I think the conversation about love vs. discrimination is so important here. earlier, during episode 12, when the priest speaks of love, it feels like he's talking about agape, which is defined as "an empathetic, selfless love for others that includes a love for god, nature, strangers, and the less fortunate. it doesn't depend on familiarity, but instead has links to altruism, which is understood as an unselfish, genuine concern for the welfare of others." and basically, that kind of love is very hard for some people to imagine. not because they're uniquely evil or anything, but we do tend to think of ourselves first, and others second. what the priest lays out here is sort of like... a pathway from selfish love, to unselfish love. in the case of Ragnar, he would prioritize Canute and his well being over all else. he would let others die in order to ensure that Canute could live... he would kill another person himself if it meant protecting Canute. but it's not as though these people are less capable of feeling fear for themselves or grief for their loved ones. each and every one of them considered their own lives and families to be important. Ragnar simply couldn't consider these people as equals if he wanted to protect Canute... and so he hurt them, as if they mattered less. prioritizing like that is discrimination. and when you take that discrimination to its logical extreme, you get someone like Thorfinn. his father was killed... just one man. and for the sake of this one person who was so important to him, Thorfinn embarks on a years long quest, sowing violence and destruction, killing countless people, and becoming the villain in other people's tragedies... and he considers it all to be justified if he can kill the one guy that actually matters in his mind. prioritizing like that is discrimination. it puts the spotlight on how Thorfinn has always thought of his anger toward Askeladd as proof of the depth of his love for his father. but his father wouldn't have even wanted this. Thorfinn's pursuit of Askeladd isn't for Thors... Thors is dead, it's not like Thorfinn can protect anyone or build anything this way. no... Thorfinn has done all of this, the entire time, just to soothe his own frustration over the fact that Askeladd was able to get away with what he did. but what does that matter? like, truly, now that Thorfinn has killed so many people, and caused the exact same frustration that he's had to live with, for so many others... what changes if Askeladd dies? just as many people lay dead in the wake of what Thorfinn has joined Askeladd in doing, and all of them mattered to someone at least as much as Thors mattered to Thorfinn. agape encompasses the idea of empathizing with others, and understanding that they're capable of experiencing the exact same emotions as you, with just as much complexity as you. Thors understood this. when he defeated Askeladd's men without taking a single life, it's because he understood that each person in Askeladd's crew was just as alive as he was, and that mattered to him. Thors used to do a similar amount of killing to what these men do, and he was still able to one day realize that it was wrong. he couldn't treat those men as though they had any less potential to improve. this is a type of love that does not discriminate based on familiarity. when Thors said "you have no enemies" what he meant was that, with enough determination, you can step into any situation with the intent to do no harm. violence is a cycle unless you break it... sometimes it has to be you who stops it first. now that Thorfinn has killed this much, any one of his victims could step forward and demand his death with the same emotion that he's had toward Askeladd for the majority of his life. they'd have every right, and they'd have no incentive to understand all the extenuating circumstances that caused Thorfinn to turn out this way. we know how it happened, because we've been watching. but would a person that Thorfinn has harmed have any incentive to find out? to me, a true warrior is someone who knows that their goal should be peace. in truth, peace is the hardest goal you could pursue in a violent world. it's the toughest battle you could possibly pick, especially given what we've seen so far. but Thors had his eyes set toward his daughter's future when he left a life of war behind him, Askeladd once knew to dream of Avalon and the story of Artorius, Canute's goal is to create Utopia on earth, and Thorfinn can still recall the tale of Vinland. for every fight, there has to be a reason... a real, worthy goal that makes the struggle matter. there is nothing harder than protecting something fragile in a violent world, but if you can do it... that's what makes you a legend. you can't be a true warrior without that.

