MGM (Match Grade Machine) makes excellent barrels. They specialize in Thompson Center barrels. Custom chamber reaming is available at no extra cost for standard calibers (17 through 50). The one I bought (used) is in 338 Win Mag 28" and it is so precisely accurate. Not a fan of polymer stocks, but it allows me to carry a back up rifle in my pack in the back country. Also, if the weather conditions are poor I can scabbard my Ruger #1 and preserve it. The simplicity is wonderful. Thanks for the tip about aftermarket stocks, I will certainly check into it. Great production sir, I was starting to think I was one of the few enjoying this firearm. If you ever tire of yours let me know.

Dizzying array of barrels. For many years I owned "Contenders", and the performance from any TC barrel I purchased was outstanding. I know the "Encores" have been around for the past 20 years or so. I recently picked up one with a number of extra barrels included in the deal. According to its former owner, it originally started out as a pistol frame and he had converted it to a rifle by adding a butstock and a different forend. I now have one frame with a wide assortment of accessories and barrels. Very versatile and accurate single shot that can be used for just about any type of game. Thanks for the fine video and enjoy your Encore.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I really like the interchangeable barrel on a very accurate platform. I know my father's contender was a tack driver don't see any reason why the encore would be any different. I could have a 22lr for cheap fun for me and my son and also a 243 for dear and target +++. You could conceivably hunt rifle, shotgun and black powder cartridge season all with the same rifle. Not the character and beauty of the Sharp's or High Wall but very versatile and cool. I also love that you can customize them with different finishes on receiver and Barrel and multiple stock options. Thanks

I love my T/C Contenders and Encores. I have had them since I was old enough to purchase a gun on my own and lived through all the generations of them. For me since the 80s but my dad has had them since 1968. many actions, barrels, and combinations. If you wanted to the encore could be a one gun system for mice up to dangerous game. We used to be able to switch from rifle to pistol without concern but lately the federal gov. has taken issue with that. Not that it matters to me, I have multiple actions designated for each. It is hard to beat its ability to be accurate and be able to create any look that you want to achieve.

Thank you my friend. Hopefully the government will face significant opposition - there must be far more gun owners than pipeline objectors and First Nations are fantastic gun owners and hunters - going back to long before the Europeans showed up and wrecked their hunting grounds. Taking away guns from First Nations peoples is yet another and maybe final insult.

I think the fact that there is an aftermarket for people to put some really nice furniture on this rifle speaks well of its action and accuracy. When it comes to Thompson/Center I think of their traditional Hawken rifle. They are well made guns with great lines and were a significant part (along with the film Jeremiah Johnson) of the muzzleloading resurgence in the 1970's. Sadly that gun has been discontinued, but its legacy is felt whenever there is a new convert to the holy black.

That little 6.8 is not a bad round. I built a ar in it. Just for dealing with crop dammage at night. It holds plenty of ammo it's easy to load/ unload when you have to cross a public road going from field to field. And with it having all most no recoil you can keep you eye on the animals ( mostly hogs) to see where they go down. That little 90 gr bonded golddot sp. @,2800 fps. Can put a hurting on hogs up to the 250 lbs. Range. And I think it would make a good home defense gun/ round. Less noise and blast than the 223 with a heavy/ bigger bullet With less SD to cut down on over penetration. And all most any one could be traind to use it safely and effectively.

I hope people read your post. I have messages from several that the 6.8 is obsolete - it seems like a fine round to me; even with the 6.5 Grendel, .300 Blackout and others around. I still like the 8mm Kurz though - so maybe I'm a little off.

MGM will make pretty much any barrel you like, so long as it's safe for the Encore action. EABCO tends to have a fair number of barrels already made to ship, as well as accessories. A fellow named Mike Bellm knows pretty much everything (he says that too) there is to know about the T/C products. I have 5 frames including an older Catamount framed Contender so as to not run afoul of our (US) SBR laws when using handgun (fewer than 16") barrels. As my shoulder ages I find myself leaning toward 6mm, 25 and 6.5/260 caliber chamberings. MGM made a 25.35 for me and it's "one ragged hole" and a pleasure to shoot. Boyds makes some very nice wooden stocks for the Encore line. Don't know if Bullberrys is still around. However their products are top quality too. BTW, T/C also made a very nice rifle named the TCR. The "Aristocrat version with fine wood and double set triggers is very elegant. Anyone who appreciates single shot rifles should certainly take a look.

There nothing wrong with the newengland rifles I have had a few and everyone of the we're well shooting guns. And the 45-70 I had in it was a favorite hunting rifle. I had a small tree stand in the middle of a wet weather swamp it was the intersection of my property with 3 naboring land owners. Each property has about 4-5 Acer's of it. So I used the 45-70 to make sure the deer or hog could not go far after a good hit. The little rifle was light short easy to move and did its job every time. What more could you ask for? Thanks David - I think they offer the Grendel - I'll see. The 7.92x33 is ballistically even worse - but within the distances I use it should be very interesting. Everything I read about the Grendel is very positive - like most 6.5s - those longish bullets are something.

