Around 1980 headed north there was a pull off just short of this bridge. My girlfriend and I stopped and found a trail leading to under the bridge. They were repairing/painting the bridge and had laid out planks underneath across the support system. We ventured out about a third of the way ( as far as the planks went) and this was not a good idea. It was very unnerving once we got out there. Going out onto planks took all your concentration this bridge is very high, but when stopping and contemplating the situation it was spooky. We managed and fortunately I did not become a part of the story.

@@MattCookOregon I didn't even think about that. I love the history of the places you go to, man made or not. I actually found your channel because I wanted to show my husband the Independent mine buildings over in Prineville-again man-made. Too funny. I am an avid hiker so I enjoy nature too:)

Impressive indeed! What's more impressive is the effort to get to good views, not withstanding the parking lot access. I'd bet the restoration in 2017 costs more than the original bridge. Nice paint color. I wonder who choose it? State of Oregon probably has some regulation colors for bridges. Smart dog not wanting to go down steep slope to the beach below. What goes down must come up. Nice trip, thank you. Keep the bridges coming?

So I drove over this bridge on my way to California last month. I didn't have time to make stops, but as I crossed over that chasm, I noticed how high up I was and literally wondered about the bridge below me. Then this video appeared. 😆 Super convenient, thanks Matt!

I love the bridge, we have one the same shape geologically but arch truss bridge and is only 145 feet tall. a tiny creek at the bottom and they have a board walk down mostly steps.. I didn't want to anger you so please check this out it is safe and very educational I just didn't want you to think I was trying to one up you, Wiki the Mackinac Bridge I promise you'll want to see it in person and you just take the most direct route to the bridge US-2 , or an airplane it's about 2000 miles maybe a little less but the west leg of US-2 ends at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge on I-75.

@@MattCookOregon A nice drive up to Anacortes avoiding I-5, via Port Townsend and the ferry to Bainbridge Island. I should have written Deception Pass Bridges, built in two sections. As with the Thomas Creek Bridge, you zip over before you get a good look around. It's more pedestrian friendly if you want to get a good view, but Washington wants money to park at the south end. Worth going that way if you head up to the Islands again, even just to stay off the freeway.
