Thomas Dolby - Blinded By Science (Mini-LP) [1982]

Blinded by Science was a successful 1982 EP by new wave/synth pop artist Thomas Dolby, made up of extended 12" single versions of songs from the 1982 album The Golden Age of Wireless. Four of the recordings had previously been released as two separate 12" remix discs in the UK -- "She Blinded Me With Science" with "One of Our Submarines," and "Windpower" with "Flying North" (these two discs were also released as 7" singles containing their shorter versions). "Airwaves" is the full-length UK album version since the US version of The Golden Age of Wireless contained the shorter UK single version.

Finally, the version of "She Blinded me with Science" that has the closing drum sequence. I used to have this, and drives me nuts that all the other versions cut that off.

Have you ever heard the extended version of airwaves that cuts over to a few other pop songs of the time? Its just a few seconds but important in my head. Lol. I had that version as a kid and it drives me crazy that I can't find it... One of the songs was high school confidential and another was something harder with a bass guitar... only like 2 seconds long but gone forever it seems.

I'm pretty sure what happened was the first copies of The Golden Age Of Wireless didn't contain either She Blinded Me With Science or One Of My Submarines and Capitol wanted to put them on the album. Since Thomas didn't want any of the songs on the original album scratched, the compromise was that they put out some alternate versions, generally shorter, to squeeze them onto the album. The single of She Blinded Me absolutely had the drum outro and that was widely available. I think the real big win with this mini-LP is that it's the only long version of Submarines, I think. And that's the real masterpiece here, IMO.

It was with this EP that I discovered Thomas Dolby. Then I bought "The Golden Age of Wireless", and then learned that there was another LP,, slightly different, which was the first pressing, and bought this one too. I used to joke by saying that Thomas Dolby was a genius by releasing 3 records with just a little more material to produce one album, as my friends told me I was borderline obsessed ! But I was an instant fan, and I love all three records, I love "The Wreck of the Fairchild", both versions of "Radio Silence", but specially, I love the versions on this EP. The instrumental beginning of "One of our Submarines" sets an ambiance for the whole track, the version of "Windpower" is also my favorite one, so is the "Flying North" one, also with great ambiances. I never regretted buying those three records !

Thank you for posting this! Bigtime nostalgia listening to this classic! It is March 1983 in my head and the spring thaw is warming my fifteen year old mind as I hear these great songs on this EP. I owned this EP on cassette tape and played while I looked at "Heavy Metal" magazines with all their cool sci-fi artwork.

Awesome EP by Mr. Dolby! The beat to 'Flying North' bears a close resemblance to 'U.T' by YMO from their BGM album, released in 1981. I wonder if Dolby was inspired by that track, although it may have been a case of him simply creating a similar groove using a delay effect with a drum machine. It is likely that he was aware of their music, because he later collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto on the excellent 'Field Work'. Both incredible artists who continue to inspire musicians today. If you're a fan of Thomas Dolby, you should definitely check out YMO. Groundbreaking stuff.

It wasn't good then, and it sure hasn't aged well. I had a ticket for a cancelled concert with OMD (which they didn't call themselves yet) in Copenhagen in 1981, and I had to wait until Feb. 2020 to watch them - my last gig in 22 months due to Covid. No concerts in 2021, which was the first time since 1977...🤔

Wonderful! I have this EP, along with Golden Age (the one with the more interesting and "dark" cover with the robed figure in a cathedral-type setting). Funny how bands hit a few years of excellence and then never manage to recapture that energy and musical genius. "Ate My Buick" has a few good songs, but SOOOO much more commercial, and Flat Earth is well...................flat! Definitely this album is among the TOP of the boom in 80's new wave - a very interesting and diverse genre of music that I was weaned on!!! Peace! Stay safe n sane everyone.