I have them and within 300 yds it's basically a wash. One does what the other will do. The 6.5 is a better cartridge in single shots and bolt actions but not in the AR. The 6.8 is a better self loading cartridge because it has a superior case design that has some taper to it for engineered feed and extraction reliability. This is the primary mission in a service cartridge and it's where the 6.8 shines. Some only look at published ballistic charts and forum talk but there more to some of these design than meets the eye. Full out highest velocity sometimes is t what a design is always aiming at. Sometimes there's design and performance elements that aren't taken into consideration and aren't widely spoken about.

Be careful attaching that 204, if it's less than 16", to that frame. If the ProHunter was originally Registered as a rifle you may have inadvertently created an SBR. I picked up an Encore last month in 45-70. I did this specifically because I'm in VA and I figured the same idea that the Gov't would take this one last as its "just a single shot" ... far from the truth. Extremely useful platform.

Sad that H&R does not make the Handi-rifle no more. Probably not as good as the Thompson Center but very good still. When I bought my H&R Handi rifle it came only in the 444 Marlin. Then ordered the 45-70, 270 Win, 308 Win barrels, and the 20 gauge shotgun barrel for it. Now have 5 different calibers for one rifle.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Think we were all wrong on that. Never thought Remington was going to take over Marlin and H&R like they did. Who knows about this stuff ? Do remember one thing on what told me to order these extra barrels, by coincidence everyone said at that time Remington is going to take over H&R as well as you know they did, and they said that they were going to discontinue this H&R Handi-rifle and their extra barrels. Then don't remember every part of this, but there were 1 or 2 or 3 reasons on why I got the extra barrels for it, but again don't remember off hand.

I believe the 6.8 SPC [ Special Purpose Cartridge ] Was made for the military and now there drifting away from it making ammo scarce probably not near as scarce as 8mm kurz your going for. me I might want to get a Sturm. 44 to match the cartridge and have some real fun. There`s 2 of available on a site right now. But in all seriousness the thompson contender has always been the modern go to for accuracy and interchangeability and the nice wood that usually comes on an upper end gun. H&R tried there hand at it for a while but didnt have the looks or the accuracy to compete in the circuit . try a place callled Ammo Seek .com for 8 kurz it will save you some money. I`d still lean on a sturm.44 for the fun stick only $ 25 k . but you sure can have a lot of fun picking the willows off a willow tree with one

I haven't had the chance to hunt with or even shoot one. They have always intrigued me though. Can the same receiver be used for everything? Example: Could one receiver be used for a 12ga rifled barrel, a 308, and a 223? I wouldn't buy those specific calibers, it is just a wide range of cartridges. I guess the more appropriate question would be: is the barrel the ONLY thing that needs to be changed? I'm curious also if the same receiver could be used in a rifle format and a handgun format... if that is even legal. I have seen hunting TC Encore handguns with a scope and bipod. I could see where that would be helpful in Michigan.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi SRT Mike - as far as I know everything you described would work - I'm just not sure about the 12 gauge - maybe the receiver is big enough - but maybe not. All the other barrels : rifle, pistol, shotgun, blackpowder, long, short - they all fit. Take off the forend, pop out the pin, fit in the new barrel - pop the pin back in and put the forend back on and you're in business. Love these encores. Laws are another story - I don't know where what is legal and it keeps changing. One would have to check. All the best.

You have a great rifle there .. It wasn't until my mid 60's that i picked up my first T/C and it has grown in size with new barrels as time passed .. Mostly i shoot my Contenders in calibers i like .. First one is 30 Herrrett and the second one is 6mmTCU and of course the .44 magnum .. But not always in that order .. In the Pacific Northwest i have only met one shooter at the range who had a 6.8 SPC chambering , nice ctg when you look hard at it for what it is and will do and very accurate .. The 300 Blackout seems to gaining ground here too .. I like the break action of the T/C and have fired them off and on for years , it's only been the passed 12 years that i finally got into owning one..To me there is a lot to be said there .. My 6mm TCU is a 1/2" ctg at 100 yards which i have taken out to 300 yards a few times with excellent results .. I have taken deer with the 30 Herrett and deer and black bear with the .44 magnum barrel installed .. I have not hunted deer with my 6mm TCU ctg just yet .. You have a great rifle there and it's nothing to change barrels as you know ... All my barrels wear the same scope base so it's no problem to swing the scope to a different barrel when i want the 2X-6X scope ..

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Some years back S&W bought the Thompson Center holdings , not sure just what year it was . You should have no trouble finding a .44 mag barrel, it's a very accurate ctg and for big game it does very well . Not every shooter and Hunter wants a 500 S&W clambering I know I don't as I have no real need for one.. My next big game i want to hunt is Elk and the .44 magnum will work fine.

I own a Contender. If the serial number has an "R" it's considered a rifle receiver. If it has a "P" it's considered a pistol. The only difference between the pistol and rifle receivers is that one letter in the serial number. A pistol receiver can be used as a pistol or rifle, but a rifle receiver cannot be used as a pistol i.e. with a barrel shorter than 16 1/4". This is the law in the U.S. I believe. Yet another lame law.
