I'm 76 years old. On a keto diet and intermittent fasting. In one year I lost 65 lbs. My muscle mass increased significantly. Got off diabetes medicine. Number dropped from ~250 to ~110. Lost man boobs. Pants size 42 to 34. And on and on. Studies are generalized, not specific. May work for an industry, but not for an individual. Have a good day.

@Violet Fem don't feel guilty! Love and respect yourself, don't punish yourself! I used to be over 500 pounds and I didn't get as fit as I am by punishment. Yes I worked hard. Just don't starve yourself to meet anyone else's standard of beauty. You should practice fasting because it makes you feel good and gives you health benefits. I like eating 3 meals a day, starting with a big breakfast to a smaller lunch and then just lean protein low fat dinner. At least 4-5 hours between meals. About once a week or so I'll do a 24hr fast. You need plenty of nutrition to build strength and muscle. Keep training and take good care of yourself! Wishing you all the success towards your goals!

I’m so thankful that you are out there catching these reports and presenting the facts to counter these negative messages! I don’t think “they” are attacking IF-it’s the keto diet (& IF is part of that life style) that is at the center of the attack!! More and more people are adopting this lifestyle and it’s impacting so many other diet programs plus the sugar industry…so a lot of $$ behind conducting studies to bring down the keto lifestyle!! Thank you Thomas!!

Serendipitous timing. Your content as always seems to coincide with my process. I've been intermittent fasting low carb for 4 months with the primary aim to reduce adipose tissue and reduce inflammatory markers. My inflammatory markers are still very high in particular CRP however I've lost 80 lb. Hemoglobin a1c of 4.9. sky high LDL. All other blood markers are fantastic. Very insulin sensitive at only eight. I've started running and cycling and my leg strength has increased to levels I haven't seen in 15 years. However eating keto high fat was really rough for me and frankly I found Mediterranean / other forms of low carb as effective if not more effective. However I think I need to continue to ramp up my protein consumption given all the additional training I'm doing. Fantastic stuff.

I have been a low carber 12 years now. It has worked great on many levels. Weight, health, bloodwork, etc. Would never return to the low fat, high fibre starvation diet that got me fat. Low fat hell. I had my first child in 1982. Lost 30 pounds just having her. Right afterwards I had an apron of skin which hung to my knees. Cried when I saw it. I had a 23 inch waist when I got pregnant and no one warned me how big the change would be. Likely worse because I was following the low fat food pyramid. The death diet. The skin over years went up some, but never great. When I went low carb the skin improved a lot more, but if I leaned over in front of a mirror I still had a lot of lose hanging skin. About a 7 inch drop. Also lose skin over the body from losing weight. Knees, back of arms, face, neck, etc. I am also old, which also effects skin. Can't change that. I started intermittent time limited fasting last summer. Just a couple of days a week. Did not want to lose weight, but skin. Still have a hang leaning over, but it is at least 2 inches shorter. Maybe a bit more. My arms and above my knees are also looking better. And my neck is also a bit better. All round I am pleased with the results and plan to keep it up. It is really easy to do and does give results.

I'll tell you what the "problem" is with intermittent fasting! In a phrase, "snacking control"! I people are in control of their snacking, a huge industry will simply collapse! Consumerism is driven by advertising. The marketers are betting they can "persuade" people to desire their snack products--and they're everywhere! If they can't stimulate that desire, they fail...

Then i go to the kitchen and bake me some chicken breast and 45 minutes later i eat steak, eggs, brocoli or cauiliflower or saurkraut, with some nutricional yeast. 30 minutes after that i put a whole lemon, water, some fresh garlic, a piece of ginger, some green juice stuff with phytonutricions in the blender mix the stuff and take some extra Vitamin D3, codliver oil capsules, and ther traceminerals inclusive electrolites. before bed i take a glass of water with ACV. I am doing this now for 2 years and fasting atleast 22 hours. I gained muscle mass and lost fat. I am down 2 sizes of pants. I am 186CM tall and i weigh arround 92KG feeling awesome. A large part of strength is neurological. Many endurance athletes lift solely for strength because they don't want the weight and bulk of big muscles. In simple terms, strength is trained by lifting very heavy for no more than 5 reps but not to failure with 2 or more minutes of recovery and a lower amount of sets but performed nearly everyday. Hypertrophy training on the other hand is 8-20 reps very close to failure, less time between sets and more sets and performed 2-3 times a week.

I took up IF approx. 1 year ago. It took about 4 months to start to see a difference but that was mainly due to diet. Once I started “sniffing” at KETO, the lbs began to melt off. I’m a cyclist and wanted to drop pounds for climbing. I’ve dropped 20lbs to date and weigh what I did in high school. It works if that is your goal, but it takes discipline, but not insane amounts of it. I’m living proof.

The biggest problem with dieting in general is that people misunderstand the Second Law of Thermodynamics' relation to it. Yes, burning more than you consume will result in weight loss, but the other half of the law is that all spontaneous processes have an activation energy. In the case of burning fat, the one thing that raises the activation energy of it is high insulin. Once you stop having high insulin, then the familiar half of the law takes hold. Otherwise, the only thermodynamically favorable process of getting energy would be burning muscle via conversion to glucose.

