One of the most basic mistakes in interpreting Hobbes (and other social contract theorists) is to interpret the state of nature as a previous point in history, to interpret it literally, instead of interpreting it as a myth to explain human nature, something which logically precedes the state rather than temporally. It is a mistake you seem to be making as well and it is your most basic mistake in reading Hobbes.
