Great video as these are two of my all time favorite photographers! The work of Frank and Larrain explore a more "poetic" way of photographing -focusing on the capture of mood and emotion over strict adherence to rules of form.

Nice video and thoughtfully done, Tatiana. It had a number of overlaps with an article I just finished reading, in the New Yorker magazine, an interview with Stephen Shore, who talks eloquently of many aspects of photography. One thing Shore mentions is the multiple ways that photographers (and everyone, really) "SEE" something. There is a physical aspect (physically "seeing" is what the eyes do). There is a cognitive aspect, essentially one in which we 'apprehend' (Shore's word) the image which our eyes have seen. And then there is what he calls a metacognitive aspect, which he says is, essentially, being aware of what we have apprehended. There are many other fascinating parts of the interview but this whole conversation about 'seeing' made me wonder, again, how photographers like Frank, or Larraín, "see" things... and to what extent it is or may be both similar, and different, from the way or ways that I 'see' things. It's food for thought. So is this video piece of yours...thank you for it...for making me think.

It's inspiring to see your videos. For old fossils like me, it's interesting to see what good photographers could do with the equipment they had available. In other words, it's the photographer that make the picture - not the camera ;) Keep on with your great work!

Another great video. I love the focus on photographs and photographers. It also helps me, the photographer that is never close enough, to hear about Frank being "observational". Thank you. You asked about other photographers I'm interested in. These are my current interests: Paul Strand in Mexico, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide, and Pablo Monasterio.

After watching documentaries about #photographers Robert Frank and Sergio Larrain, I got curios and look them both up. I learned they were outsiders in foreign lands, Frank in America and Larrain worked for Magnum Photos did street photography in Paris, London and other parts of the world. An event which made Robert Frank understand what's it's like being an outsider in America was being arrested in Arkansas 1955. While working on his photo book the Americans, an Arkansan cop saw Frank's disheveled appearance, heard his foreign accent and noticing his camera gear in the car, arrested Frank on suspicion. After three days of being jailed and interrogated by cops, Frank was released after a FBI fingerprint check cleared him. No doubt changing his respective about photographing America.

Yep, nobody tells you how difficult it is to balance personal and paid work… even personal beliefs with photography practice. Some photographers are purely business people and I believe in those cases creativity decreases and a more documentary approach rises. If we add social media and ubiquity of photography now, we have a tricky situation to handle. The part I enjoy the most is the moment with the camera, when I’m taking the photos, then of course I enjoy developing and stuff but the thrill of “I think I’ve got something good and I can’t wait to see” is the best for me.

Both of these books are among my favourites. There’s something about these photographers that were at the very leading edge of the street photography genre that I can’t quite describe. The photos seem to have a classic beauty but still hold a tension or raise a slight anxiety even today. IMO Louis Faurer is the very best from this era, not so well known, but absolute master nonetheless.

Excellent vid..👍🔥 No doubt Larrain was influenced by Frank's images. "The Americans" was monumental in it's impact on contemporary photography at the time and still is relevant today as you exemplify in your video. A true classic.

Good point about the contrast between commerce and personal style, although another point that was missing was Frank's work with his publisher, S t e i d l, on selecting and framing the images. I saw a fascinating exhibit "Robert Frank “Books and Films, 1947-2016” at the Tokyo University of the Arts about Frank's work with his publisher to create "The Americans."

Love your videos exploring photobooks. I took a 4.5 yr trip around the world and documented everything in images. I've made a few photobooks of specific countries but I'm really struggling to wrap all the images together in a cohesive way. Everytime I try it seems as if the images can not fully connect with one another - making a well arranged photobook seems like a whole separate endeavor unto itself - any tips or advice on how to approach such a project? Thanks again for a great video!

Hey Brad thank you for commenting, I don’t really know because I’m not familiar with the work you have done but I would advice to get your hands on a comprehensive collection of a photographer where he or she had their work compiled into a whole volume to see and get a feel of how to arrange such a comprehensive view of one’s work - I know Elliott Erwitt had a couple of books like that particularly his book of colour photos. And then look at your own work and try to find a common ground or line, if you have to cut some images off I think it’s okay

Thanks for covering the 'existential' undercurrent which allowed these two photographers the freedom to move about to shoot. CB came from a privileged background, Yasuhiro Ishimoto didn't (Pentax Family #28.) Either did Capa, but he had Gerda Taro and was her muse. Being a productive photographer, creatively is fine, but they have to have a lot of intelligent "support."
