When he learns his ex is pregnant at the end of the film, Paul Giamatti's performance is so powerful but also so simple and understated. It might be my favorite piece of acting ever. He conveys so much in a few silent seconds.

Love that "you don't understand my plight" line. Walks away like he nailed it. Absolutely no self awareness. And Church was the guy for the job haha. Also love it when Giamattis character finally flips out at him on the golf course. Great misdirection with the fuckin old golf guys interrupting the thing we'd been waiting for. Also, miles running back to the car being chased by a huge naked guy: one of the most hilarious shots ever

Thomas Haden Church’s performance, while not as obviously profound as Paul Giamatti’s, was absolute perfection. I love Sideways so much. Especially having grown up in California, and much of my family owning farms in the Central Valley, Sideways is like comfort food to me. Only some of us very fortunate folks know the magical respite that comes from stopping at a Hwy 101 diner between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara whilst on a family road trip. Perhaps there is nothing better.

Why didn't they make a sequel?????
@deplorabled16955 жыл бұрын
Sequels often spoil the original. Hard to top this one. But I reckon a 10 years on sequel could work well. Heck they are both so loveable and frustratingly bad at the same time.

@@deplorabled1695 I just watched it and thought there could be material for a sequel. Imagine the plot where the both of them go on a vacation to Italy and France for the wine stuff and bump into stuff along the way.
@damiena3414 жыл бұрын
@@Baghuul Actually there could be another two sequels to complete the trilogy. Sideways was written by Rex Pickett as a novel originally and he has since written two sequels "Vertical" and "Sideways 3 Chile". Hopefully they get adapted to the screen by Alexander Payne or someone else who is suitable. www.goodreads.com/book/show/10158327-vertical, www.goodreads.com/book/show/23552568-sideways-3-chile?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=50voCnTfXA&rank=1

Sequel would more than likely not work. The comedy / road trip aspect of Sideways was only one part of a great film. The more substantial part was the idea that these characters were at a fork in the road of life ( early middle age) and in the case of Miles, a portrayal of how he finally gives up his facade and moves on from his ex wife. A one dimensional comedy sequel about two guys in their 60s would need more to.it.

I can't express what this movie did for me
@ShannonDukes-tm6he8 ай бұрын
I was in a shit job, health declining, and went to the movie with coworker Bill. Where are you Bill? I'm same age as Paul actually he's older by a couple years. I remember asking the wine guy at the store in Yuma AZ, does the sideways movie give honest depiction of what is good wine. I don't remember what he said. Doesnt matter. I watch this movie over and over because this happened at a time in my life when I needed this movie and the Miles character. The innocence of that time is long gone but I still feel it and I wish I had it back. But I know It can't come back so I watch the movie and remember the past. I remember watching American splendor when it first came out and thinking giamatti intrigues me. I would consider him my first love of the silver screen. I know giamatti wasn't the only reason why sideways worked. Virginia's character describing her love of wine with her legs over the arm of the chair and her voice on answering machine at the end of the movie is just unbelievable. I don't know why it works and I've only provided simple thoughts and words to try to describe it. I grew up in the 80s and watched and re-watched all the John Hughes movies. Sideways is just on another level and even though I've used language to try to describe it it's not sufficient.

What did his character mean “you’ll never understand my plight?” We never really hear what he meant by that…
@andrewiangillies Жыл бұрын
I believe his plight is that he feels trapped, dissatisfied, but is compelled to seek something better, even if the search screws up what is pretty decent in his life. He knows his character flaws, understands they are irreparable, and that he is stuck with them.
