Joe, the source that this YTP is using is the 4-D Special Bubbling Boilers. It came around during the production of either Season 19 or 20, so BWBA didn't exist around that time.

You're correct the side rods even in real life move the same way as the models do. The wheels would jam if they moved parallel to each other in real life. So yes the way the CGI animation animated them was inaccurate. The model's were actually accurate to that of a real steam engine's side rods

To back up your issue with the coupling rods moving at the same time. Yes that has always been wrong in the CGI series. Steam engine coupling rods are supposed to be a quarter of a turn to the other so that you never get a dead spot in the cylinders.

Realistically, if one side rod is pointing down, the other must pointing forward, for maximum performance of the steam Pistons to work properly with out any problems. Especially for an E2 engine! So I am not surprise if you annoyed at CGI Thomas Side rods are parallel to each other cuz that’s unrealistic for E2 to have parallel side rods.

As a huge fan of steam locomotives, I can confirm that your pet peeve, Joe, is completely valid. Side rods of a steam locomotive should not be parallel to each other on each side. On a normal steam locomotive, the side rods on one side of the locomotive are exactly 90 degrees off from the other side rods of the other side of the engine, often referred to as a “quarter turn”. This is so the locomotive doesn’t lose steaming power when it’s pistons ( which attach to the rods via main rods or a crank axle) complete one half cycle and need to return to the starting position, as the pistons basically feed off of the movement of each other. Now, because Thomas’ side rods are parallel to each other, this means that he is going to lose steam power very quickly because both pistons are in sinc, which means that one can’t use the turning power of the other to complete its cycle and begin the process again. And it is because of this that Thomas will soon prove himself to be a very useless engine. Seriously, don’t know how the fat controller hasn’t scrapped him yet because of his problems.
