Thomann and Couesnon Flugelhorns with a Lotus mouthpiece DEMO

I haven’t had my FH-900J out in a while and I play it alongside a 1971 Couesnon that was previously owned by the late Alan Rubin using a new Lotus Trumpet FL3XLB mouthpiece.

Really hard to tell them apart, both sound great to me. I was able to borrow an FH-900J from a friend a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. Definitely got the itch to get one for myself.

ya I have heard from many people, even other horn companies, that this Flugel is really great... hey for $400 how can you really go wrong? That said, I don't know what it's longevity might be, but I've had mine over a year now and have had no issues at all...

Mi piace molto il bocchino Ray Farr "Diamond" - www.rayfarrflugels.com/diamond-mouthpiece e sono anche molto convenienti. Detto questo, secondo la mia esperienza, anche il bocchino fornito con il flicorno 900J è molto bello e utilizzabile. Avere una vasta collezione di bocchini è fantastico, ma alla fine ne uso solo alcuni delle centinaia che ho, quindi quello con cui viene fornito andrà bene e ci ho suonato per molti mesi quando ho ricevuto questo corno per la prima volta. Pretty nice sound on the Thomann! You have a great tone! Is the horn any lighter or heavier than the more expensive one? I’m looking at Thomann French horns and wondered if you had any advice before purchasing one.

So the only negative thing I can say about this Thomann is that it just "feels" perhaps "cheaper" than the Schilke but the fact of the matter is that it IS cheaper and a LOT cheaper... for reference, the Schilke is a touch over $3,000.00 USD and the Thomann was a touch over $400.00 USD lol I mean that is a huge difference. I have been very happy with this horn, used it on recordings and it still works just as it did day one and has not had any service. This particular model is a little heavier than some of the others that I have, but it's not anything that would deter me from buying it. The big extenders on the bottom I'd say are more for look than anything else as they are completely hollow so they are not really weighting the valves but it does make for a comfortable hold. As for a French Horn, I'd assume they are much more expensive, actually I have looked at getting one myself, but would need to find a right handed model so that I don't have to train my "other" had to play it lol I can only say that I have had a very good experience with this Thomann and would definitely buy another one !! :) Thanks for the comment.

Oh and a great flugely trumpet is a Buescher Super Aristocrat w nickel bell 462 bore. Found one from 1960 that looks near new. Love those soft fast valves.

ciao Michael sto guardando tutti i tuoi video e né sono rimasto affascinato sia nel modo di suonare e nella allegria che trasmetti volevo cortesemente chiederti un consiglio ho 67 anni e sono tre anni che cerco di suonare la tromba ma vorrei comprarmi un flicorno ma sono indeciso tra un thomann 900j ho un vecchio flicorno Mahillon che mi anno proposto alla cifra di 500 euro aspettando un tu consiglio buona giornata e buona musica

Grazie per il tuo commento. Ho cercato le corna Mahillon e sono anche molto belle. Non ne ho giocato uno, ma ho anche un Couesnon del 1971 ed è una bellezza anche a quell'età... quindi immagino che anche questo sarebbe molto carino. Immagino che tu non possa provare queste corna prima di acquistare l'orlo in quanto potrebbe essere forse il modo migliore per decidere cosa funziona meglio per te. Ho acquistato molti strumenti nel corso degli anni, ho tenuto quelli che mi hanno ispirato o che "hanno funzionato" per me e ho venduto gli altri che non hanno funzionato. Forse non è possibile per tutti, ma è quello che ho fatto :)

Nice Playing Garot. tell me, does the Lotus mouthpiece really feel the way they say it does? Adam Rapa gives a good sales pitch for his mouthpiece but I trust sales pitches very little these days. LOL!

