A fabulously beautiful performance! I really love this and Tallis was obviously a genius of his day to be able to compose this in his head, so to speak. I only discovered this piece a short time ago thanks to the King's Singers but it's really growing on me every time I hear it and wish I could hear it live one day.

Thank you for taking us back to the roots of Western musical culture : the praise of God. This music comes to it's full unfolding in the setting of Gothic architecture within which it was originally played. I had the fortune of this sublime experience in the formative years of my musical formation.

I really like the lower key - a tone or so lower than most performances. Much easier on the ear. The thing is already stacked with fundamentals and overtones that create a sometimes overwhelming cluster of pitch content; but hearing it in this key really clarifies it for me.

In this key - G - it's sung by SATBarB. A tone higher in A, it's better for SSATB.

I absolutely love this performance! I'd love to see them live! Is there somewhere I could find an explanation for the musically ignorant on the organization of this piece? It is so complex and rich. Constantly changing. It seems to hinge on the sopranos but I can't figure out how they interact. I assume there is one per chorus? Maybe I'm naive but it seems to me to be one of the best of western culture.

A good starting point is Wikipedia: "The motet is laid out for eight choirs of five voices (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass)." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spem_in_alium fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spem_in_alium

Paul, if you're still interested in this piece, back in May, Stile Antico put together one of those coronavirus-lockdown video performances where the singers all sing their parts at home and the individual voices all get edited together. They laid out the video so that each singer is in a separate little box: the boxes are arranged in eight columns of five voices, and the boxes appear and disappear as the voices sing. It really helps you see how the piece is put together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5fRdpWtmLGkZqc

my recommendation: don't sing spem in alium if you can't count indeed - unfortunately, the soprano in choir 5 (not pictured when she comes in) starts one beat too early (at 1:27) which makes the entire piece fall apart until 1:50 when the soprano of choir 6 takes over :-(... nobody is perfect for sure but too bad that a high profile choir like gaechinger cantorey is not able to perform this piece right being broadcasted live...

Yes, that was a mini-not-quite-disaster. But those things happen in concert sometimes, even to the very best groups. (I am a little surprised, though, that Rademann, the Cantorey, and SWR were willing to post this online.)

The choir sings without much confidence and the conductor does not help. He just beats time and stands too far away from them. The whole performance just lumbers along. The Tallis Scholars and the best but if you can get hold of David Wulstan's performance made in the early 70's with the Clerkes of Oxenford grab it. Prof. Wulstan knew about Tudor church music better than anyone.

I am not impressed with this performance, they are not listening to each other... entire verse is like a canon, but it seems to confusing, and the colour of each vocal section are not compatible with each other... the crescendo and decrescendo are badly accentuated on certain parts, there is no imitations of old instruments, some passages are conceived like you are listening to an ensemble, not to a choir...
