The most important step to not go mad: When you have a rough sketch made and are adding exact measurements, LOCK THEM when you have entered the correct number. Otherwise it can be "a little" infuriating when you try to change the last ones and they mess up one you already set.

@ThomasSanladerer thank you for this series. I’ve gone from, “I wonder what 3D printing is all about” to “I ordered a Prusa Mini, filament, build plates, etc” AND I already have my upgrades planned for the future; Bondtech IFS extruder, E3D Revo Micro and Capricorn XS tubing. Your videos are invaluable to those of us that are just getting started in the 3D printing world, thank you again.

I bought my first printer, Ender 3 Pro, one month ago. I like getting my nerd on. Just bought a Rasberry Pi 4 for wifi. I have a very busy life and career. The printer allows me to unwind. I also like the intellectual challenge of learning the machine, filaments, slicers & all the new CAD programs. It's fun and I get to make toys for my kid.

I discovered yesterday that my library offers 3D printing (or at least it says so on their website -- I don't know if it's shut down due to covid), and the first video in this series was at the top of the results when I went to do some more research on what I'd need to know to effectively use it. I have a couple ideas of what I want to make, including a game idea I was toying with last summer, and am looking forward trying them out!

Tom, thank you for the IDEAS! I have an E3Pro and an E3v.2. The Pro has the 4.2.7 motherboard, the v.2 has the 4.2.2 (the 4.2.7 is on the self). I have these dialed in very nicely. I don't have a huge filament library, but I get one a month or so. I can kick off a 3-day print, as long as adhesion is happy. All goes well. I use a combination of Elmers Glue Stick, and Aquanet (the purple can just like mom had, OMG) I can go for 5+ prints before I need to soak the glass bed, in a ziplock bag with 4 layers of paper towel & 91% alcohol. Thank you for your support. JLH

Hi Tom, GREAT series and thanks so much for investing your time to produce some fantastic content. You asked us to comment on what we'd like to see - well, I think one topic that would be very cool and useful, which is very often overlooked, are "Top-Down" resin printers instead of the more widely manufactured "Bottom-Up" versions. Personally, I think the Top-Down versions print with a much higher quality and quite often they use little to no supports due to their higher viscosities of resin to support part geometry, among other reasons. In any case, doing a video about them I think would be beneficial, if for nothing else, to introduce your audience to them if they don't already know about them. Thanks again for all you do for our community! Kevin

Thoroughly enjoyed/learned from your series; many thanks! One thing I'd like to see you explore a little more is 3D SCANNING. It seems to me that the gap in price between "entry level" sensors and "professional" scanners is not so much the hardware, but the attendant software. Else, why are they so expensive?

I've been experimenting printing TPU & PETG in layers on the same object by swapping over the filament at specific heights during the print, it's proving quite interesting. An early test I tried was a 40x40x1mm piece where the bottom half of the layers are TPU, top half PETG, it produced something that's more rigid than a 100% TPU print but doesn't snap into pieces like a 100% PETG print. It does require inserting custom gcode to make the printer stop so you manually change the filament and also turn on/off the fan for PETG, not forgetting making sure the extrusion speed isn't too fast because TPU doesn't like printing at PETG speed.

One thing I will say; If you're ready to graduate from Tinkercad but enjoy using primitives, try OpenSCAD. It's very similar in the use of primitives, except it's based off a sort of programming language instead of a graphical interface, You can make really cool parametric designs with it.

To be honest, Thomas, you could have expanded that last "practical trouble-shooting" video into four or five videos. As a complete novice, I felt totally lost - I couldn't see the effect of the problem in the print in time to follow your discussion. All in all, though, I think this series is an excellent introduction. I plan on rewatching each episode several times. Thank you.

