One thing worth noting is that for years I used Remo although earlier on the coating used to chip off and they were notorious for getting them to seat evenly. So I started using evans G1, etc. after about a 5 year hiatus I bought some Remo ambassadors for my micro kit, well what a surprise! Remo seems to have changed its collar design and the coating feels less aggressive. They tune up absolutely easily and sound perfect and really bring the drum to life. Evens have a very brittle plastic material and too much attack to the sound.

Love the back to back comparison. Great snare sound/tuning by the way. Remo Ambassador is my no.1 - crisp & clear. Lets the drum do the talking.

A lot of things people don’t consider is mixing brands drumheads on your kit. There’s nothing wrong with putting an Evans G2 on top of a Remo CS and so on. Not all of us are famous and sponsored lol. Whatever you prefer to get your kit to sound good to you and your audience is always best.

I use mostly Remo and some Evans. Some Evans EC heads and other controlled sound are great for a specific sound. Usually I go for clean open snare drum sounds so I use mostly Remo Ambassadors and occasionally Evans G1s. Tom Toms always get Remo Emperors clear or coated. Remo Powerstroke for bass.

On your snare, the Remo Power X sounds awesome. On my Yamaha Live Oak Snare, the Remo Powerstroke 77 gives me goose bumps.

Thanks for the video, great comparison! Nice playing too. I love how Evans seat on the head, but the Remo’s sound better to me. Coated CS & P3 👍🏼

I use standard coated 10mil, mainly ambassador because it’s easy to add dampening later to achieve the more focused sound that I really like, and gives more flexibility for different shows. For this type of head, I find that Evans has a bright tone, Remo a warm tone and I very much like the dark tone of Aquarian that has the thicker, rougher coating which is also nice for louder brush work.

comparison video is a little unfair, cause its all the very dead evans heads displayed here, facing remo cs and ambassador open sound. Im playing an evans power center reverse dot and at least as good as the remo cs, most of the times much better build quality.

@@simongrossjohann yea I've played many Evans heads the only one I'd ever buy again would be the HD DRY, which is great. I think their tom heads are very good, just the snares don't compare to Remos imo.

@@simongrossjohannagreed! Power center reverse dot is my go to, as well as the ST dry and Uv2. Recently switched my Tom’s to the UV2s a couple weeks ago and haven’t looked back. My drums are so much more powerful and dynamic and consistent. It’s funny too because normally I hate coated heads lol. I think what makes the UV2 so unique is that special UV treated coating that’s almost a hybrid between coated and clear. So you get the best of both worlds. My experience with remo over the years has never been very good. Only about maybe 25 percent of the time do I get a good remo. I don’t know what’s been going on over there recently but I’ve bought several remos in the last couple years where the collars are out of balance; and don’t sit in the drum evenly, so I have to force the head on there, and my bearing edges aren’t out of round either so I know that’s not the problem. And the heads tend to slip out of tune far quicker. Particularly the snare. Where have to retune one of the lugs every couple songs. And also in my experience the coating doesn’t last anywhere near as long the coating on Evans heads do. That being said, even though I’m a die hard Evans guy, I always use the hazy ambassador on the snare side for all of my snares. It’s simply the best. Way better than the Evans snare side heads by a mile.

Agree but I guess Evans is more focused in rock and metal which require a more controlled sound. Remo has a bigger target from jazz to pop and metal, hence a wider choice of sounds.

Thanks for the showcase. The Ambassador, and Aq Texture Coated responded best to your playing including buzz rolls, and different sounds from different strokes. At least on this drum. There are then various external muffling tools you can apply if you need less response. I tend to be partial to single ply heads due to this, but there is no hard and fast rule - depends on your snare drum and what you’re doing today with it.

Lot of different sounds. And the choice of a drum head depends on many factors. In my personal experience, as a hard rock drummer, I think that today the market is too busy and the drummers are so confused...everything is much more simple in the real world. Pick up a good quality snare, don't waste tons of money. 14 x 5,5/6 works for everything, learn to tune it. Remo Ambassador, lot of practice, good band members. That's all, 99.9% of the masterpieces of music in history were made in this way.

I’ve used both Remos and Evans in the past - right now I have Remo Pinstripes on all the tom-toms and the bass, with an Evans EC Reverse Dot on my Ludwig Supralite steel snare and an Evans G1 on my Sonor maple snare. Will be switching to a Remo Powerstroke on the steel snare and a Remo Ambassador coated on the maple snare the next time I change. I also have a Ludwig Weather Master head that I might use on the steel snare at some point. And I want to get a Ludwig Silver Dot head (made by Remo, I think) for my Black Beauty at some point. These brands have slightly differing approaches to their specialized heads i.e., Remo CS and Evans EC with their reverse dots and invisible dots and all that stuff. So there is probably no ‘best brand’ but overall I’ve found that Remo heads hold their tuning better and always sound great but my drum teacher would disagree - he’s a staunch Evans G1/UV1 fan.

Certain heads on certain drums sound better to me, regardless if it’s Remo or Evans. The only heads I have never been able to sound right to my ears are the frosted Evans heads, be it the EC2 on toms or EC edge control on snares. I have tried them on a few different types of metal and wood made drums and just never sounded right to me. It’s probably my lack of ability to tune them correctly. They sound good in video demonstrations and I know people that really like them.

Hearing with the phone speakers I can hear just tiny differences in the pitch, the "warmth" of the tone and that some of them are more "dingy" that others. Maybe whatever you're using to hear this is cheating on you, but still I don't think the differences are that big as people try to imply about skins. All in all there are so many factors affectin the sound - shells, sticks, point of the sticks, technique, the player themself...
