The cork grip on version 1 was a cigar grip, really awful, no ergonomics, front 2” of cork un-usable unless you hold it pointer-style. Copying the Sage snubnose isn’t good, that grip isn’t much better (Sage snubnose is 6 1/2” and too short for a 9 ft rod, should be 7”). The grip to copy is the current one on the Orvis, which was specifically designed to compete with Sage snubnose. The Orvis grip has full 7” of cork, with significant bump in the middle to better support the palm. The rest of the Avantt 1 was very good. I wish these manufacturers (and rod reviewers) would spend more effort on cork grip ergonomics, it’s not discussed enough. But thanks Ben for the review, I still think many of these new versions happen too often and/or miss most improvements that should be made.