I went and read the pub. To me it reinforces that fasting can be great for overall health, especially for severely overweight people. Loss of fat and reduction is inflammation and related lipid improvements totally outweighs any muscle loss. Once you’re talking about fit people wanting to get extremely fit, the calculus gets more complicated and nuanced, but for the person who knows they’ve been ignoring their health, fasting is almost too good to be true.

How does/would fasting, and/or eating in a calorie deficit for specific periods of time to increase fat loss affect Leptin, IGF, and Testosterone levels of someone who is on TRT and taking exogenous Testosterone Cypionate (.125 ml per week subcutaneously) because their body stopped producing Testosterone naturally? Would their T levels, etc go down with calorie reduction just the same as someone with natural Testosterone production? Or would the fact that they're receiving a steady, consistent dose/amount of Testosterone (maintenance levels only, NOT "steroidal levels) offset the negative effects of too much/often of a calorie deficit?

Biggest problem with IF awareness to the broader population is it's free. In other words there's no money in it and sadly that's how the modern world works. 😔

It's very difficult eating a lot on keto whilst fasting - it's a task in keeping calories at maintenance on non fasting days, as one gets very satiated on this diet! Eye opener though with big calorie deficits. Wonder if it's worth having a few carbs at night to get calories up on occasion as cannot do it on keto alone

Let's see, IF is free, self administered, no health "experts" needed, reduces major metabolic diseases and symptoms, helps with Longevity and overall improves health...I wonder why the powers to be don't like it

From my own personal experience I was in taking 130g protein a day and I weigh 130lb and when I implemented intermittent fasting I saw a huge decline in my muscle mass whereas when I was eating in a deficit without IF then I was able to upkeep my muscle mass

I tried IF for 10 days and gained weight so trashed it. I did the lunch and supper one in a 6 hour window. For years I have never eaten lunch so have reverted to that. Just now cutting portion sizes. Need to lose about 20kgs

I think it's a good test of healthy your diet is; if you have to eat frequently, your diet is not healthy. Like an overweight person feeling a faint when they haven't snacked for 2 hours. Our bodies seem to be designed to eat infrequently, and to have fat as the major energy source.

People attack intermittent fasting because it's personal. The very idea that you can improve your health by taking scheduled breaks to allow insulin to drop out of your system and switch to burning fat is too simple. If you are counting calories, have paid thousands of dollars over the course of the last 20+ years, you're selling products, etc that have a foundation in eating more than 3 times a day it makes a person *angry* to hear fasting achieves consistent and sustained weight loss and health improvements. No one wants to hear they may have wasted both money and time by following the *gossip* of nutrition. . I only pay attention to studies *that are peer reviewed*. If other scientists and doctors haven't reviewed the findings they are of no use to me. IF is just the name for not eating all throughout the day and feasting on quality foods. Fasting is ancient. Nothing new and very effective at improving longevity.

Butcher Box is junk, I listened to your video, placed an order, it took 4.5 days to arrive after they shipped it, I am in WA state, everything arrived thawed and the instruction is to re-freeze everything again. But meat loses quality and digestibility when it's refrozen. At least 2 items were warm to the touch with bubbles inside.

I started a 16/8 daily fast a few months ago. My belt got loose and I felt like I probably lost 5 to 10 lbs. I decided to weight myself and was surprised I actually gained a pound! Probably ate less, which tells me my body must have been using my food more efficiently.

I fast 2-3 times per week. Need more guidance on how to stay out of deficit while IF, especially with longer ones in the 20-36 hour range it’s almost impossible to eat a day’s caloric budget. More manageable to get all the calories in and still eat whole, healthy foods in the 16:8 or 18:6 IF schemes. Otherwise I find myself getting into an automatic deficit that is hard to make up.

Hey man! I’m 20, I eat good, drink only water and lots of it, exercise a ton and I’m just trying a fasting cycle 8on-16off. My cousins won’t try it because they think snacking throughout the day is the best way to gain muscle I think the foods we’re eating and the ways we’re training have a huge impact, but what about our bodies only absorbing certain amounts of protein an hour? Can you gain muscle only eating 8 hours of the day? I feel like it’s obvious you can.. the problem is all of the misinformation on google!

I always seem to lose significant muscle on IF, it worked for me in the past when I was training more, but the physio I'm doing at the moment prohibits that kind of exercise. It is kind of distressing how my body chooses to cannibalize muscle over fat.... Something must be awry with my hormones.

Great video as usual. Are there any natural ways to keep testosterone levels up while having a small caloric deficiency? Not sure my caloric rate has decreased much since I started intermittent fasting but guessing it has gone down some even if it's just from choosing better foods to eat. I really don't want to lose testosterone levels or sex drive being that happy wife happy life lol.

If TRE is supposed to increase both androgen receptor density and HGH, it seems peculiar that there was any muscle mass loss. But if muscles increased in strength or endurance, maybe it was water loss.