WOW!! I am featured in Tom's video!!!! I am watching this one relaxed back in my chair and all of a sudden i see my name!! I almost fell out of the chair!! Thanks a lot for the reply Tom. I will be using 0.2-0.3mm first layer height from now on (my usual was 0.35-0.4 mm). However, i would like to ask one more question about the extrusion width of the first layer. Do you recommend to set it higher than the nozzle size (for example 0.6-0.8mm, for better adhesion), or keep it at 2 times the first layer height, as slic3er suggests? I am enjoying your videos and they helped me make my own DIY 3D printer (from recycled parts!) and evolve it. It now prints quite nice, on par with printers of much higher value... For the future please consider making more technical videos. I know they do not produce as much income, but every now and then it is good to have one. Thank you for everything! :)

As an absolute parts design and "CAD" noob, I really love Tinkercad. And for my comrade noobs, I highly advice doing the free beginner tutorials. And keep the "tooltips" on for your first handful of creations. While its easy to use, a few rather basic functions aren't equally intuitive so can be difficult to figure out just through experimentation. My only real gripe with tinkercad, is the same as many others - actual round stuff, like cylinders etc. Not a huge fan of how difficult they've made that bit, given the easy-to-learn-and-use nature of the concept.

PETG is replacing ABS as my goto for high temp applications. It doesn't warp like ABS can, and usually doesn't require a heated chamber. I usually OpenScad for my designs. It's not a true WYSIWYG, but close.

OK so one question that is burning on my mind after watching this whole series that I think wasn't touched on... is there anything that can be done if I want to print something, but the print volume of the printer is too small to actually print the thing? Sure I could invest in a new printer, but what if I'd rather not do that? Is there anything that can be done here? Surely some models can be split into parts, but then what? How do you combine the parts?

The one piece of advice I would give to a person who wants to get started in 3d printing is not to scrimp on the printer. Buy an established brand with a solid reputation, good reviews and a good community behind it. My first printer was a Wanhao, and while it was OK, it was difficult to use and I didn't feel like I had anywhere to go for help. I now own a Prusa MK3 I upgraded to the MK3S, and I love my printer. I don't think you can get a better reputation than Josef Prusa has--I mean, he invented the i3 format! And the community is great. It's be a much better experience printing with this printer than my first one. OK, so two pieces of advice, I guess. Get a printer that has auto-bed leveling. Leveling a print bed with screws in the corners is a pain in the ass, doesn't hold, and you end up digging your nozzle into your print bed. And if you can, go for a printer with a removable, flexible print bed as well.

Thanks for the series and the other videos! I've been eying 3d printing for a time now, and it looks like I can finally start looking for a printer myself (didn't have the space in my house to put one). But now I'm looking at what printer I should be looking for buying, or better yet, how do I know if a printer is good (for me). I've been watching some reviews but since I only have theoretical knowledge I have no idea what printer I should start at. The makerspace in the area has closed down for an unknown period due to the (still) current health situation, and I'll be moving away from the access of it. Plus I'd like to have my own machine so I can work on it after work hours and tweak all the settings in the slicers etc without potentially ruining someone else's machine or machine time.

You have done a few reviews of the Artillery SWX1. I have had one for just over a year and in the beginning, I had some issues that have been resolved. As of today, I am getting a Heater fail issue to cause a system shutdown so to speak. The bed heats up and all of the other functions are working. I replaced the heater cartridge once I found out that it was bad. But the replacement cartridge did not resolve the heater fail issue. In your opinion would I need to reflash the firmware to fix this problem since the hardware checks out good.

I've watched this whole series because II need a gear made. I don't have a printer, and do no know if they are capable of this level of definition. A pal tried to make it but he said he needed a smaller nozzle to make better defined teeth. There are 107 teeth on this 32.5mm diameter gear. Is this something that can be 3D printed? The gaps in gears are .035" deep. Anybody? The original gear is made of nylon and runs inside a brass gear. The 1970's nylon eventually cracks. I'm hoping a modern nylon or other suitable plastic would last longer. The part is not high stress but high-precision and is pressed over a bearing. Going to need half a dozen of them. More if we can get a good one made.

I wouldn't use a premium printer as a reference to problem solving as Prusa products make everything a lot easier but they're no affordable. I get you're in Europe and the cost of getting one isn't a big deal but rest of the world doesn't have that. Majority of 3D printing community own $250+ printers, where Prusa is $700+.
