Thomas J Price on ‘Moments Contained’

Go behind the scenes with British artist Thomas J Price who is unveiling a new 12ft sculpture titled ‘Moments Contained’ at this year’s Art Basel Unlimited.
For almost two decades, Thomas J Price has sought to dismantle the power structures propagated by traditional sculpture, prompting his viewers to question who society deems worthy of a monument. Using traditional materials and innovative digital sculpting techniques to create profoundly radical and highly original sculptures, Price inverts societal expectations and assumptions.
‘Moments Contained’ (2022) returns to the same fictional character Price created for his widely celebrated sculpture ‘Reaching Out’ (2020), reconfiguring the subject in a new scale and pose and highlighting subtle shifts in presentation and perception that resonate throughout his practice. In ‘Moments Contained,’ Price has created an exceptional monument that reassesses the history and legacy of statuary.

Yesterday I spent 10 minutes near the sculpture and it's fascination how (mainly black) people interact with it. Middle age women photographing each other in front of it, whole families taking selfies, a group of adolescent boys looking at it and touching her buttocks.

He opened his explanation my saying people are going to see themselves reflected while observing this massive sculpture, but how, this is a black( African) mixed isn’t anything that white, Turkish, white Islamic, Jewish or white hispanic/ Latin can see themselves on this colossal sculpture, the actual sculpture because it’s colossal height is a typical example of power, power over the people the society; is like this artist want to control has the power over the society and the people

Seems to me that a statue thats represents all of humanity is an impossible task. I am grateful that the landscape of art is slowly emancipating. Progress is much needed in the world of art.

@@realmofthesenses Rotterdam, unfortunately has, after it was bombarded by the nazi s, but also earlier than that, the inclination to embrace ugliness posing as relevant modern art, costing a lot of money but often not loved by most of the people. An example is the throw away architecture the city built and already replacing it or having the idiotic gutz to claim its place in history as a quintessential piece of art.The city obsessively wants to be modern but copies Americain cities whereas the pre war Rotterdam had an authentique look.

The criticism is imho not about race or colour, set aside the usual mediocre racism statements, reading loads of comments its not about that at all. Where do you live? Hundreds means nothing to what the population is in total. Again something is shoved down people troats just to provoke, ignoring THEIR tastes and view on what is beneficiairy to the location , considering we have this widely appreciated new entrance to our city , the new central central station.