I think Cannon is right that nobody would find the priest’s definition of love compelling, but that’s kind of the point. Once Canute understands what the priest is telling him he becomes furious because he realizes the standard that “god” has set is forever out of reach. He looks at the senseless fighting and realizes they will never overcome their human nature and achieve “true love”. So he rejects god and his trials and hugs Bjorn. It’s actually a really beautiful scene

14:26 the reason why snow is love is because people can pick it up, people can use it, people can step on it and it will not complain. It does not care who or what affects it because it is indiscriminate in love. Anyone can pick up an apple and eat it. When a person dies, animals and plants can take the energy of the person and that person will never question it. A living person will deny helping people if they do not know them, hence why the priest liked Thors, Thors helped out the slave without knowing him; he is a true warrior, he wins duels without the need of a sword

@@edwinscsthats the point tho. That's why canut turned his back on god. So basically the priests perceives love as a divine thing. That gods way of loving isnt the same way humans love. So for that reason the world is like hell. Canut realised this and became furious and angry. How dare god put us on a trial and test with no possibility of achievement. People suffer and they always will since humans can never experience divine love. So begging and praying to god isn't going to help. So its time to step up and create a utopia himself. That's what canute is thinking. Word peace isn't achievable by believing in god

Discrimination vs unconditional love REALLY resonates with me. Why should I love my family more than others? If I was born under other circumstances, I would love other families. I would be like any person if I was dealt their hand and I would love any person if I was dealt the hand of those who love those people. So my discriminant "love" is just ignorance and bias. It's defined by my limited experiences, but not on the lovability of a person. Think about AoT and you can realize what horrors discriminant love is capable of. Unconditional love has much more power than discrimination to solve climate change, prevent nuclear war, and fix a lot of the mess the world is in. Imagine what could happen in the US if the two parties could feel unconditional love rather than trying to just push the agendas of their tribe. A true warrior fights for the wellbeing of everyone. "You have no enemies." - Thors

but for that, a person must be willing to let go and just be content with where they are, to revel in monotony, to seek beauty in the simple and the local, utterly impossible because the forces of progress will try to move to such an eden and transform it into something else.

But I think the point was only god knows true love. the human way of love isn't real love but discrimination. God put us on a trial and test to something we can never achieve. God is cruel in that sense. There's basically no point in life cause true peace and love can never be attained. I think that's why canut turned his back on god. Praying and begging isn't gonna make the world better. God chose to make the world like this and set humans on a endless trial. So its time to step up and create a utopia self. I think it’s also important to know that while Thors knew what a true warrior is, he himself is not one. At the end of the day, he still uses a sword in battle and this lifestyle ultimately get him killed. The point of a true warrior was to inspire the youth and especially Thorfinn, to know the difference.

The priest's perception of love on a human level is as fascinating as startling; you would never associate this feeling with "discrimination", and yet it does make sense. I think one can be the most genuine and loving person, there would still be some unintentional disparity, because that's how imperfect we are as humans. This end discussion was really enjoyable... This episode is one of the most important key episodes in the entire Vinland Saga story. Some of the most important themes of Vinland Saga are the words of Thorfinn's father. In other words, "What is a true warrior?" This will continue to be a very important keyword. Please don't forget. And the awakening of Prince Canute! 👑This time, he was finally able to become emotionally independent from the three his fathers . Independence from the Father, the Adoptive Father, and the Christian God.🥹 I also really like the philosophical conversation between the priest and Prince Canute. The “love” that humans talk about is a wonderful feeling, but at the same time it is discrimination. In other words, we put different prices on people, good or bad, depending on the relationship we have with them and how we feel about ourselves. In other words, even though we are supposed to be the same human beings, we make a difference in the weight of human lives.

