I lived less than a block from the tracks on 12th street in 1952. Watched the steam engines on the tracks from out front yard! I still have a couple of pennies flattened by passing trains.

The U P was always a class act. In the mid-1950s, whilst visiting my grandparents in Laddonia MO [served by GM&O's motor train from Bloomington Il to Kansas City MO], my dad would drive us to Mexico MO so that we could view the arrival of the UP's "City of St Louis" [carried by the Wabash Railroad between Kansas City and St Louis]. It was the most beautiful streamliner as I recall.

I noticed the pole lines but I don't think there were any wires on them. When railroads started taking them down, it just seemed the biggest part of the scenery was ruined. But I understand they were a lot of maintenance to keep up.

A beautiful example of yesterdays engineering. Well preserved with loving care. A person taking the time to film the occasion with professional equipment for those of us unable to be there but can watch you tube.. Then the absolute ignorance of people, walking in front of the camera , standing in front with their toy cameras(smart phones) without even the semblance of a thought for others wanting a view too. Thanks to the photographer. To the Ignorant ones there is no hope for them.

I realize the camera above is using a telephoto lens so the people who appear to be "hogging" the view are actually farther away than they appear. However, I have been camping and riding dirt bikes at Warren, California since 1976, a great train spotting place. When SP 4449 was passing through, before it showed, my lone campsite was suddenly teeming with photographers. I hopped on my 1977 Yamaha TT500 and started riding right up next to the ballast when some photographer started motherfucking me. I thought: "How rude! You invade my camp without so much as a 'Hello in the camp!' and are cussing me out for riding in my camp?" (Yes, I have UP permission) Another was nice and I asked him to send me a copy of the 4449 passing through my camp. I gave him my address. Never heard from him. I guess my point is, some "rail fans" can be some of the biggest shitbirds around. People, if you're breaking traffic laws trying to stay ahead of these trains to photograph, remember to extend the courtesy of asking permission to enter one's camp with a "Hello in the camp!" and wait to be recognized. Don't just tear up in a cloud of dust, run in and set up your tripods, you blithering idiots! You collectively should have known.

Not all the wheel sets were back yet, the sub frames were massive. The boiler was being refined and had been checked for weak areas...

This is truly fearsome! The United States of America's rail tracks traverse roads that are getting used by fast-moving automobiles with no gated and guarded level crossings? Again, what chills my heart is to watch children accompanied by their elders prancing around and standing on a rail track that has a train coming directly to them, and the elders do not rebuke and pull the children back to safe turf? Pathetic! And we in India complain to our union railway ministry of still not having completed its task of constructing manned and/or automated level crossings on our entire railway network to prevent accidents on such un-manned level crossings, even after 71 years have passed since our independence.
@sidneyfrederickson39416 жыл бұрын
BNSF among others, is spending serious money helping local governments build below grade and overhead crossings. But it depends on the local authority. The railroads have no power to change streets and roads they do not own.
@dumdum77865 жыл бұрын
Most of Americas railroad crossings aren't actually on a road, most of them are people's driveways, the railroad can't just put crossing gates on someone's private property.

Hard to calibrate from this angle of viewing, but it seems to me like those safety gates went down awfully late----there were cars running across the tracks not that far in front of the train. That assumes this is not a piece of track with a 3 mph speed limit just in front of a station or similar. I still don't understand how the black tender can track properly with 7 sets of fixed wheels.

With a lot of help from the diesel engine (which I find sad to see included). You may have noticed too how UP 844's wheels were slipping as it arrived, and from that I imagine its load pull limit was either at maximum, or exceeded, therefore a helper was required.
@steveonthefarm86716 жыл бұрын
Diesel is there to provide head end power (electric, ac, etc.) to the passenger cars behind, nothing more, it's a common practice. The steam engine doesn't need any help and can pull a full freight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIacpnitiKyjb68 Same steam engine, who's helping who?
@steveonthefarm86716 жыл бұрын
The diesel engine is the generator, it produces electric power that can drive electric motors on it's wheels and also provides electric power to the remainder of the train. The steam engine is doing the pulling here and is capable of pulling far more. I believe the steam engine has a small steam turbine generator on the roof somewhere that powers the radios, the only electric it needs.
@steveonthefarm86716 жыл бұрын
Can't say I can see it, but we don't know what's in the cars. 1- Steam engine, 2- fuel, used to be coal, now likely oil converted, 3- water, 4- diesel engine, after that there is one car with a stack, I believe that's maybe a café/kitchen prep car w/ stove vents. There is one car that appears to have integrated air or something in a rooftop bubble and one towards the end with closed sides and no vents that I believe is lavatories or storage or such. Either way, no worries and it's a good video eh?
