Here I walk through some of the artistic and social transitions that mark the change from the Victorian Period (1837-1901) to the Modernist Period (ca. 1890-1950) in the United Kingdom, and how these changes affect literature and art. Thomas Hardy is my main concern, and I spend some time on Oscar Wilde as well.

Superb presentation. I’ve adored both Hardy and Wilde’s works since the 1980s, as a schoolboy. I would heartily recommend Orwell’s essay on Hardy. Marvelous piece. Regarding Wilde,..I’ve always been enamoured with ‘ The Ballad of Reading Gaol ‘, and, ‘ The Soul of Man Under Socialism ‘ ( doubtlessly to have been excoriated by Rand, if she were either aware of it ot read it….I’ve always been convinced that she was not a particularly widely read woman at all )….

Good lecture. I grew up in a out of town area of what was Hardy's imaginary Wessex. I loved in his books as a teen. Was introduced by my mother who always said there were two sides to hardy, his early upbeat days and his later morbid and dark writing...

This is so fascinating! To me at least… This is exactly what I am currently focusing on with my PhD… Thank you for this! We are actually reading Tess right now (for my readings in 19th-century literature course) and I am writing my final paper on the "ache of modernism" in the text…

Rewatching today, and I realized I forgot to tell you how much I appreciate the intro that you dub your “lameness.” The lantern and the pose are perfect! 😂

Love Hardy. Enjoyed the lecture. But Wessex predated the Norman Conquest by several centuries.

Should have taken more preparation. Less attractive.

I always feel I should have prepared more! But in my defense, I'm confident that I could not be less attractive. Thanks for the feedback!
