The Golden Age of Wireless is one of my favorite records of all time. It, in part, made me want to become a musician. I was 14 & it sounded so different-very English & also unapologetically synthetic!! Thank you for inspiring me with science, Mr. Dolby.

Outstanding. In 24 hours he prepared for and performed this highly complex song all by himself, including the vocals. That's a musician for you.

No. “Cars” by Gary Numan or “Whip It” by Devo or “Don’t You Want Me” by Human League.
@LuckyFlesh2 жыл бұрын
@@AntwhaleNearfar Yeah, but "Whip it" basically ended DEVO. The record company, the radio stations and the fair weather "fans" all wanted another "Whip It" and DEVO just wanted to go back to being DEVO. Once they did go back to being DEVO and "New Traditionalists" failed to have another "Whip-it", they were written off as "One Hot Wonders". Sad, as IMHO, "Through being cool", "Love Without Anger" and especially "Beautiful World" are all far better songs than "Whipt it".
@edsmith6504 Жыл бұрын
@@AntwhaleNearfar I swear that the Cars 45 on the jukebox at out local bowling alley go worn out it was played so much. Devo was almost too far out there. We made fun of it more than anything.

Always loved Europa, far more than Blinded. Early Thomas Dolby was top of his Musical game. Personal favorite was I Scare Myself. I remember the Golden Age of Wireless tour, still one of the best concerts I ever saw

I was so lucky to get to see Thomas in concert in 1987. It was and still is one of the best concerts I ever saw and I saw some amazing concerts in the 60"s,70's,80's and 90's. I got to see most of the big acts in those era's. One of the best things was how acrobatic he was, he did this somersault off of the back of the bass player that still seems fantastical. Plus the music was outstanding. All of his albums still get regularly played in my house. This was very cool to see him recreate a couple of his great hits.

Most people don't realize how freaking talented Mr. Dolby was and still is. As a producer, arranger and just a very original musical artist. Golden Age of Wireless is, of course, seminal but so many of his other albums are genius as well plus all of the other tracks, scores and other work he has done. Check Astronauts and Heretics if you haven't before.

One of the things I love about this is that he didn't do it on the laptop. Mr Thomas Dolby was one of the people that used the just functioning electronics as instruments (yes, there were people before, but Thomas was someone that embraced them).

Plugins were ruined for me the instant they were put into clouds and sign-in walls owned by the distributors. The most effective way to kill inspiration is being unable to re-open a project because you’ve forgotten the password to Roland Cloud/Arturia whatever, because you haven’t used in a week or two and the license wants to confirm itself.

A true 80's electronic don
@edsmith6504 Жыл бұрын
Back in the 80's, my gang all thought that synth music wasn't truly 'artistic' unless it was made by the human hand touching an instrument in say, a rock band. Well, what did a bunch of teens in their prime in the 80's know about anything, right? Looking back on synth music made the way that he displays, does take talent. Nowadays, as a geezer of the 80's, Dolby mentions how everything is done on a computer. Imho, I don't see computerized music as taking much talent at all to make. However, in the next 40 years after this observation, I will again probably change my opinion about it. But alas, I will probably be gone by then. Opinions change, and so do tastes.

TMDR is my musical hero and that will never change! As for the Roland... I have Roland GW-8 which is a piece of crap - never got any answer from the Technical Support because the sequencer programming had many many bugs and they never fixed that. Roland in the 1980s and in the 21st century definitively is not the same Roland.
