It is a beautiful song in which Pentagram describes the cage style of the Ottoman period through the eyes of the 3rd Osman, who waited for the throne for 51 years. I will try to explain the lyrics of the song by blending it with history. With the cage system, the practice of going up to the sanjak of the princes came to an end. This situation generally had a bad effect on the princes, who lived in isolation from the outside, in the palace, both mentally and physically. The probability of getting out of the cage(Palace) was that they were suitable for the throne according to the akbar and ershed system. Akbar and ershed system stipulated that the eldest and sane person should ascend to the throne. Thus, a settled method was formed in determining the sultan and fratricide was prevented. Yes, now let's try to transition from small to song. The 3rd Osman, who is the subject of the song, lived a cage life for 51 years. In the cage life, the princes wait in isolation from the outside, either to die of natural causes or to ascend to the throne one day. Since they do not have enough true knowledge of the world, they usually do not succeed in state affairs when they ascend to the throne, and the viziers take care of state affairs instead. It is forbidden to have children in their cage life. The purpose is to keep the number of princes and not to cause a possible struggle for the throne. The 3rd Osman lived in a cage for 51 years due to a few possibilities such as the high number of people suitable for accession to the throne and the long-term survival of the person who took the throne. this is the longest cage time.

Hey there! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain all of this, I really appreciate it! That is a fascinating story and so hard to imagine. Crazy to think that someone can spend a life of isolation like that and then become king with no true knowledge of the world. Amazing topic for an awesome song.

A little side information about 3rd Osman: he disgusted women for some reason. So when he had to walk in/pass by the 'harem' section of palace (where only the women live) he'd wear the shoes with nailed bottom to make run away the girls and make sure them totally stay away out of his sight. (imagine the unpleasant sound when you scratch the stone/marble with metal!) This fact is the reason why he was called one of the "known gay" Ottoman emperors. Legend says he hadn't any 'problem' at all with men nor very young boys :) Though we can't exactly know if he was really gay or it was just a mental issue because of a lifetime lockdown, of course. Another P.S: 'Lion' does symbolize the Ottoman ruler, the emperor, the sultan. So the part 'lion in the cage' is actually a good metaphor about an emperor(!) who's been locked down from his birth until his accession to the throne.

I knew you'd like this. I also know you'll like "1000 in the eastland" (the live one uploaded in 2012) Also this one was about "Osman the 3rd" - 25th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. (From wiki ); "Osman III was the younger half-brother of Mahmud I. When his father was deposed from the throne in 1703, he was taken back to Istanbul and imprisoned in the Kafes(the cage). Osman III lived in the Kafes for 51 years. [4] He was secretly circumcised on 17 April 1705 with the other princes here. He was among the princes in Ahmed's entourage. He also later made trips to the sultan inside and outside the city. Together with his elder brother Mahmud's embassy on October 1, 1730, he became the biggest prince waiting for the throne. Osman III lived most of his life as a prisoner in the palace, and as a consequence, he had some behavioural peculiarities when he took the throne. Unlike previous sultans, he hated music, and banished all musicians from the palace. According to Baron de Tott, Osman III was an angry and modest type of ruler."

Hello. Thanks for this great review. They are probably the best and most famous metal band in Turkey. Their first name was Mezarkabul means "Grave acceptance" or Acceptance for Grave" something like that but later years they changed to more international and more recognisable name. I think they are really good. I have been listening them for over 20 years and still very much enjoy their songs. Anyways, stay safe. All the best
@punch48822 жыл бұрын
Wrong. They started to their career with the name of Pentagram. That name was not in use in these years. There was an american heavy metal band with the same name but they was not active in these years. When they return to music turkish Pentagram changed their name to Mezarkabul just for the albums relaesed outside of turkey. But they are still known as Pentagram in Turkey.

I just came across this video of yours after watching your reaction to Sebnem Ferah's concert :) Pentagram uses social, historical and political issues in their songs quite often. You'll find lyrics from early poets, and notes from traditional songs. They are one of the earliest (popular) metal bands in Turkey, as well as creating songs in English & Turkish. I remember their songs from my early teen ages. (I am now 42 :) By the way, Pentagram is the band's original name, they then adapted Mezarkabul as their name and use both together (I guess until it's fully accepted and recognised) in different platforms. This song, as you put it, is about the reign of Ottoman sultans and the relationship with the heirs of the throne, and their siblings. Here is the title song (Mezarkabul) from the album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ2ZZJaIn66WpdE
