6:10 thank you for appreciating my boy. "Thorfinn is a walking contradiction" is such an important observation. it's so correct, it's just constant turbulence with him, and I love that this story is about a kid like him. he's as difficult as he could possibly be, and I have such a soft spot for seeing the story of that sort of character get told. Thors would be heartbroken to see him like this... Thorfinn's grief, anger, and shame have led him a very long way, and we're only just beginning. I think I've said this before, but I love it when Vinland Saga presents situations that feel like two battling halves of an argument. and that's Thorfinn's character in a nutshell. the first four episodes of Vinland Saga are vitally important, because they are the base statement, while Thorfinn's every action is the other half of the argument. and even just in the reasoning behind Thorfinn's presence here at all, the logic feels disjointed. how much destruction is he going to sow himself, throughout the process of seeking his revenge? who will have the right to hate him in the end, by his own criteria? also, yes, Askeladd is a hugely difficult character to get a grasp on, especially on a first watch. but what I will say, is that regardless of his true feelings on Thorfinn, he is observably manipulating this kid to a massive degree. like, look how much older Thorfinn is now, and in all this time, Askeladd still hasn't granted him another duel. his prompt of "accomplish something great" was always open-ended. he could go on without dueling Thorfinn for theoretically as long as he wanted, based purely on the implication that Thorfinn still isn't good enough to be worth the time. and it's Thorfinn's shame that really drives him... he's constantly demanding to be taken seriously, and Askeladd is constantly rejecting it, on the grounds that Thorfinn doesn't deserve it. the constant drive to "earn it" means that Askeladd could get Thorfinn to do just about anything. "bring me a head with a helmet" is the first concrete goal that Askeladd has let Thorfinn have. it took years, but he finally set a condition in stone, and explicitly agreed to duel Thorfinn if it is met. and this is not at all about whether Askeladd thinks Thorfinn can do it or not... the man is not taking Thorfinn seriously, even now. once they had their treasure, he was about to assume that Thorfinn had died and just leave, with zero effort to confirm that at all. he was just that confident that Thorfinn had failed. it sends the message to Thorfinn, that Askeladd has no faith in his capabilities whatsoever. also, 16:40 this is an especially interesting tactic because, if you'll remember, Thors was nimble in the same way. he'd jump from ship to ship in order to pick them off one by one. once again, Thorfinn has inherited something from his father, which his father probably wouldn't be very proud of.

"Why did they create a character like this?" This is actually from the first chapter of the manga. And also when it was a shounen. So Yukimura hadn't really established a style or tone for the story yet. Which is why the Noble has a comically weird character design.

Most of the time, we start off hating Askeladd for his cowardly murder of Thors, but strangely enough, as the story progresses we can't help but love him, even though he is undoubtedly a murderer and a villain. Askeladd is one of the best characters!

I see a lot of commenters saying Askeladd and Thorfinn had dueled many times already, but I actually don't think they did duel beyond the two instances when Thorfinn challenged Askeladd as a kid. The reason for this is how Thorfinn points out to Askeladd how many lives he's ended at this point in the story. I think Askeladd often promised him duels for his contributions, but never followed up on them, hence why our favorite seething blond pointed it out. Askeladd doesn't seem to want to fight Thorfinn, not because he's afraid of him, but because (as he explains to Bjorn regarding another character later on) he can see what Thorfinn will/needs to become. I do think there is, in Askeladd's mind, a debt to Thors that he wants to pay back by taking charge of Thorfinn. I won't call it "raising" because I don't think the man himself would call it that. You pointed out my absolute favorite factor about Askeladd: how difficult he is to read. I personally feel the man mostly lies when he speaks, but he does express sentiments he truly believes in on occasion, and I think you'll start recognizing when it happens. Anyway, that's my two cents on this episode (one of my favorites of season 1). Keep up the stellar work, Luke, and don't forget to enjoy the journey! 🎉🎉🎉