well lol I have to say that everyone's experience is subjective for sure. I like this mouthpiece quite a bit, it's really diffused to my ears. I have the 3XL, so extra deep cup and it's made out of bronze so that is also a "strange" variable for me, as I have never had anything made of that before in a mouthpiece. The thing with Adam Rapa is, I have been a follower of his for a number of years, and the guy can play literally ANYTHING like a master so this probably sounds strange to hear, but I don't really give his opinion any weight at all as I personally am nowhere near him in skill so what he can derive from a mouthpiece or a horn I will probably not ever notice or experience. So with all that said, I think it's a very nice mouthpiece, has some unique character, but in the end is not the "end all be all" for me, that said, no mouthpiece really is for me.. which is why i have so many of them lol In regular rotation for me is a Bach 2FL, Dennis Wick 4BFL, Ray Farr Diamond and #1 is the SoundFresh SoundFreak FL1... not sure that really helped !! :)

I never knew that Thomann horns were "a thing" till I heard you play yours -- you sound really good on it! Yes, they're from China, but I just checked and their prices remain VERY LOW -- 1/2 of what Trent now charges for the ACB doubler's flugel and I wonder if there are significant differences between the two? You're a horn aficionado so you know that some of the great jazz trumpeters - at one point in their careers - played the Olds Ambassador, a "student horn." But, that could be because Zig Kanstul was the Olds shop manager at that time, and he built some great horns in his time. So, one year after posting this video, and likely a few more flugels in your hands, how does the Thomann compare to the flugels you have purchased since? I'm just wondering if it has held its magic when going up against some big guns.

Great comment... so honestly, the horn is still just as good today as it was when I first got it. You are also correct in that I have picked up several "new" horns since and despite those horns being classified as the pinnacle of professionalism, they are not so much better that you would never play the Thomann again. I will say that what has changed is that if I were to play out or being a traveling musician, I would for certain take the Thomann with me over a $3K horn for obvious financial reasons but simply because in that context, it plays really well. I would, with the options that I have now, play one of those $3K horns on a recording over the Thomann, simply because, "why not?"

È strano che tu lo dica, mia moglie e mia figlia saranno in Italia all'inizio del prossimo anno :) Penso che il Thomann sia uno strumento eccezionale per il suo valore, detto che puoi dire al 100% la differenza tra la "sensazione" di quello strumento e quella di uno Schilke 1040, ma quella tromba costa quasi $ 4.000,00 quindi spero che ci sia una differenza significativa lì. Ho preso il corno Thoman per "tornare a" suonare il flicorno senza investire molto, quindi per me non era una grande preoccupazione se fosse uno strumento terribile dato che era molto economico. Risulta essere un corno dal suono molto gradevole, quindi lo uso spesso.

In questo video sto usando la Lotus 3FL-B. La "B" denota un nucleo in bronzo anziché in ottone tradizionale. Ciò conferisce al suono un tono molto più diffuso e morbido, ma secondo la mia esperienza è un sacrificio per il registro più alto poiché le note si estinguono sopra il Sol acuto. Penso che questo sia un ottimo portavoce per le ballate ma non molto altro. Ho anche diversi pezzi di Denis Wick, inclusa la 4BFL, ma preferisco la 4FL con la coppa a "V" super profonda, sacrificando ancora una volta il registro superiore per un tono molto più morbido e "soffice".

qualcosa da considerare che ho riscontrato nel mio viaggio è che quando la mia estensione è migliorata sulla mia tromba, tutto è diventato ancora più semplice, indipendentemente dal bocchino, quando voglio tornare al flicorno, anche con bocchini molto profondi come il Wick FL. Un altro pezzo davvero carino che ho trovato e anche molto conveniente è stato il bocchino Ray Farr Diamond. È un po' il meglio di entrambi i mondi, è piuttosto dolce ma anche molto chiaro più in alto...

The Thomann uses the standard (Yamaha) taper. That size is by far the most common across many horns.

Your sound is fantastic Great job. Do you like Benge flugels? I used to own 50 trumpets and 5 flugels lol. Should have kept my frost gold Selmer Concept TT. Went back to guitar the last 5 years so coming back to horn now Just got a new ( shop demo from Dillon) Jupiter 1100 for 750. Great deal! Ever heard of Tottle mp’s for flugel? Have one in gold. Incredible and about a .610 dia cup. Giardinelli 11 is great too but fave is the gold GR 62.5 Legends has a heavy top one now called Smoke. Check it out. Derek is a friend of mine.
