Thorens TD 165 Turntable fix and service

Very good work, I own a Thorens TD146 that I bought new in 1984. It's the same turntable as the 165 with the addition of arm lift at the end of play. It's so nice to see you fix this old machine up and you even cleaned it!!!

These are beautiful tables, TD165 and TD166 mki. Few people realise that with a full service and Chadwick modifications, rewiring the grounding, massive birch base plate, adjustable conic feet etc this table beats the dust out of the newest Rega Planar 3. Did a comparison the other day with a friend with the same Rega Exact Pickup . He sold the Rega next day.There is simply no competition. Nothing you can do with the speed unless you find and install an external speed box. I play happily with mine running a tad fast. Better actually with a new belt than before. I love Thorens

Hi, interesting work. What kind of oil did you use to lubricate the spindle platter axis? A Thorens special oil? A generic oil? A sewing machine oil? Regards...

It is also called compressor oil. It’s is similar to sewing machine oil but higher viscosity. I experienced that sewing machine oil can be a little thin liquefied.

Thank you. For the deck I was using Meguiar’s cleaner wax. Doesn’t only work on cars 😉. For the wooden details I was using an ordinary furniture oil.

You still haven't serviced the turntable: Cleaning and relubricating the main bearing, checking tonearm friction and readjusting tonearm bearings, confirming that the belt is not scraping the guide, which might require rebalancing the springs, replacing the foam inside the springs, confirming correct speed with a stroboscope, etc.

Hi, Great video! I was hoping you could answer a quick and easy question: I have a Thorens TD-165 that I'm hooking up for the first time. The RCA's are black and white and I've searched all over to find out which is Left channel and which is Right but haven't been able to find anything. I thought you might be a good person to ask. Thanks in advance!

This gonna be a guess. The white one have always been left channel so then black should be right. That can be verified if you use a multimeter testing from red wire at the cartridge to centre of black RCA, with arm in lower position. That should give close to zero ohm. I hope this was helpful.

Any chance I can get you to print and sell me a couple of those plastic anti skate spindles? I have the same broken part on my TD165 tonearm. I’m in the USA.

Hello friend. I could print you a couple, but I seriously want to find some filament which is a little stronger, because those I did, is a little fragile. Alternatively I can try to make some from aluminium when back to work.

Antiskating can not be adjusted without the arm on the turning table.

Thank you very much for your comment. That is correct. As I mentioned in an earlier feedback, was that some things were not included in the video. I’m using a specific anti skate table to adjust the anti skate, when the arm is on the turntable, after the weight of the stylus is set. But that I prefer to do, when the turntable is already placed in the environment it is supposed to stay.

Buy some microfiber cloths. Go with the grain and go slowly.
