bits by reviewers (if they would).
@SimeonGaniushin-w5y3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHabiat i see what you mean by that, but there is a strict difference between uniquity and mediocrity. Thom might not be able to play Chaikovsky concerto no 2, or reach all the notes of “Time to say goodbye” but nobody can deliver a performance of Radiohead and Thom Yorke’s music as mindblowing as Thom himself.
@weirdofromspace28283 жыл бұрын
@@TheHabiat I can see what you mean by “bad piano player” (although I don’t think you can call it bad in particular), cause even Chris Martin from Coldplay can play much more difficult pieces, but singer? What makes you think that? He has very beautiful strong voice, I enjoy his live performances and I wouldn’t like Radiohead so much if it wasn’t about his voice, his range is also pretty high. “Bones” is very hard song to sing, for example, and Exit Music is known for its beautiful climax. It isn’t mediocre. I’m just curious why would you think that.