A familiar acquaintant said eleven years, four months, and two days ago: "There are moments when one understands only in those moments." Enlightenment comes from accumulation, but it appears suddenly. Until enlightenment comes to an individual, they don't realize the extent of their accumulation, nor can they comprehend its meaning and significance. Perhaps they've heard from others that "everything is an experience, an accumulation" but they cannot grasp the true essence of these words. Indeed, it is not a statement that can be filled simply by reciting it by heart. The person might feel, "What good is such an experience if it doesn't serve any purpose? How can such an accumulation have any positive meaning, given the pain, death, and betrayal one experiences in life?" In such a moment, an individual's entire past and accumulations surface and become illuminated. Upon enlightenment, it becomes evident that all the paths that led the person to that point were crocheted together with a double-edged Afghan crochet hook-conscious or unconscious choices interwoven. In that moment, all the unknowns vanish, and everything gains meaning in the person's eyes. Even the seemingly insignificant choice of which chair to sit on on the first day of school twenty years ago reveals itself as a pivotal turning point that shaped their present self. If that person had chosen a different chair that day, they would be living an entirely different life as a completely different individual today. Now, let's come to the analogy that Knud experienced during the Middle Ages, where he mentioned that the fog lifted from his eyes, and he saw everything more clearly. It is indeed an apt analogy. While watching an uncertain and dangerous battle unfold before his eyes, he became attentive to the trees, rocks, soil, and the chirping of birds, indicating that all the filters in his mind were lifted. Instead of looking at a small square photograph, he began to see the scene he was part of. However, there is a vast difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. The prince believed he had everything he needed to take action, and he stood up. He thought he alone held the ultimate truth. To Knud, it seemed as though he had awakened to the reality of the world, while the rest of humanity remained asleep. He was driven by an enthusiasm that is beyond words; he was going to gain followers by proclaiming "I will give meaning to all of you.". But what happens if there's no enthusiasm to take action? "You have become wise. Yet, true wisdom is knowing that you have learned too late at that moment." - Umberto Eco, ll pendolo di Foucault (1988)

Ragnar only cares for the prince but snow doesn't. The nature treat everybosy equal. That is the different between love and discrimination. That the ideal of this ep. Canute then realizes the examples of love are all around but nobody notice it. So what if a person can love without discrimination ? Answers are what we see, (little spoiled)A guy can keep his dream to protect his mother homeland, the evil viking can enjoy raiding and fighting for themself. They still live and enjoy life cause that one person can love.

I enjoy the whole LOVE conversation that goes on in the episode. When I first heard what chanut said I had to sit there for a few minutes and think about it because its actually a very deep theological question. Ultimately no one can express TRUE LOVE because that would mean that you love everyone without discrimination. From my beliefs, Jesus was the only human to have lived to ever shown true love towards everyone. Because hes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit making him God who loves all he has created. Its interesting stuff.

I think Canute is a largely misunderstood character. And this scene in particular is misunderstood. Everything Canute said, and the whole love theme presented here, revolves around god. What Canute realized is that god does not love all of his creations. God lets the innocent get killed and these warrior to live in hell on earth. Through talking with the religious man he realized, god never loved him or the other warriors with him. He was discriminated against. And to create the world the Ragnar showed, a world of love, he has to start loving those that were discriminator against by god. That is why he spoke to god referring to Bjorn "This man's soul cannot be saved through the trials you set for him!" (what Bjorn needs is love not trials) and then said referring to all warriors "I shall give meaning to your battles, to your life and death.". That is his duty.

Duh what this is a misinterpetation as well. throughout the scene Canute never doubts or percieves God's love as discrimination. the very establishment of the concept of discriminate and indiscriminate love is possible only through the unconditional love exemplified by the christian god and christian philosophy of unconditional love here. What Canute is at angry at God for is God setting such a hugh standard for paradise, that standard being unconditional love. Canute feels that is impossible, and sets out to build his own paradise, rejecting God's paradise. end of scene.

The love the priest is talking about is "Agape". The loving of all things equally (paraphrasing). This is the love God has for every living being. So humans are incapable of "Agape". That's why the priest was so interested in the story of Thor's and how "a true warrior doesn't need a sword". Very Jesus like qualities. Something interesting here is that Canute's beliefs are destroyed by his revelation, and he now despises God, but the priests beliefs are strengthened by "witnessing a miracle" (Canute stopping Bjorn).

The reason for confusion on the definition of love here, is that it's coming from a different philosophical source. While it is coming from a Christian priest, the actual religion being portrayed here is Buddhism.

I think the priest's view is more like Buddhism and Animism. Because I have been told that only people who believe in Christianity (GOD and Jesus) can get the unconditional love from GOD. But pagans and heathens go to hell. This is what the Christian priests have been preaching in the world. These Vikings were pagans, so I think they were supposed to be abandoned by GOD (in Christianity).