Luke, in some ways I agree with your logic on the fact that Thors so it's obvious that Thorfin would fail in a duel but there are a few other factors we should take into account here. Thors had one eye on the duel and the other going back and forth on the archers, the youngsters he was trying to protect and Leif. Thorfin has only the want to avenge his father and makes it obvious that all these guys on his ship can die and he wouldn't care. He has no restraints, nothing that can be used to blackmail him/hold him back and nothing to lose. One of my favorite lines in movie history came from the movie "The Replacements" ... "Listen up! This time tomorrow, the strike will be officially over. Now Dallas has made a big mistake out there tonight. They haven't been afraid of you, and they should be, because you have a powerful weapon working for you tonight: There is no tomorrow for you... and that makes you all VERY DANGEROUS PEOPLE!" - Coach Jimmy McGinty (played by Gene Hackman). t's always been one of my favorite movie quotes and it fits Thorfin's character perfectly. He has nothing holding him back now (unlike his father who had to protect Thorfin, the village Youngsters and Leif), after seeing the way he took down all those guards and their commander in a matter of seconds there's no doubt he's greatly improved, possibly to the point of winning this duel. Not saying he will, just saying that he's currently in the best position for this to happen considering the savage he's let them turn him into.

Fun fact: Askeladd, complex as he is, has his own personal rules. One of them is when he gives his word or when he swears an oath; if he only speaks on Olaf's name, it means he doesn't take him seriously or he lies. If he mentions Artorius, he is serious with his life on the line

Askeladd and Thorfinn have duelled plenty of times in the past at this point so even if Askeladd wins, Thorfinn can challenge him as many times as he want (assuming he achieves something worth duelling for)

@Krawbs8 ай бұрын

I was assuming that they hadn't dueled again yet. I'm sure Thorfinn issued challenges, but Thorfin says (7:09) "do you have any idea how many people I've killed? I went scouting, and I also brought up the rear. I've accomplished enough. but you..." to me, this says that Askeladd set this condition "come back and try again after you've accomplished something great on the battlefield" and that's what Thorfinn has been attempting to do all this time. but Askeladd hasn't acknowledged him yet. and Thorfinn keeps accusing him of "running away" because Askeladd has been using the vagueness of this condition as an excuse not to have to constantly fight Thorfinn. plus, it makes no sense that Thorfinn would go after a head with a helmet so rigorously, if he'd been dueling Askeladd all along. Thorfinn makes it clear, when Askeladd asks him to deliver that message at the beginning, that he isn't doing Askeladd favors just for shits and giggles. if Thorfinn could duel Askeladd any old time, this wouldn't be enough incentive.

@LaneGamesYT8 ай бұрын
As I'm sure you've already seen from some other comments but I'll reiterate here, in the manga the events of this episode are what we saw first. So it played out where we see this version of Thorfinn be a badass and fight through the French army on Askeladd's orders and bring him the head of the captain, find out that he did ALL OF THAT in exchange for a chance to KILL Askeladd to avenge his father, and promptly lose. So the readers had questions at this point- how did Thorfinn become like this? Who is Askeladd and why does Thorfinn want him dead so badly? Who is Thors and why did Askeladd kill him? Why doesn't Thorfinn just kill him in his sleep and insist on dueling? We then go back and see him as a kid, see Thors try to raise him with his own pacifist ideals, and see how Thorfinn became the tragic- and in some ways pathetic- person he would become at this point. We find out how he became this coldblooded killing machine that is bound by both a deep seated need for revenge and both hatred and a weird respect for Askeladd, while also still holding onto a warped sense of the honor that he still has for his father’s pride. I kinda wish it still worked the same way in the anime, as it gives the sense that Thorfinn is the main character, while this way makes it seem like Thors was until suddenly he wasn't (which can certainly work, as Ned Stark so sadly showed). This way has more of a sense of shock value, but can be more jarring. Not to mention that this episode in particular is weird when it comes to character design when its episode 7 instead of 1. That guy with the big head feels more out of place when the style of the show is more established than it would be if this had been episode 1. Anyway, it only gets better from here. Try to take notice of just how focused Thorfinn is on this mission. On getting his revenge. On getting strong enough and skilled enough to finally beat Askeladd. Take note of how that drive, that hatred, has robbed him of everything he could have had. His childhood, his innocence, his time, his wants and personality, all thrown away for the chance to kill. It's everything to him, and has been since he was that kid on the boat, rooting for his father. Just keep that in mind as you continue watching. Again, it only gets better from here.
